Usually a 10m length leaves spare but with the pre-weaving I'm trying right now looks a bit just (Until we get some real advice on the tech, that is..........)

depends on your tension. if u string really high tension u'll use less but 10m/30ft is safe bet for all tensions

for main, 7 x the length of the racket + 1x handle. for cross, 6 x the length of the racket.
if you want to save more string, and do the racket at higher tension, like 28+ lbs, you can use 7x and 5.9x the length of the racket.

At low tensions (21lbs ish) I use 4.9m mains and 4.5m crosses and there's plenty of reach to the tensioner.

I use about 9.0m in total... Approx 5.0m main and 4.0m for crosses.
I always cut 5.5m for the mains and 4.5m for the crosses and snip and throw the excess away.Last edited by Alom; 08-25-2009 at 01:50 PM.

My machine is a drop weight from Silent Partner HIP HOP, it seems like I always need 8 x length + 1 handle for the mains otherwise the string will not reach the gripper, even if it does I will not have enough string to go around the gripper drum. Is that normal for a rotational gripper? or am I doing something wrong.

you can use a starting clamp or even flying clamp with extra piece of string to extend the short string you have on the racket. this way, you can pull it with your machine and finish the job.
overall, I use about 13.0 x racket's length for 4-knot YY pattern, and about 12.1-12.3x racket's length for 2-knot (either Haribito (Gosen) or YY or Victor) stringing method.

that's pretty close.
when i get 10m pack, i divide the length of the string in two, give one side approx 1 to 1.5 feet longer, and then cut, which ends up around 5.5m + 4.5m.
if i get from a reel, then i do 3 arm spans, and then double it to get to around 10m. and then i follow the procedure above.
i never use a ruler.

With more experience now I can say that I can safely use 9.0m for a racket but then there has to b a strict protocol and on a 2 knot basis only. In this case in a 100m reel we get 11 rackets instead of 10. Every week we clean out the spent string and I am really saddened
at the amount we throw away, but there is nothing we can do about that.

1) Depend on the racquet. the racquet with new string pattern like AT900 or NS8000, they are 1 cross shorter then the old YY pattern.
2) Depend on the machine and where the tension head is. For badminton only machine, you can get a way as short as 8.6m while for tennis machine with crank, you need 9.1m without using extension. For most of tennis drop weight, I would say 9m or 9.1m will be fine.
3) Also tension can be a factor when it is 22lb vs 26lb.
4) After a few string job on your machine, you will figure out the best way to cut string length.

For me, at 6', 5-and-a-half arm spans
- 3 for mains, 2.5 for crosses. I reckon this is about 9.25-9.5 meters
