Since badminton was first played at the Olympics in 1992, only Indonesia which can obtained gold medal from each edition.

    1992 Barcelona Olympic
Gold Medalist = Alan Budikusuma,Susi Susanti
    Silver Medalist = Ardy Wiranata,Rudy Gunawan/Edy Hartanto
    Bronze Medalist = Hermawan Susanto

    1996 Atlanta Olympic
Gold Medalist = Rexy Mainaky/Ricky Subagja.
    Silver Medalist = Mia Audina.
    Bronze Medalist = Susi Susanti,Anthonius Ariantho/Denny Kantono

    2000 Sydney Olympic
Gold Medalist = Tony Gunawan/Chandra Wijaya
    Silver Medalist = Hendrawan,Trikus Harjanto/Minarti Timur

    2004 Athens Olympic

    2008 Beijing Olympic
Gold Medalist = Markis Kido/Hendra Setiawan

Can Indonesia maintain the gold medal tradition in the upcoming 2012 London Olympic? If yes,who has the best chance?

We Hope so, but seem it will be very difficult.. since The Players don't perform well in these years.
I hope there is Rising star to come before OG 2012..

It's hard to predict, we do hope badminton gold in OG arena will be continued...maybe through MD, XD but it's obviously zero chance to grab gold through WS & WD.

Nothing last forever and all good things (16 yrs of domination) must come to an end. Even the great Brazil football team did not always win the world cup. London OG will be the time when INA is back to earth, and came home empty handed (not only in badminton but other events too). On the positive note, it will spark the next generation to fill the big shoes and they will do even better (hopefully).

    I hope Im wrong

hopefully, from WS department can retain the bronze medal.. good achievement already la :)

err..i think the composition of ina squad who will compete in London Olympic next year, will be defferent about 75% from the squad that competed in Beijing last 3 years. :) At least we will see many new generations for the upcoming London Olympic and it is a big difference squad from Beijing Olympic :) But kido/hendra and lilyana will included in the squad for sure ;)

I put Indonesia chance to win gold as only 10% in 2012. Kidho/Hendra is still the best bet. None of the younger players have better chances. The only other chance is Mix doubles if they can somehow produce a good combination.

I think no gold in 2012 will be the lowest point. The younger generation has better exposure to training and international competition.

2016 is still too long to predict but I would say that the chances to win gold is higher than 10%.

Possible players for the London Olympics
MS - Taufik Hidayat (2004, 2008), Simon Santoso
WS - either Adriyanti Firdasari or Maria Febe Kusumastuti
    MD - Markis Kido/Hendra Setiawan (2008), Bona Septano/Mohd Ahsan
    WD - Meiliana Jauhari/Greysia Polii
XD - Tantowi Ahmad/Liliyana Natsir (Butet played in 2008), either Fran Kurniawan Teng/Pia Zebadiah Bernadet or Mohd Rijal/Debby Susanto

Out of the possible 13 players, only 4 players have tasted the previous Olympics.

At the moment Tontowi Ahmad/Lilyana Natsir is the best hope for INA to keep the tradition alive. :)

If Gade plays next yr, he should be tied with Taufik and i believe both of them will hold the record (in singles and/or doubles events) should both play next yr..And Taufik will be the 1st INA player (in singles and/or doubles events) to play in 4 different Olympics, should he play next yr..

For current form I think Tontowi Ahmad/Lilyana Natsir will have a good chance.

But you will never know coz we can only guess when it comes closer. Forms of the day will decide. ;)

Imagine if PG and TH combines in doubles? Maybe they will take turns to play their doubles opponent. lol. ;)

    No for wild cards

RI nixes wild cards for London Games
Niken Prathivi, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Thu, 09/15/2011 8:00 AM

Indonesia will neither request nor accept wild card berths for the London Olympics, and will rely on hard work to win gold in 2012, according to an official.

Indonesian athletes should work hard to earn a berth in London and leave the wild cards to athletes from disadvantaged nations, Indonesian Olympics Council (KOI) secretary-general Timbul Thomas Lubis said.

“We won’t use the wild card heat for the Olympics. Even if we get an offer, it is about time to say no,” Timbul told The Jakarta Post in Jakarta on Tuesday.

The International Olympics Council, the National Olympics Council and local organizers usually give wild card berths to athletes from developing nations to encourage competition. In other Olympic sports, such as judo, archery and badminton, wild cards are frequently given by sport federations.

“It is no longer appropriate for us to get a wild card,” Timbul said, adding that other countries, such as Timor Leste, were more derserving.

INA's gold medal hopes hinge obviously on Markis/Hendra (MD) and Butet/Towi (XD). Bona/Ahsan could possibly join the party depending on their progress over the next 9 months. I think most would agree these are the only medal contenders (let alone gold medal).

Sorry to say, MS, WS and WD look extremely bleak.

Haha, you are extremely optimistic for the INA WS players... good for you. :)

Now, the reality. Choose from: WYH, WX, WSX, WL, JYJ, LX, LXR, CSC, Schenk, Tine, Rat, TTY, Saina. I think that pretty much closes the book on an INA medal.
