    I would assume that it means either long or short serve

    You won't get an answer here in this thread. ;););)

    Why? Because different pairs have their own codes. There is no international/standard code. Every pair can invent their own codes.

    The 2 fingers pointing down and the thumb and 4th finger together could mean;

    * I will be serving to their area No.2
    * I will cover our area No.2 after my service
    * I will be serving twice as fast (from normal speed)
    * I will be serving twice as slow (from normal speed)
    * You watch out for a Smash Return
    * You watch out for a Lift Return
    * etc, etc,......

    It's a (secret) code for his partner, not for us spectators to know.
    :):):)

    how often to ppl play with hand codes? i used to use it with my high school partner, but not anymore because as we got better when we step up to the service line we may notice some small changes in our opponents behaviour that may change our minds or we may feel more confident in doing another serve.

    so you think its better to have a hand signal or just react to your partner's serve?

    In Doubles, any communication with a partner is better than no communication. Therefore, it is good to inform your partner what Service you are planning to do. :):):)

    Talking about reacting to a partner's Service, this is also very important.

    Let's say I informed my partner that I will be serving low to the middle-T location; therefore informing my partner to get ready to Smash a Lift - Return of Service. But on seeing that the receiver was on the move (on shifting his/her weight) forward, I would change my Service. I would flick the shuttlecock over the receiver's head. I would expect my partner to move into a defensive side-by-side formation with me after my Service (no longer to have an attacking front-and-back formation as was originally planned).
