Misbun quits as national singles coach
    By RAJES PAUL

KUALA LUMPUR: Coach Misbun Sidek literally started the New Year with a bang.

Yesterday, the former international dropped a bombshell on the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM). Out of the blue, Misbun tendered his resignation as the national singles coach.

And Misbun’s quit decision may probably trigger the walkout of several national players from BAM, including his blue-eyed world number one Lee Chong Wei.

Influential figure: Misbun Sidek’s quit decision may probably trigger the walkout of several national players from the BAM.
The move is considered untimely as Chong Wei and the other players are getting ready for three major tournaments this month – the Super Series Masters Finals in Taiwan (Jan 5-9), Malaysian Open (Jan 18-23) and Korean Open (Jan 25-29).

And there could be further ramifications, especially with Chong Wei being targeted to do well in this year’s World Championships and next year’s Olympic Games in London.

Kenny Goh, the BAM’s general manager, confirmed yesterday that Misbun had called it quits through a letter sent via e-mail to the BAM’s office on Dec 31.

Kenny, however, refused to divulge the reasons behind Misbun’s surprise exit.

“Misbun did not state any reasons but said that his resignation will take effect from Jan 3. Personally, I am surprised with the letter. I have informed president Datuk Seri Nadzmi (Mohd Salleh) and secretary Ng Chin Chai. I have also forwarded the e-mail to all the exco members,” said Kenny. “A meeting on this matter will take place after our president returns from overseas on Jan 4. It is still too early to comment on the reasons behind Misbun’s resignation. We are still in shock.”

It is no secret that the long-serving coach Misbun was unhappy since the BAM revamped their coaching and training structure five months ago.

In a bid to strengthen their structure, the BAM placed Misbun in the elite team under the charge of his younger brother Rashid. To add to his frustrations, two of his players - his son Misbun Ramdan and Wong Mew Choo – were removed from his care.

Ramdan was put under the charge of Hendrawan in the back-up squad while Mew Choo went to train under national women’s singles coach Wong Tat Meng.

Ramdan, however, has yet to report to Hendrawan for training . He has been training diligently under his father, much to the dismay of the BAM.

Misbun’s assistant coach Teh Seu Bock was also removed. But after some plea bargainings by Misbun and Chong Wei, Seu Bock returned to the elite squad.

In fact, Seu Bock will be accompanying Chong Wei to Taiwan for the Super Series Masters Finals today.

Misbun had also been under pressure following the below par performances of several back-up players - Liew Daren, Tan Chun Seang, Chan Kwong Beng and Chong Wei Feng. The matter was discussed at the coaching and training committee meeting (CNT) on Thursday.

Kenny, however, doubted that Misbun’s resignation was caused by the discussion at the CNT.

“It was like any other ordinary CNT meeting. We spoke in length on all the coaches’ reports. All the coaches were present except for Rexy Mainaky (doubles coach). It was a fruitful meeting,” said Kenny.

When asked whether Misbun’s quit decision would trigger a walkout by the players, Kenny said: “Misbun is a professional coach. He would have put much thought on his decision and putting national interest above all else. I doubt that this will take place.

“We cannot say that Misbun’s resignation will be a loss because we have not accepted his decision yet. Let Nadzmi and the exco look into it first.”

Under Misbun, Malaysia saw Mohd Hafiz Hashim winning the All-England in 2003 and Chong Wei nailing the 100th edition of the oldest badminton tournament last year. Chong Wei also won a silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Well, it is worrying that LCW might quit the national team, although I doubt so.

So, what is it now? New coach for LCW?

Whatever the reason why Datuk Misbun resigned, BAM must ultimately find a quick solution for the purpose of national interest. When Datuk Misbun do resign, he is definetly not happy about something, and whether BAM accept or not his resignation, unless there is a mutual solution for it, he will stand at his ground. It's BAM fault.

rashid should, but he will not :)

afterall, still in shock mood reading this on thestar. Predictable reason mayb because of:
    1) Ramdan allocation in the team
    2) LCW on CBL case

any1 knows about the story behind?

misbun quits because he isn't happy at all the way things are run in bam,

not just recently but quite sometime ago.

for everyone there is always a breaking point:D

    a hint for you all:

    'action speaks louder than words'

the saying is only true when their is results

but some people may disagree with the results

they want more and they think

'louder words have more action'

so i guess misbun is giving them a chance to see whether this many centuries old

    saying can be proven wrong:D

Totally agree with you. But Misbun turned out to be the one resigning. Personally, I felt that he did a very good job with Lee Chong Wei although he couldn't bring the rest up. At least he did a better job than Rashid, who totally failed.

Reason is up for us to speculate. We won't know the real reason if Misbun keeps mum.

To speculate, the reasons why Datuk Misbun resigned maybe:

    - BAM doesn't follow any of his advices
    - BAM doesn't give him more say and authority pertaining the training structure especially after the CNT meeting

When you are placed under the charge of some underperforming sibling, and have your son and protege taken away from your team..I guess that's the breaking point.

Assuming that Misbun does not change his mind, LCW can have his own personal coach if the BAM allows it. He can afford it just as TH has his own personal coach since he turned independent.
In tennis and golf, most players have their own personal coaches who are paid from the players' winnings and endorsements.
2011 will see huge increases in the prize monies of the 5 big SS tournaments and the CBL appearance fee is nothing to sniff at.

    Yes. It is not suprise.

I would be not suprise if after Misbun quit Mas National Singles Coach title, and turn to be DLCW's personal coach in a very short time.

    Misbun had no choice.

    Other than the reasons stated,
    - did Misbun's wife's health take a turn fo rthe worse?
    - did BAM drop Ramdan from the team since he defied orders by continuing to train under Misbun?

Yeah, Misbun resign as full time coach, he can coach part time- train LCW only.

BAM should find by all means the best and mutual way to make Datuk Misbun stay. If they don't and Datuk Misbun heart still remain what it is now and quits completely, then it's a sad day for Malaysia Badminton scenario. Why?

    - BAM maybe can find someone to replace him or Datuk LCW can find his own personal coach if he wants but i dare to say that someone won't have the zen and caliber as a coach like Datuk Misbun. You need to be a very good coach to continue where Li Mao starts and eventually able to mould him better now. Datuk LCW and Datuk Misbun are meant to be together as master and apprentice until Datuk LCW retire. Although Datuk LCW is also mature enough to do a self analysis of his own game by himself but in his quest to capture the 2 remaining missing title, World Champ and Olympic Gold, Datuk Misbun will still be his driving ticket to do that and without him, its going to be tough.

    - Datuk Misbun presence, input and advices are still very important as a motivational influence in the development of the future young players. Eventhough Hendrawan and Yap are currently in charge of the backups and juniors, for them to become mature world beater, then they stillneed Datuk Misbun.

right, for betterment of malaysian future in badminton,

bam should try to get him back.

if not, i see a loss for malaysian badminton starting today:eek:

dato' misbun is one of a kind,

his passion, love and knowledge for badminton is unspeakable.

he is very humble and likes helping players and even coaches.

he is not selfish and willing to impart his knowledge to those who seek for it.

but this are only known to those around him

cause he is always a damn busy person with his job as a coach.

not only does he trains chong wei, making him a world number one

but taking care of him and this has change him totally,

totally for what he is today.

beside training chong wei, he is also as concern as anyone for the next upcoming players,

upcoming players to take over the reign from chong wei

and mind you, chong wei himself has said many times to the younger ones to strive like him before

for he will not be able to maintain the world number one when age catches up.

what misbun has given to badminton only a few would understand.
