    Thanks Sealman.

So the following are the more relevant details:

    INTER-CONSTITUENCY BADMINTON TOURNAMENT 2011

    * The People’s Association (PA) and the Constituency Sports Club Council are the organisers for ICBT 2011.

    * The tournament shall commence on 9 April 2011 till 4 June 2011.

    * The tournament shall be held at Tampines Sports Hall and any other venues as decided by the organisers.

    * The final shall be held at Bukit Gombak Sports Hall or other venues as decided by the organisers.

    * The tournament shall consist of five matches and the order of play shall be as follows:

    (a) Active Ager/Veteran Men’s Doubles; (Now the emphasis on Active Ageing)
    (b) Women’s Singles;
    (c) Mixed Doubles;
    (d) Men’s Singles; and
    (e) Men’s Doubles.

    Tournament System

8.1 The top eight teams from last year’s tournament will be seeded into eight groups. The other registered teams will be drawn at random into the same eight groups.

8.2 The first round will be played on a Group Double Knockout System.

8.3 The winning teams from both winners’ and losers’ brackets in the first round would be placed in the second round fixtures by balloting, in accordance to the balloting format for Inter-Constituency Games (ICG) 2011.

8.4 The second round will be played on a Group Single Knockout System. The best four teams from the second round will proceed to the final round.

8.5 The final round will be played on a Single Knockout System.

8.6 In the event that less than 25 Constituency Sports Clubs (CSCs) registered for this tournament, the tournament will be cancelled.

(Quite a complicated and long process.) :D
But I think this year would be more competitive and interesting!

63 Teams competing in 8 groups

A badminton enthusiast to Singapore might be surprised to see so many constituency teams participating in what is now known as The Community Games.

This year's badminton competition is held at the Tampines Sports Hall, which has the most number of public courts at 19.

    http://www.tampineszone.com/SportsHall.htm

The competition started yesterday for Round 1. In all, 63 teams will compete in 8 Groups:

    http://pacsc.org.sg/images/MungoBlobs/IBadT2011/cg2011-badgroupinground1.pdf

Since each team is expected to field a mamimum of 8 players in 5 events:

    (a) Active Ager/Veteran Men’s Doubles; (2)
    (b) Women’s Singles; (1)
    (c) Mixed Doubles; (2)
    (d) Men’s Singles; (1) and
    (e) Men’s Doubles. (2)

Therefore the total number of players involved in Round 1 works out to a maximum of 504 (63 Teams x 8 players). This is by no means a small number. And this is competitive badminton, so the number of social players will be many times more. Just an indication of how popular the game is in Singapore. :D

I wasn't there yesterday morning at Tampinese to witness the Round 1 matches but here are the results:

    http://pacsc.org.sg/images/MungoBlobs/IBadT2011/rd1fixtures10apr.pdf

Three seeded teams namely, Yew Tee, Pasir Ris East, Pasir Ris West advanced to the next round. While Chua Chu Kang got a bye, two other seeded teams, Siglap and Chong Pang lost to Sembawang and Mountbaten respectively. A friend who is playing as a reserve in the Sembawang team said they have many good players from China and Indonesia (?).

Unfortunately, the detailed scores have not been released.

Sembawang will meet Hougang in Group 5 on Fri, 15 April at 7.30 pm. Matches for the other teams are spaced out at different dates.

Will Sembawang be the dark horse this year and go on to win the tournament?

It is hard to say at such an early stage of the tournament which is expected to last till next month. :D
