Zhou Mi is being banned by BWF for 2 years. Reason is that she was positive and failed doping tests. 2 years is alot. This means she will not be able to play. Might as well retire. All the best to her. I'm not sure how this will affect her sponsors.

Zhou Mi banned for two years

The BWF announced today that a BWF Doping Hearing conducted in Copenhagen on Monday 23 August has banned ZHOU Mi (HKG) for 2 years from participation in badminton, following an Adverse Analytical Finding.

The Hearing Panel decided “that a period of 2 years ineligibility is imposed upon ZHOU Mi for the first violation of the BWF Anti-dopingRegulations. The period of ineligibility commences from the date of the provisional suspension, 4 August 2010”.
The Hearing was the result of an Adverse Analytical Finding of a sample taken from ZHOU Mi in late June as part of the BWF’s ‘out-of-competition’ testing programme. ZHOU Mi tested positive to Clenbuterol, a Class 1 Anabolic Agent on the WADA Prohibited List of substances.

“BWF is fortunate that this is the first case that the BWF has ruled on for a number of years. The case sends a strong message to elite athletes in the sport who need to be aware of Prohibited Substances and the consequences of taking these – either deliberately or inadvertently,” said Thomas Lund, BWF COO.
Zhou Mi (HK) in the proceedings acknowledged that she had taken some common over-the-counter medication but was unaware whether or not it had contained any prohibited substance.

“The BWF together with WADA conduct both ‘out-of competition’ and ‘in-competition’ testing on a regular basis and athletes need to be aware that they are ultimately responsible for everything they ingest – whether it is taken deliberately or inadvertently” Lund added. “And this case shows that for a first offence, the punishment is severe”.
The sanction means that ZHOU Mi cannot participate in any badminton at the international, national and local level for a period of 2 years.

That is a big big news. I couldn't believe that. Poor ZM, I think we are going to say goodbye to her. :(

    Clenbuterol (From Wikipedia),
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clenbuterol

Clenbuterol (Spirovent, Ventipulmin) is a sympathomimetic amine used by sufferers of breathing disorders as a decongestant and bronchodilator. People with chronic breathing disorders such as asthma use this as a bronchodilator to make breathing easier. It is most commonly available as the hydrochloride salt clenbuterol hydrochloride.

Clenbuterol is approved for use in some countries (via prescription only) as a bronchodilator for asthma patients. Recently though, the drug has been publicized for its off-label use as a weight loss drug, similar to usage of other sympathomimetic amines such as Ephedrine. It is commonly used as a slimming aid despite lack of sufficient clinical evidence supporting such use.

It is also one of the banned drugs for IOC-tested athletes.

According to sources.. she had taken Chinese Drugs to lessen her fever. And the "banned" substance was in it and she is not aware of it. Too bad...

Oh well, her time was nearing the end anyway. This is just premature retirement. Good luck to her in her future life. :( She could have played more though. But I'm sure that she'll be a quality sparring partner for Yippy :) After all she is not banned from sparring.

Sorry to hear this. Wondering if she can still play for China super league?
Or she can help out Zho Jian Hwa to be a coach.

    WADA regulations are rather strict

    .
I don't think so. WADA regulations are rather strict. The regulations apply to all federations signed up the World Anti-Doping Code.

Zhou Mi will have to wait for another 2 years before she competes again. :(:(:(

Yup lor, sad for her to have to retire in this way :(.

A couple of years ago, Sairul Ayon appealed with Sample B, his Sample B was clear of drugs, he got the ban lifted. Sairul took some medicine for his cough/fever, the brand he bought had banned substance & he didnt filled a certain form to state he was taking meds - it was during competition. Dunno if ZM want to do the same

Two years after, she's way over the hill. It's really a death sentence for her career unless an appeal can take place real soon and the ban revoke immediately.

Just speaking in general, when ever athletes get caught for doping, they often say they took it inadvertently in the form of a medicine. I'm certainly not accusing ZM of anything suspicious but regardless of her innocent action, it kinda opens up a can of worms and doesn't help her reputation whatsoever. Once your name has been associated with a drug incident it's hard to hake it. (see Lance Armstrong & cyclists, MLB home run hitters)

I suppose this could be end of ZM's career given her age.

In the Doping Hearing Panel Decision it says:

"The athlete did not declare on the Doping Control Form that she had taken any medications or supplements in the 7 days prior to the test."

    Very suspicous!
