    Cool

    Announcement

Dear all, I will be test-playing a new nylon shuttlecock Yonex Mavis 2000 (usual shuttlecocks will still be used) during our game tomorrow 8 Oct 2011. This is in conjunction with my efforts to eliminate the use of feather shuttlecocks in future games (perhaps not so soon as I still have a few tubes of feather shuttlecocks). More information shall be provided at a later date. Thanks!

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Info from PETA (People's for the Ethical Treatment of Animals):

Most of the feathers that humans use come from chickens, turkeys, and geese who are raised for food. Most of these birds are kept in filthy, cramped cages or warehouses, where they are given barely enough room to move. For more information about the poultry industry, please see http://www.PETA.org/issues/Animals-Used-for-Food/poultry-and-eggs-industries-that-abuse-chickens.aspx.

Down feathers are usually plucked from live birds (http://www.PETA.org/b/thepetafiles/archive/2010/05/03/The-Really-LowDown.aspx). Multiple times in their lives, geese are held down by workers who tear out the softest feathers, or down, a process so painful that it’s outlawed in Western European countries. Just before slaughter, the geese are put into a machine that rips their longest feathers from their bodies, after which they are killed.

Ostriches and emus are both clipped and plucked for their feathers. Typically, they are immobilized—but not stunned—with painful electric shocks to their heads, after which their feathers are torn out of their bodies by hand; sometimes, they are “de-toed” so that they can’t defend themselves while being restrained. Then they are slaughtered.

For this reason, we encourage purchasing shuttlecocks and other items with faux feathers only. For our guide to compassionate clothing, please see http://www.PETA.org/living/fashion/cruelty-free-Clothing-guide.aspx. To learn more about feathers and down, please see our factsheet at http://www.PETA.org/issues/Animals-Used-for-Clothing/down-and-silk-birds-and-insects-exploited-for-fabric.aspx.

Thank you for caring and for everything that you do to help animals!

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

P.S. I love badminton, but I definitely dun love cruelty!

Didn't know that the geese got live pluck until i saw the video. Hopefully the down is not live pluck for some of the shuttlecock brands. Highly doubted that China farms is down pluck free.
The news channel removed the video and i found it on YT.

Thanks a lot, Junjie, for locating the video and putting it up here.

I guess it's not very possible for "no live-plucking" cuz if the feathers were removed only after the geese were dead, it would have been removed by throwing the carcasses into hot water tanks and the feathers' quality would not be good enough to be used in shuttlecocks.

I would certainly encourage "cruelty-free" shuttlecocks but if even they existed, those geese are kept in filthy, cramped cages or warehouses, where they are given barely enough room to move. One may think live-plucking is certainly more cruel, but how can it be less cruel when geese are forced to live under such conditions for months before they are virtually sent to their death? These feathers are most probably obtained from the foie gras industry too (http://www.peta.org/issues/animals-u...foie-gras.aspx)

Instead of hoping for our shuttlecocks to be cruelty-free, I'd be gradually introducing the use of nylon shuttlecocks such as Mavis 2000 into our game play. After some test playing today, I find that it is a relatively better nylon shuttlecock among others. In future games, I will be using it for around 20-25% of the total games, and the percentage of use will be gradually increased until all my feather shuttlecocks are used up (should last till early next year).

However, I understand that since nylon shuttlecocks are different from feather ones, some players who especially smash harder may not enjoy a game with a nylon shuttlecock. As such, if you totally cannot accept the use of nylon shuttlecocks, please dun make yourself unhappy by joining our session.

With this, I sincerely thank those who are willing to settle for the second best in the name of anti-cruelty to geese and also their support for my cause.
