dont worry, Nikon will update its aging D300/300s with much better specs.
D7000 still lacks fps and focusing points against D300s. suspect D400 will be like F1 cars.

if you refer to dpreview site's info, is USD1200 for body only. which will be less than RM4k. yum yum....

D7000 at 6 fps vrs 7 fps for D300s, and at USD1200 D7000 body would cost less than D300s? and 1080p to 720p? Winner for D7000.

official; it is not D90's replacement. D7000 sits in between D300s and D90 which same level of Canon 60D. also, D7000 killed D60.

unofficial; it is D90's replacement. hard to judge, isnt it?

my guess is, Nikon want to vs Canon in the same level play. D3100 vs 550D, D7000 vs 60D, D400(coming soon) vs 7D. i wonder what if Nikon upgrade its D5000 to D5100....

That's my feeling. I just got myself a D90 and very satisfied with it

i bet you that though it is not a d90 replacement, it might as well be since they probably will be phasing out the d90... notice... d40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 and they cannot do d100 because there's a 100, 200, 300, 700 that's why got extra 0 for d5000, d3000, d7000... d5000 pretty much took out d40 and d60 even though it wasn't a replacement but it sat between d60 and d90. now d7000 sits between d90 and d300. so yeah... marketing marketing.

in term of marketing, Canon is the king in camera world. replacement every year and still many hype for it. at least Nikon comes out like every 2 years and some "real" improvements and much different from other models. from D90 to D7k, vast improvements. from 50D to 60D, going back track??

On paper, the D7000 does seem to stack up against (or even beat) the current D300s. However, if you're shooting sports, the D300s will be much faster. I had the D90 for a year and sold it and upgraded to the D700 and the AF speed (non AF-S lenses) is miles ahead. If you're planning to buy a camera for general use, both the D90 and the D7000 will be very good. Put it this way, if you get the D90, you can put the savings toward better glass.

D300s is selling at a very tempting price. just about USD100++ apart from D7k.
no doubt, D7k will be slower than D300s. D7k is not a replacement for D300s. for sports only requirement, fast AF and big buffer.

But for over 90% of users, the D7000 (or even the D90) is enough for their needs. Or better yet, something like a D3100 is excellent for what it does. Got my girlfriend one and she loves it.
