Why must the serve be served below waist level?

Hi! I was just wondering about this question, is there a rationale behind it?

By the way, is there anyone who wants to play in Serangoon Central?

Otherwise you could do a overhead serve like tennis.. I wouldn't want to be at the receiving end of that.

I was wondering more of like, why serving even slightly above the waist would be considered a foul? What happened at the Commonwealth games got me thinking about this.

because if you never call the foul they will just serve higher and higher above the waist until they can flick kill the shuttle on the serve.
