First, make sure that your lift or clear reached the back and went reasonably high. If you give them a short lift, the drop shot will be faster to the net.

Second, focus on the speed of your first movement: the split drop. A fast start is especially important when reaching a drop shot.

why is it that a short lift will lead to a faster drop shot?

Because the opponent is standing closer to the net when they play the shot.

because its easier for them :D

they only take a leap here and there plus some wrist work :D

and boy, oh boy if you continue to return like that there ain't fun playing!

however, tactic to counter these is different in singles and doubles.

if you are playing doubles try stand closer,

tell your partner to cover your back just in case :D

taking fast drop will be easier if you approach the net area earlier :)

    Very slow Smashes versus Dropshots

    .
Could it be that they were doing very slow Smashes, instead of the Dropshots?

The end result is the drop shot has less distance to travel across the net and potentially has a steeper angle. At the same time, you have less time to recover from the previous shot.

Because higher level players have excellent techniques in their swing. Their smash, clear and dropshot strokes look exactly the same until the very last instant so they're able to disguise their dropshots better and catch you wrong footed.
