BBC News : http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-south-asia-11403204 Games should not have gone to Delhi, says Australia Australia's Olympic Committee president has said the Commonwealth Games should not have been awarded to Delhi. John Coates said the Commonwealth Games Federation lacked the resources to monitor progress and to ensure that construction deadlines were met. England have become the first overseas team to reach Delhi, but other nations have delayed their arrivals. A New Zealand cyclist became the first member of his nation's team to pull out because of health and safety fears. Greg Henderson, who has won four medals at previous Games, cancelled on Friday, citing concerns over the state of facilities - a day after four British cyclists withdrew from the 3-14 October competition. ....please click on the link to get the full story
But the athlete accommadation must have 3,000+ rooms, those pictures we see are 8 rooms at most (and more likely from the same one). What is scarier for me is the bridge that fell down...the bridge that will take people/cars into the stadium. It is easy for people to criticise now though, the Commonwealth board have a lot to answer as they appear to have not been monitoring them closely or enough or not doing anything about what they saw.
The corruption scandal, gun fire incident and this commonwealth disaster really put India's reputation in rock bottom. I have no idea how India is going to pull themselve together from this slum. Anyway, I hope they(athletes as well) can pull through the commonwealth game in one piece.
Well, if I remember, London faced a terrorist attack in the metro a few days after they got awarded the 2012 games...
One newspaper reported that a bed collapsed when an Indian boxer (he participates in 45kg category) sat on his bed for resting...
Sorry, my fault... it should be 54kg, not 45kg.... http://www.todayonline.com/Sports/EDC100927-0000043/Games-CEO-slams-India Games officials faced more embarrassment yesterday as an Indian boxer's bed collapsed when he sat on it after moving into his accommodation at the athletes' village. Akhil Kumar, who won gold for India in the 54-kg division at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, said that he was disappointed with his accommodations. "When I sat down on my bed to take a rest, it collapsed," Kumar was quoted as saying by the Times of India newspaper.
2010 XIX Commonwealth Games in Delhi: More concerns are about their safety fears . Yes, all our different Australian Sports National Associations are quite worried about what's reported not good at this coming 2010 XIX Commonwealth Games to be held in Delhi. More concerns are about their safety, rather than about the health fears. I have heard that the Indian Army is now put into full alert to keep a tight security to protect participants. Let's hope that everything will run smoothly at this 2010 XIX Commonwealth Games. .
..all the baddy players/teams should just sleep and shower in the badminton hall/venue. Probably one of the safest and cleanest venues in the CWG..
if all the buildings in such an environment as in the photos, that would be definitely more than a headache just for the people in 8 rooms.
are you joking ? they made kids work to build the CWG buildings ? I guess they surely wouldn't have been awarded the event if the Commitee knew that..
wow... I can't believe my eyes... thanks for sharing... hope the Lord will shower His grace so that CGW will have no more hiccups...
i saw that in a newspaper but i cant found it online the newspaper call:东方日报 chinese press hope someone found it and post here
Hard evidence of child labor at India Coomonwealth Games are on CNN.com http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/asiapcf/09/23/commonwealth.games.child.labor/index.html If you google or bing, there are tons of pictures, even little girls
This kid should be under 5, already working for the construction of the Commonwealth Games. From what I read, there are 2 kinds of child labors, one is organized by some people to use cheap Child labors to save cost. Those children worked together, managed by the company. The other is the family got contract, then the family worked as a whole, every members in the family, husband, wife and all the children work together for the project. That's just my observation, could be wrong.
