Hello, I was playing badminton at the club and notice one member wrapped his over grip over the factory transparent plastic wrap when you buy a racket new. I was gonna ask him the reason why but when I finished my game and I can't find him after. What is the main purpose wrapping over grip over the factory plastic wrap? Is there pro or con by doing so? Do you do wrap your handle that way too?
Maybe he forgot to take it off? Other reason is that he doesn't want to ruin the grip undernerth the plastic wrap.
I tear off the original grip for a much better replacement grip. My main rival uses a Panda Power Trinity 2 as his go-to racket. He keeps the plastic on it, and puts an overgrip over it for a few reasons: 1. It makes it the perfect size for his hands. 2. He will always know the EXACT spec it was in case he needs to reorder. 3. It protects the original grip for reason 4 4. If her ever has to sell the racket, he can claim that the plastic+original grip is still on 5. He's too lazy to take the plastic off In that order of importance.
is there any chance of the overgrip even slightly sliding or wiggling a little bit over the plastic wrap?
not in my experience, and hands sweat a TON so that would help maximize the chance of it sliding or wiggling. Not a full overlap (smooth grip), or 1/16 inch overlap (small ridges) slips. But as a warning, I am using Karakal Nano grips or Klippermate Klipper Overgrips
Did he use an adhesive overgrip or non-adhesive? If the former it's a handy way to prevent damage to the original grip when taking off the top grip.
Well, its the latter (almost). Klipper overgrips have a bit of adhesive at the tip to help start the wrapping, but thats all, no adhesive after that. I don't remember if the Karakal Nano ones have starting adhesive bits, but definitely not for the length of it.
I have some karakal nano 60's and yes they do have a small bit of adhesive for the starting grip. I don't notice any slippage when I tried wrapping over plastic (I use the entire overgrip over the plastic + orginal grip) but it looks kinda ugly with the plastic sticking out of near the cap end.
i suggest that to people who buy rackets sometimes at RA, in case they ever need warranty or returns or something...i know it's not always needed or anything, but hey, if the bigger grip doesn't bother you, why not? could come in handy...
I saw a lady with a new racket, playing with the plastic wrapper on it, without overgrip. She did not know she need to take it off. Most people put ovegrip over the plastic wrapper is because they believe it will prevent moisture ruining the original grip and wood handle.
Yep, like those people who want to keep their stuff in original condition, still have plastic wrap on their lampshades, sofas, TV remote controls, kitchen tables, etc !
