    Feedback on tournament?

The CEO of Badminton BC sent an email to all players in this particular tournament regarding an audit to be done.

I played Saturday in the 80+ and 100+ events but didn't really have any problems other than sometimes, it was a short rest between matches but heard that some waited hours in between matches.

The only thing that I had an issue with is the fact that you are allocated one feather shuttle per match so you can imagine how many shuttles of your own you had to shell out to finish the match.

Given that this a Badminton BC sanctioned event, you would think that more support would have been given to the organizers but I did noticed that there was roughly around 3 or 4 folks doing the event tables which given the number of events in the tournament, that is a huge gap in organizers/officials.

Apparently, the organizers preferred to run the tournament themselves, so BBC let them do their own thing. So either way, the tournament organizers overestimated their ability to run the tournament, as much as BBC overestimated that the tournament organizers were capable of running the tournament themselves.

From what I gather, this is an inaccurate statement. The last paragraph in post #6 is more accurate.

From what I gather BELOW, it was an accurate statement.

"Badminton BC didnt actually organise the tournament at all. We asked organisers if they prefer to run everything themselves so I put the power back into their park." - Arak Bhokanandh (BBC - VP Competitions). [Facebook]

The tournament could have been held anywhere, but the organization was the problem.

    Interesting...

Is Arak referring to the 2010 Richmond Open or in general in how BadmintonBC would approach any sanctioned event?

I heard that the tournament director asked for assistance from Badminton BC and response was "Yes, we will help".

He was referring to the Richmond Open as there was a long discussion by some players on Facebook. Perhaps the tournament director asked for assistance during the tournament, but from Arak's statement it appears that they did not think they needed assistance before the first night.

I could contact him and ask if you really want the info.

    To clarify a point:

Arak's statement is false. The organizers DID NOT prefer to run the tournament themselves. The organizers had no contact or dealings with Arak, so his statement of "putting the power back into their park" is inaccurate. The organizers did not decline Badminton BC help. It was believed all along that BBC would be along side with the organizers running the tournament.

Post #6 last paragraph is accurate: "Given that this a Badminton BC sanctioned event, you would think that more support would have been given to the organizers but I did noticed that there was roughly around 3 or 4 folks doing the event tables which given the number of events in the tournament, that is a huge gap in organizers/officials."

According to Arak, the tournament organizer declined help. Phil Weir of Badminton BC was the one who spoke with him and there may even be phone transcripts to verify. Since the tournament went way over budget, the tournament organizer was demanding that Badminton BC should cover the extra expenses, because he booked the facility from Richmond Pro per hour, and since there were massive delays, there were also massive charges for extra court time used. However Badminton BC is refusing to pay and will take the tournament organizer to court if necessary. Unfortunate, but that's what really happened.

    Audit was published. Some highlights:
    - As of October 27, 2010, there are still 32 players who have not paid their
    entry fees.

    - There was no referee [tournament] secured by the TOC [Tournament Organizing Committee] for this tournament.
    - The TOC requested assistance from BBC staff approximately 4 hours prior
to the start of the event.
    - There was only one umpire contacted and due to an alleged dispute on the
Friday night, the umpire left the venue and did not return for the rest of the
    tournament.

    The three conclusions reached were:
Three main points could have drastically improved the performance of this event:
    1. All fees paid prior to the start of the event ‐ this will provide players with the freedom to show up and enjoy playing without being
"chased" by organizers for unpaid entry fees.
    2. A tournament referee on‐site for the duration of the event ‐ this will provide the TOC with any technical support with regard to the
regulations and processes that should be followed during an event.
    3. Volunteer support ‐ a TOC should be aware of the tasks that need to occur to host a successful event and should schedule an appropriate
amount of support staff to accomplish all of these tasks.
