Make-or-break situation for Hafiz

HAFIZ Hashim needs to win the ongoing New Zealand International Challenge in Auckland and make at least the semi-finals of the Australian Open next week if he wants to improve his chances of qualifying for the World Championships.

Hafiz, currently ranked World No 33, must break into the top 24 by the end of April but good results are needed in order to make the cut.

Andre Kurniawan Tedjono of Indonesia should provide Hafiz with an early test in Auckland while Hu Yun of Hong Kong will be pushing the Malaysian hard in an expected semi-final clash.

Should Hafiz make it to the final, he is likely to face Indonesia's Tommy Sugiarto in the final.

National back-up shuttlers Goh Soon Huat, Arif Latif and Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin have no opportunity to qualify for the World Championships as they are out of the top 100.

Soon Huat plays Brent Miller of New Zealand, Arif takes on third seed Wong Wing Ki of Hong Kong while Iskandar is up against Tommy in first round matches today.

Hafiz will face a tougher passage in the Australian Open in Melbourne where a host of Japanese shuttlers will aiming for his scalp.

Hafiz opens his campaign against Kazuteru Kozai of Japan and is likely to meet Andre Kurniawan again in the second round and victory will pit him against another difficult opponent in Sho Sasaki, also from Japan, in the third round.

A win will most likely see him playing Alamsyah Yunus of Indonesia and second seed Nguyen Tien Minh could be his semi-final opponent.

Well, he's on the right track, having defeated Nicholas Jinadasa (USA) 21-12, 21-15 in Round 1 of the New Zealand IC.

He will face local Joe Wu in Round 2.

Hafiz in second round of New Zealand tourney

PETALING JAYA: KLRC’s Mohd Hafiz Hashim advanced to the second round of the New Zealand International Challenge men’s singles competition after dispatching Nicholas Jinadasa of the United States 21-12, 21-15 in Auckland yesterday.

The world No. 33, playing in his second tournament under the KLRC banner since leaving the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), will take on Joe Wu of New Zealand for a place in the third round.

National back-up shuttler Goh Soon Huat also progressed to the second round for a match against top seed Hu Yun of Hong Kong.

However, it was the end of the road for two other back-up shuttlers, Mohd Arif Abdul Latif and Iskandar Zulkarnian Zainuddin.

Arif was beaten by third-fourth seed Wong Wing Ki of Hong Kong 16-21, 15-21 while Iskandar took second seed Tommy Sugiarto of Indonesia to three games before losing 21-17, 8-21, 19-21.

Former national shuttler K. Yogendran and the other Malaysian in the fray, Chiang Jiann Shiarng, won their first-round matches.

Well, HH has beaten Joe Wu 21-7, 21-8, and then Andre Kurniawan Tedjono 21-19, 25-23.

He will face Kazumasa Sakai from Japan in the Quarterfinals.

Best of luck to him! He's the only Malaysian left in MS. BOLEH!

The only Malaysian men singles player, you mean

He managed to scrape through Andre, let's see if he can achieve his target of winning the title. His win over Joe was 21-7; 21-6 I thought..

It was 21-7, 21-8, you are right, I've edited it. But I did write that the only one left in men's singles. "He's the only Malaysian left in MS", I wrote.

I just woke up so I make mistakes.

KLRC’s Hafiz makes it to last eight of NZ tourney

PETALING JAYA: KLRC’s Mohd Hafiz Hashim is the sole Malaysian survivor in the men’s singles event of the New Zealand International Challenge after beating Indonesia’s Andre Kurniawan Tedjono 21-19, 25-23 in the third round in Auckland yesterday.

The joint third-fourth seed had earlier beaten Joe Wu of New Zealand 21-7, 21-8 in the second round.

Hafiz will play Kazumasa Sakai of Japan in today’s quarter-finals.

K. Yogendran, the former national shuttler, failed to clear his second round match. He lost 10-21, 18-21 to India’s R.M.V. Datt Gurusaidatt.

National back-up shuttler Goh Soon Huat’s challenge also came to an end in the second round. He was beaten 15-21, 19-21 by top seed Hu Yun of Hong Kong.

However, there was joy for the Malaysian camp when the men’s doubles pairs of Lim Khim Wah-Goh Wei Shem and Chooi Kah Ming-Ow Yao Han qualified for the quarter- finals.

The new combination of Khim Wah-Wei Shem were made to slog in the first round by Taiwanese Liang Jui Wei-Liao Kuan Hao before prevailing 21-19, 27-25.

However, they came back strongly in the second round to defeat qualifiers Tony Griffen-Shane Masinipeni of New Zealand 21-17, 21-8.

Former world junior champions Kah Ming-Yao Han also defeated a New Zealand pair – James Eunson-Oliver Leydon Davis – 21-13, 21-6 to set up a clash with Hiroyuki Saeki-Ryota Taohata of Japan for a place in the semi-finals.

Who is Riichi Takeshita? I only know Shoji and Tago... but who is Habiz Hashim? Ex-All England champion... in his late 20s... oh wow...

Very impressed with Riichi...he had a pretty damn hard draw but he
beat Hu Yun
beat Hsu Jen Hao
beat Habis Hashim
and beat Wong Wing Ki all in straight games to win the title

I think we'll be seeing more of him soon!

Give him more time lah... Hopefully he will bounce back strongly to win Cambodia Open, Philippines Open, Myanmar Open, Sri Lanka Open, Mauritius Open, etc... BOLEH?
