This year's SEA Games in Indonesia again unearthed a number of 'exotic' events some of which I've heard for the first time.

It depends on how you look at it. As a regional sports extravaganza the SEA Games tries to introduce some unusual domestic sports/games to showcase their existence and maybe to create more fun and excitement rather than the usual dominant Olympic-style events.

So I guess we should widen our outlook and embrace them as part of the SEA Games spirit.

Hockey omitted from list of sports for the 2011 SEA Games

    By S. RAMAGURU

KUALA LUMPUR: It is confirmed. Hockey will not be featured in the SEA Games in Indonesia in November.

But there is a possibility that the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) may hold the SEA Cup to make up for hockey’s exclusion from the regional Games.

The SEA Cup was first held in 2009 when hockey was not included in the Laos SEA Games. Bangkok hosted the SEA Cup and Malaysia, represented by the Project 2013 team, won the title after beating Singapore in the final.

The 26th SEA Games, which will be held in Jakarta and Palembang from Nov 11-25, will have 43 sports featuring 542 events.

There will be six new events, which the host country are allowed to select. They are bridge, paragliding, roller sports, shorinji kempo, vovinam and wall-climbing. These sports will have a total of 72 events.

Vovinam is a Vietnamese martial arts (with and without weapons) while shorinji kempo is another form of Japanese martial arts.

The Olympic Games sports included in the programme are archery (recurve and compound), aquatics (diving, swimming, synchronised swimming and water polo), athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, canoeing, cycling, equestrian, fencing, football (futsal), golf, gymnastics, judo, rowing, sailing, shooting, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, volleyball (beach and indoor), weightlifting and wrestling (freestyle and grego).

Sports from the Asian Games which have been included are baseball, billiards and snooker, bowling, karate, sepaktakraw, softball, soft tennis and wushu.

Six sports from the previous SEA Games retained are chess, fin swimming, pencak silat, petanque, traditional boat race and water ski.

Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) secretary general Datuk Sieh Kok Chi confirmed yesterday that the Indonesian organising committee decided on the 43 sports last week.

SEA Games Logo Launched, Indonesia is Ready

Indonesia’s readiness in hosting the 26th SEA Games was marked by launching the official logo of the event during a special ceremony kicking off the 300-day countdown to the Games at Tanah Airku theater in Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, Jakarta, on Jan. 15 organized by the Indonesia SEA Games Organizing Committee (Inasoc).

The logo, featuring mythical bird Garuda which also the national symbol of the country, represents strength, while its wings glory and splendor.

The upper green strokes describe the nation’s islands, forests, and mountainous terrain, while the blue strokes mean the vast Nusantara ocean which unifies differences. The red strokes represent eternal flame of courage, zeal, and passion to give the best for the country.

Beside the logo, the organizers also launched slogan “Indonesia Ready” to show that the country is ready to host the Games held in Palembang and Jakarta, Nov. 11-22.

The launching was attended by ambassadors of the participating countries of the Philippines, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Thailand. South Sumatra Governor Alex Noerdin and representative of Jakarta Provincial Government also attended the ceremony.

Indonesian top athletes and former athletes who bring pride to the country also took part in the ceremony, such as shuttler Taufik Hidayat, cyclist Santia Tri Kusuma, and swimmers Richard Sambera and Elsa Manora Nasution.

Rita Subowo, President of the Indonesia National Sports Committee (KONI) said the 26th SEA Games, which will be the fourth SEA Games hosted by Indonesia, will be a great momentum to bring back the country’s good old days where Indonesia topped the medal count and won the overall title.

“It is the right time to clinch the victory,” Rita said.

State Minister of Youth and Sports, Andi Alifian Mallarangeng said the launching shows that Indonesia is ready to host the event well.

“We hope that the ceremony would invite Indonesian people to welcome the event and become a good host,” Andi said.

Inasoc Chairman Rachmat Gobel said succeeding the Games is not only the obligation of government, KONI, or organizers.

“It is the nation’s duty, too. We need your support,” he said.

South Sumatra Governor Alex Noerdin said South Sumatra is ready to play 22 of 43 sports to compete during the Games, including football matches which will be split in Palembang and Jakarta.

Just like Palembang, Jakarta also announced its readiness to play the other sports. The capital city has been renovating existing venues and building the rests of venues scheduled to be finished before October.

Burung Garuda : Logo of 2011 Indonesia SEA Games

To host the SEA Games in 2011 has the meaning of hard work for Indonesia. Many things must be prepared to pick up the success Games of these Southeast Asian countries.

In addition to selecting beautiful date 11 November 2011 or 11/11/11 to set as the day of opening ceremonies, Indonesia SEA Games Organizing Committee (Inasoc) also prepared a variety of efforts for the SEA Games to be memorable especially for Indonesia and all participating countries. One of the impressions building efforts is done by specifying a logo that depicts Eagle with the philosophy of "Garuda Flight above Indonesia Nature”. As a symbol of the country, Garuda in the global sphere is well known and directly associated with Indonesia.

Garuda logo was officially introduced January 15, 2011 at the kick off event, 300 Days toward the SEA Games in Tanah Airku Theatre, Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, Jakarta. Physically, the Garuda symbolizes the power and its flaps wings represent the grandeur or glory.

In the logo, the head was given the red streaks symbolizing courage, fighting spirit, the spirit of play which also reflects the nationalism. The green streaks shaped mountain symbolizing Indonesia Nature Mountains and streaks of blue wave symbolizing the ocean archipelago.

The concept, is about the mighty Garuda as a guidance and as a protective figure, flying high above the Earth Mother which is rich in natural resources of forest, mountain, and maritime.

This spirit seems able to inspire athletes of Indonesia, from Sabang to Merauke. Proud of their own country and compete in sportsmanship with friendly countries.

Eleven small orange circles that resembles the petals form of a large circle is a representation of the 11 participating countries.

Indonesia Aims to Succeed at the 26 th SEA Games

Indonesia has every reason to succeed at the 26 th edition of the Southeast Asian Games slated Nov, 11-25. Hosting the Games in 1997, Indonesia came away with the outstanding achievement of winning 194 gold medals, 101 silvers and 115 bronzes. That was the last time Indonesia topped the medal standings before showing a continuously disappointing performance, at least until 2007.

Having improved its ranking from fifth place in the 2005 Games in Manila to third in the 2009 Games , Indonesia hopes to bring back its old time glory in the upcoming event to be held in Palembang and Jakarta. “The SEA Games will be a milestone of the awakening of our sports. Let’s work together to win back what we used to have, the overall champion title,” said Rita Subowo, Chairwoman of the Indonesia SEA Games Organizing Committee (Inasoc).

Indonesia's road to redemption was started with selecting the events that Indonesia feels they are competitive.

For that, the Indonesia SEA Games Organizing Committee (Inasoc) will propose a list of 536 events in 43 sports for approval to the other ten participating countries during a two-day SEA Games Council Meeting in Bali, Feb.25-26.

If approved, the Games is believed to be the biggest ever since 1997, when 490 events were held in Jakarta.

Palembang, the main hub, and Jakarta will each host 22 sports, with men’s football matches to be split between both cities. Indonesia must win more than 30 percents or roughly 160 gold medals to ensure a first place finish .

The Games is also hoped to help boost both cities economy through trade and tourism.

Sports to be played in Jakarta : archery, badminton, basketball, bowling, canoeing, cycling, dragon boat, equestrian, golf, fencing, judo, football, futsal, karate, kempo, paragliding, pencak silat, sailing, table tennis, taekwondo, vovinam, wushu.

Sports to be played in Palembang : athletics, aquatic (diving, swimming, synchronized swimming, water polo), baseball, boxing, bridge, fin swimming, football, gymnastic (artistic, ritmic, aerobic), petanque, roller skate, sepaktakraw, softball, shooting, volleyball (indoor and beach), wall climbing, water ski.

Smoke Free during Indonesia 26th SEA Games 2011

Government of South Sumatra early campaigned for the resurrection of sport without the smoke and the tobacco industry sponsors. XXVI SEA Games which will be held in November was declared non-smoking.

Confirmed in every corner of the city, including venues for the SEA Games in Palembang, will be listed warning, “no smoking allowed”. This is the commitment of the Government of South Sumatra Province and the Government of the Pelembang City to create clean air for the biggest sports event in Southeast Asia.

Actually, no smoking area policy has been rolled out by Palembang City Government through the Regional Regulation No7 in 2009 on Regions without Cigarettes. Local Policy has been effective since May 2010 by placing certain areas as smoke free public places such as workplaces, places of worship, arena, children's activities, public transport, the area of teaching and learning process and the health service.

The birth of the region without a cigarette regulations in Palembang, one was depart from the findings of John Hopkins Bloomberg said, almost all buildings that have no restrictions on smoking were tainted PM (unit smoke) 2.5 consisting of nicotine, TAR, and carbon dioxide. John's research also revealed cigarette smoke is potentially harmful to health, especially in children.

Apparently the anti-smoking programs have been adopted for a number of countries in the world who often hold an international sporting event. Policies which resist harsh smell of cigarette smoke have also been carried out during the event the SEA Games in Laos three years ago.

Even the Minister of Youth and Sports Andi Alfian Mallarangeng said would create firm rules about the anti-cigarette and the smoke held during sporting events.

"Even including strictly prohibits tobacco companies sponsoring sporting activities especially multi event like Olympic, Asian Games and SEA Games. We will make the rules, "Andi said some time ago in Jakarta.

So far, Indonesia and Cambodia are the two ASEAN countries are still free tobacco sponsorship at sports events, music concerts to street party. Data of the National Commission for Child Protection revealed that during 2007 in Indonesia there are 870 sports events sponsored by tobacco companies.

And badminton will be played (as usual) at Istora GBK Senayan Jakarta.
A hard task for INA to manage top position at medal standing after the last one in 1997 when INA hosted this biennial multi-sport event. Thailand should be the biggest threat.

Oh what a shame! Hope something can be done.

And many thanks to miksss for updating us on the SEA Games with some colourful photos. I must try to make a date with SEA Games Jakarta. :)

But Musi River brought back some sad memories as I recall a Singapore plane plunged into it with all its passengers some years ago.

Awkward. Logo represent bird (Garuda?), while mascot is komodo dragon. It's ok, but kinda weird.

Big events put Sumatra back on the tourism map

    SUMATRA

[IMG] Typical Malay house from Sumatra

By Luc Citrinot, eTN | May 03, 2011

JAKARTA/PALEMBANG (eTN) - Despite its proximity to India, as well as neighboring the western part of Southeast Asia (Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore), Sumatra failed until now to fully capitalize on its geographical location. Indonesia's second largest island attracted 1.72 million travelers (only direct arrivals at main ports of entry are recorded), a market share of less than 25% of total arrivals. By comparison, Bali alone represents 36.5% of all arrivals while Java attracted 31.5% of all travelers to Indonesia.

Until recently, little promotion was done on international markets to promote Sumatra - except for Batam and Bintan, two islands across Singapore - while limited international flights were on offer. But this is changing. There are now many flights linking Singapore to Kuala Lumpur and also Bangkok to Sumatra. And many events also now take place to promote Sumatra island.

There is a Visit Year Bandah Aceh 2011 in the northern province of Aceh. Long considered as a sanctuary for radical Islam, Aceh recently embraced tourism business. The tsunami catastrophe in 2004, which killed over 100,000 people in the province and caused devastation in many cities and villages changed indeed tourism perception. It is now perceived as a way to help lift people out of poverty. Along with the event, an investment fair will be hosted from July 1 to 5 to promote tourism, as well as agriculture and other potential investments.

But the biggest event in Sumatra in 2011 will be the South East Asian Games (SEA Games), which will be hosted in Palembang in South Sumatra. The event is of crucial importance for Indonesia as it took over the rotating chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) last January. The SEA Games will welcome 6,000 athletes from the ten ASEAN nations, as well as Timor Leste. The event will be held during 11 days from November 11, 2011 to November 22, 2011.

As the main host, Palembang has seen the development of new venues including the Jakabaring Sports Complex around the existing stadium, which covers an area of 45,000 square meters and also at the Gelora Sriwijaya Palembang Sports Center. All the venues and infrastructures necessary to the games will be completed over the summer and will be ready to welcome athletes on time, promised South Sumatra Governor H. Alex Nurdin. “South Sumatra will use the SEA Games as a starting point for promoting the province to the world,” the Governor said recently in a local press conference.

Infrastructures for the SEA Games comprise also a full-scale athletes-village –the first of its kind in Indonesia-, the expansion of the airport by 12% to reach an ultimate capacity of three million passengers as well as the completion of a new 147-room 4-star hotel integrating a convention centre.

Another spectacular event to take place is Musi Triboatlon, which will see international teams competing in an endurance race on three different kinds of boats - River Boat, Kaya, and Traditional Boat Racing or TBR. The race is due to take place prior to the SEA Games and is supported by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and will stretch on 500 kilometers from upstream to downstream along the Musi River, which runs through South Sumatra province. This international contest is being held for the first time. Musi Triboatlon will be followed by 15 teams from 12 countries coming from the ASEAN and also from Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Nepal. Each team must be able to master each type of boat.

"As it is a first for us, we imposed a quota limit of 15 teams, as we also have to provide guarantees for the safety of foreign participants," said Effendi Soen, working at the executive committee event in Jakarta. According to Sapta Nirwandar, Director General of Marketing SEA Games and Musi Triboatlon, the events are expected to generate renewed interest from international travelers for South Sumatra.

Other good news is also the hosting of Indonesia’s largest B2B travel show, TIME PASAR WISATA in Bandar Lampung in Southern Sumatra. The event attracts between 120 and 150 buyers from all around the world and 250 Indonesian exhibitors. Pasar Wisata will take place at the Novotel Bandar Lampung from October 13-16, 2011. Opened 2 years ago, Novotel Lampung is located in the heart of the regional capital, offering 223 rooms.
