Hi all, What do you recon will be the result of the world champions in each event, please write down for mens singles, womens singles, mixed, mens and women's doubles... For me..... MS = Hafiz Hashim or Chen Hong (If he gets his act together) WS = Gong Ruina or Camilla Martin MD = Ha and Kim or MAYBE Candra and Sigit WD = Gao Ling and Huang Sui MX = Kim and Ra or Eriksen and Schjoldager What about your opinions? Matt
Based on performance in Sudiman Cup MS = Lee Hyun Il or Taufik Hidayat WS = Zhou Mi MD = Ha and Kim WD = Gao Ling and Huang Sui MX = Kim and Ra
If Double's prediction comes true, it'll be the end of China badminton. Surely the siytation is not as bad as 1992/93,there are still some promising players in Chinese squad, like Bao Chun Lai or Zhou Mi.Maybe Chen Hong can try sth new, but everything points to Taufik's great talent and knowledge. I'm sure China will be able to secure 1 ot 2 wins.
No matter what anybody says, China's women's game is still superior to everybody else's. They have the highest chance of capturing both the WS and WD compared to any other nation and so there's already 2 highly possible titles. Also, Chinese MS is by no means weaker than any other nations as they have a full lineup this year. Just because Lee Hyun IL does well at 1 or 2 tournaments recently does not mean he's going to win everything from now on. How many titles has Wong Choon Han won after his China Open victory last year?? As a matter of fact, he lost out in round 1 of AE and round 3 of Swiss Open. In MS, Chen Hong is still China's "go-to" guy and still has the merit and creditials to be the world #1. He will continue to be China's #1 man for some time to come until Bao CL is ready to take the command. We all know what Bao is capable of and his victory at world juniors 2000 was just the first step. I hope Bao CL will do very well at WC.
CM is surely one of the best in history, for her consistent performance for almost the past decade. However, at the age of 30s, will CM still have one more bullet in her "old gun"? Single is not as the same as doubles. Stamina, strength and health count a lot. CM has battling with the Chinese squad for yrs (sure, after GZC, she had chances to beat everyone else), however, can she still manage to beat the chinese top 4 or 5 in a row as she used to do??? I really don't know. With team strategy still involved these days, chinese lady squard can easily bringing up some fresh legs against an over-working CM, if she can go that deep in an event.
i believe camilla is 29 as of last month. she has been quite fit despite her "old age". she will want to hold off her retirement for another year to go for Athens. quite a feat imho. however, she will still need to face a whole army of chinese+HK+dutch players. we will see how well she can hold out this time. Peter Gade has yet to win a big event. this year he fell to LeeHI in the Sudirman Cup, he lost pretty early on in both Olympics and previous two WC. he was pretty slow during WC. so my vote won't go to Peter. Candra Sigit was in real bad form during the SC. but they still have two more months to go. Koreans are looking real strong in MD. my vote for WD goes to China, Ra is holding the fort for Korea, but i think she is showing signs of age. China will likely try to wear her out again this time. my XD vote goes to Kim/Ra. no one in the world currently will get close to their form.
Didn't Peter Gade make it to the finals of last WC (2001)? I'm pretty sure he did and that's where he lost to Hendrawan.
Yes, Peter made it to the championship match at the 2001 WC and also the semifinals of the 2000 Olympics. But he has yet to consistently show any of the brilliance that he used to play with so I doubt he'll be hot favourite for the MS. Lee HI too seems a bit raw dispite recent good form. My pick for winners would be players from Indonesia and China as players from these countries seems to be able play their best for the big tournaments (looks and past WC and Olympics). In MS, look to see Taufik finally realize his potential or one of the young chineese lads to make it to tbe big league. LS seems to be a straight fight between China vs Camila... seems a big ask for Camila to go all the way but it'd be good if she at least reachs the finals (I hate finals involving players from the same country) MD = Ha and Kim LD = Gao and Huang XD = Kim and Ra of course these three event may depend on the fitness of Kim DM and Ra KM to make things intersting.
is it possible that China is using J Open as testing ground and history may repeat itself as when in 1987 and 1989, they lost all Gp tournaments but swept 5/5 and 4/5 in World Championships?
MS =Chen Hong WS = Gong Ruina MD =Candra and Sigit WD = Gao Ling and Huang Sui MX = Robertson and Emms
I'm in the m-30's right now, and I feel I'm much stronger, faster and smarter than when I was in the 20's. I remember watching a TV program talking about athletes. The host said usually the physical condition of human reaches the peak at low 30's. So I really don't understand why the badminton players are usually considered old when they are near 30.
Maybe when a player is over 30 he/she finds it difficult to recover or maintain fitness over 5 days of continuous playing .
I see ur point. However, numberous of serious injuries can well shorten professional athletes' career. For badminton, with all the "body twist" in games, it's very possible to get serious injuries especially at joints, such as wrist, elbow, shoulder, neck, waist, back, etc. For us, who normally play in club (or, maybe u r much better than this) lvl, the intense for the game is much less. I can play 3-5 hrs a day against regular club members, but if u ask me to play with a reginal champ (if he/she even cares to play with me), I am sure I will be helped out within 30 min. Don't even want to imagine if I have to face top elites every day. It's true, human phy. condition will be at the peak if he/she can stay healthy. However, I would rather believe pros will get more injuries than any normal ppl. Therefore, with numerous of operations, many elites have to retire in 20s. So, if a elite can play at very top lvl (CM) when getting around 30s, well, good skill + good work out + good luck.
Think that the favorites are, In this order (?), MS - Chen Hong / Taufik / Lee Hyung Ill / Peter Gade WS - Gong Ruina / Camilla Martin / Zhou Mi MD - Kim/Ha Candra/Sigit WD - Huang/Gao Ra/Lee MX - Kim/Ra Zhang/Gao Too bad I cannot be there to see the matches. Is anyone able to put recordings online?? Who of you will be there to watch the action? Here is the schedule: http://www.sportsworld-group.com/badminton/timetable.html Seems that the only player that is pretty certain of winning a title is our player of the year 2002...! Cheers, Mark.
a little amendment MS - Peter Gade WS - Xie Xing Fang MD - Candra/Sigit WD - Yang Wei/Zhang Jie Wen MX - Kim/Ra
what about Wong Choong Hann? I like his style of play, very agressive, no one mentioned him at all, how come? I think he will WIN!
