    hey guys,

I used to be an average player in school, recreational only though .. never played professional. I used to have a cheap yonex racket but still had good strenth in my shots and my smashes were pretty good.

I stopped playing for a couple of years in between(college!). Recently, I bought membership for a club, bought a new racket (Yonex Nanospeed 500) and started playing again. My style of game is offensive(power play) and most play singles.

The problem is, I have been playing regularly for 2 weeks but I simply can't get any power in my shots. I have 24lbs tension on my NS500 and I understand that it will take some time to get used to it but i've been pretty unhappy with my shots/smashes.

Now I know its hard to tell what i'm doing wrong without watching me play, but do you guys have any general advise to hit clean powerful offensive shots ?

    Hi ashwin.302,

    Welcome to BadmintonCentral !!! :):):)

From your first post, it looks like you have lost touch with your Footwork and Strokes after stopping playing for a couple of years.

Try not to blame your tool (your racket). ;););)

    To be able to hit clean powerful offensive shots, you need to;

    (1) Get into position (Footwork)
    (2) Have good technique in your Stroke

Perhaps, you could read threads from our Techniques/Training Forum.

Actually, this thread should be in our Techniques/Training Forum - Perhaps soon our admin/moderators will move this thread to there.

firstly, don't force it, ie. don't try to power it thru
make sure your contact point is short and crisp, ie. compact and focused
once you get the timing right, then you can gradually increase power and soon you'll get the hang of it again

this is an excellent article written by Gollum on this forum, especially re the all important forearm pronation

yea I am trying too hard to hit smashes to the point that my shoulder hurts.

I need to get my timing right. I'm definitely not blaming my racket, this new one is infinitely better than my previous one. In fact I tried 6 rackets before I bought this one.

thanks for your reply guys. that thread on forehand power shots is amazing. thanks!

don't try to smash again and again
you should get your technique right first
you should ask your partner for a practice

another problem would be, you use 24lbs
20-22 should be more than enough
and also, NS500 is not too suitable for smash since it is a head light racket

you need to get your technique right before you can utilize the racket, so don't worry about your racket
