BWF will select five of the 12 Super Series tournaments as "top events," raising both the prize money and points. Liu Fengyan, deputy director and secretary-general of the China Badminton Association, said yesterday that the reorganization will create tournaments similar to the Grand Slams in tennis and that these events will attract the top players. The five tournaments will be chosen during the 2010 China Open in Shanghai (November 30-December 5) and announced on the final day. The China Open has a strong chance of becoming one of the top five events next year. "As the model tournament of the Super Series, the China Open in Shanghai will probably be upgraded to a higher level event," Liu said confidently. "The tournament's prize money will nearly double." Meanwhile, about 300 players, including Denmark's Peter Hoeg Gade, as well as China's Lin Dan and Chen Jin have confirmed they will compete in the China Open at Yuanshen Sports Center in Pudong New Area. Ticket prices were lowered 20 percent this year in an effort to boost attendance, the organizer said. Tickets will cost from 30 yuan (US$4.5) to 680 yuan. Hmm. That link is broken. Perhaps the writer suddenly realized he/she was reading a quote from six months ago. It would have been pretty cheeky for Liu to 'predict' that the China Open would be chosen in a decision that was actually handed down in May.
No. The story is still there, though I had to find it here first before chris-ccc's link would work for me. Very Twilight Zone-ish, especially when the badminton archive page says that paper reported on the Premier Super Series in May already.

I don't understand this. Weren't the 5 events already decided in May during the Thomas Cup. It's common knowledge which ones they are and how much prize money they are offering. Sounds like CHN Open organizer is trying to drum up some publicity for the event. Those in the know (like all of BC) must be rolling their eyes.
That's my point, except that you'd have to include the paper's own readers among the eye-rollers, since this very paper included the same report in May. On the other hand, on Facebook, the BWF is now talking about a press conference in Shanghai on the topic of the Super Series, so perhaps there is method to the Shanghai Daily's madness.
