Let's post some news from http://usabadminton.org USA Badminton Team Wins Silver Medal in Team Competition at the 2010 Pan American Badminton Championships Cecil Bleiker October 21, 2010 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – At the end of two days of competition, the USA Badminton Team captured the silver medal in the team competition portion of the 2010 Pan American Badminton Championships in Curitiba, Brazil. Individual competition set to begin today. Team USA fell three matches to one to Team Canada in yesterday’s finals of the team competition Wednesday night. Sattawat Pongnairat led Team USA with his two games to one victory in men’s singles over Team Canada’s Stephan Wojcikiewicz (18-21, 21-13 and 21-18). The U.S. mixed doubles team of Iris Wang and Nicholas Jinadasa lost two games to none to Canada’s Toby Ng and Grace Gao (17-21 and 12-21). In the women’s singles match, American Cee Ketpura fell to Canadian Michele Li two games to none (15-21 and 17-21). Vincent Nguy and Sameera Gunatileka represented Team USA in men’s doubles, but fell to Canada’s Adrian Liu and Derrick Ng two games to none (18-21 and 14-21). Team semifinal action was contested Wednesday morning prior to the finals. Team USA defeated Team Peru three matches to one. Ketpura defeated Christina Aicardia two games to none (21-17 and 21-11) in women’s singles. Nguy and Gunatileka defeated Bruno Monterverde and Mario Cuba in men’s doubles by the score of two games to none (21-13 and 21-18). In women’s doubles Iris Wang teamed with her sister Rena Wang to defeat Peru’s Claudia Rivero and Christina Aicardia two games to one (21-12, 23-25 and 21-7). The only blemish was a men’s singles two games to none loss by Pongnairat to Rodrigo Pacheco in men’s singles (11-21 and 12-21). In pool play on Tuesday, October 19th, Team USA fell to Team Canada one match to four, but rebounded to defeat Team Chile five matches to none. In the pool play match versus Canada, the Wang sisters (Iris and Rena) captured the victory and the point for Team USA by defeating Charmaine Reid and Joycelyn Ko in women’s doubles, two games to one (23-25, 21-13 and 21-11). In mixed doubles Jinadasa and Iris Wang fell two games to none to Ng and Gao (12-21 and 14-21). In men’s singles, Pongairat fell to Wojckiewicz two games to one (21-17, 19-21 and 20-22). Ketpura lost two games to one to Li in women’s singles (12-21, 21-17 and 18-21). Nguy and Gunatileka fell in men’s doubles to Ng and Liu two games to one (14-21, 21-16 and 10-21). Team USA had a much better go of things in the second match of team pool play as they won all five matches against Chile. In mixed doubles, Ketpura and Pongairat defeated Macaya Salinas Camila and Araya Ortiz Christian two games to none (21-11 and 21-16). In men’s singles, Jinadasa defeated Trigo Alfaro Andres two games to none (21-10 and 21-14). Ketpura got her second victory of the match in women’s singles with an easy two games to none victory over Chou Hu Ting Ting (21-8 and 21-9). In men’s doubles, Nguy and Gunatileka easily won over Andres and Cristian, two games to none (21-6 and 21-7). The Wang sisters (Iris and Rena) rounded things out for Team USA with a two games to none victory over Villegas Norambuena Natalia and Camila (21-7 and 21-13). In the individual events: in MS, Stephen Wojcikiewicz defeated Sattawat(USA) again in 3 sets to make it to the final against Rodrigo Pacheco(PER) who defeated David Snider and Jinadasa. I am quite surprised Pang and Snider lost so early. in WS, Michelle Li(CAN) will face Ketpura(USA) for the 3rd time in these PAN AMs. Michelle defeated Rena Wang(USA) quite easily surprisingly and Ketpura defeated Jocelyn Ko and Phyllis Chan on her way the finals. in MD, Nguy/Gunatileka finally beat Liu/Ng after losing twice in the Team event. They go onto the finals to face the Brazilians. in WD, it's an all-Canadian final with Li/Bruce vs Ko/Gao. Li/Bruce should once again prevail. IN XD, it's also an all-Canadian final pitting Gao/Toby Ng vs Bruce/Kevin Li. Gao/Ng should win easily.
