I know this forum discourages use of non-English on threads, but since we all watch so many videos with chinese commentary, I thought it would be useful to learn the Chinese words for e.g. smash or drop shot. Simply put, I would love to know more of what the chinese commentators are saying, and whether they add more insight than e.g. Gillian Clark I know there are plenty on this board who speak Mandarin fluently/ are native Mandarin speakers, so would much appreciate it if you could share your wisdom for us aspiring Mandarin speakers!! Just pinyin would be fine, but pinyin together with chinese characters is welcomed as well! I'll get us started: "Xia qiu" - Smash "Diao qiu" - Drop shot What's the term for "net shot" or "drive"??
As I learned: "wǎng qián qiu" for net shot "píng qiu" for drive, but usually coaches/players will refer to "píng chōu dǎng" (not sure about the pinyin) for flat shots It's not always easy to find the corresponding designations from Chinese (badminton) technical terms in English. If we look into the footwork, it has 6 or 7 different designations/types which you may not find in English.
thank you! i was curious to know what the word for drive was, and "ping qiu/ flat shuttle" certainly makes sense!
I think the fundamental difference between China and British commentators is that the latter tend to praise players more..... with admiration. Not that China commentators don't praise players, but they do it either in a concise manner like: "good shot!", or complete imply there is no challenge for the player with upperhand, like: "there is a big gap level here." Take it over, next floor!
Hi Everyone, I currently live in Beijing and have just joined two badminton clubs here. Although I haven't played in a while, after a few games most of the rust had gone. However, I did realise that my Chinese badminton vocabulary was non-existent. Therefore I have put together this list that may be helpful to others. I haven't included the tones for the pinyin. What a great effort! That backtramlines seems a bit of a mouthful. Couple of missing terms: spinning/tumbling netshot, slice shot. Also your translation for smash, sometimes I hear xia qiu rather than kou qiu. What isthe difference?
Wow, that's a fabulous amount of work. Thank you! (Now we just need a philanthropic soul to do an audio version and then we who are linguistically challenged, might have a hope of using some of these words)
Xia Qiu or Sha Qiu? Xia Qiu translates to Down-ball Sha Qiu translates to Kill-ball Wang Sha = Net Kill
Hey Cheung, Yeah, the back tramlines are basically something like "the zone between the back singles line and the doubles service line" or something similar .. I guess there is a better phrase but haven't found it yet. Slice shot: 切球 slice shot (literally "cut ball"). The net shot “夹发针”球 “jiafazhen”qiu literally means "hairpin" ball, so you can imagine the shape of such a shot. You could also say 落网球 luowangqiu .... I'll see if I can find out any more. As for xiaqiu or kouqiu, as far as I know they are used interchangeably .. "down ball" and "smash ball" respectively. The difference between the two could also be about speed ... I'll ask around. Can also add: kill shot 扣杀球 koushaqiu Cheers
