Recently, I noticed that my big toe nail is starting to fall off (on my racket foot)...
I've been bandaging it so it doesn't shift around when I move around, but I know it's going to fall off sooner or later.

Will I still be able to play when it comes off?? @_@ I have a tournament in a month, so I want to avert the pain until afterwards, if I can.

Should I get another pair of badminton shoes as well? I have an extra pair, but it's a lot tighter on my feet. ):

let it come off naturally. when that happens, a new toe nail would've already grown underneath.

why did it become loose in the first place?
injury? overly long toenail? tight shoes?

you have to avoid that to prevent it from happening in the future, because that is not normal and should not happen

meanwhile, cut off any loose part that sticks out to prevent it from catching and coming off prematurely and bandaid it up

if it's really loose, then might as well wiggle it off completely

it is very common for badminton players. we are supposed to land on the heels but not always possible.

we ended up landing on the balls of the feet and the toes takes the force of stopping the motion. as a result, the racket side toe gets bruised up under the nail. the nail then dies and falls off. but a new one always grows underneath before that happens.

the human body is quite incredible in that way.

too bad that isn't the case for limbs.

For my thumb it was because I got slashed while playing hockey without proper hockey gloves on, caught me right on the left thumb. It was pretty gross but because I was so young I thought it was also pretty cool at the time (that was after all the pain was gone :)

I guess it's worse for people who wears tighter fitting shoes?

How should a shoe be fitted then? cause my big toe hits the tip of the shoes once in a while. Not exactly to a point where it hurts but its uncomfortable

Thank you for all the advice!
Just wondering, in the event that it does fall off before another one grows back, will it hurt when I play? ):

I have that black toe few times now. It's caused by side twist movement in the toe box. Most time it happens when you try to hit bird behind you and rush back to center position.
I found narrow and tight fit shoe will help prevent that. Narrow shoe will not have room to turn on your toe.

I had something similar several times, but it was due to my shoe size. Obviously, it was too small, and squished my nails. Make sure you get new shoes and never wear shoes that are not 100% comfortable.

I've lost a few toenails on my racquet foot, a number of times. Yes it has to due with jamming your toenail into the end of your shoe (toenail too long, improperly fitting shoes etc.) If your nail gets ripped off immediately, yes it stings and hurts like a #$%#!!!! It will be better in a day or so. Most of the time though, the nail just lifts and eventually falls off when the new nail grows in. It's kinda tricky to manage and maintain the broken nail while the other is growing in. Keep the broken one trimmed and remove any edge that could get caught on your sock or shoe. (I use first aid tape to "attach" it to the new nail. I'll have to post pictures to explain.

The key to preventing this type of injury is simple. Use proper footwork techniques (heel-toe). Wear properly fitting shoes. AND MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL........TIE UP YOUR SHOES PROPERLY!!! There is a technique to tying/lacing your shoes, to ensure you don't slip forward in your shoes. You'll also get better ankle support. Again, I'll post pictures soon.

I'm curious to know how you tie it... is it normal fit at toes but tighter fit at ankle?

Reviving this old thread as it's a problem I've always had in my adult years of playing badminton.

I must have lost 4 big toenails in my time and it is very annoying. It happens when I have to sprint and stop hard such as lunging to retrieve a drop at the net coming from the rear court as my partner couldn't get to it. It goes black and eventually falls off. Sometimes it just goes black but doesn't fall off.

I've gotten used to trimming and filing my big toenail as far back as possible but it only seems to help slightly. My big toe still seems to push into the front of the shoe.

I'm just wondering if anyone has come up with a solution or ways to help with this problem?
