http://www.hmetro.com.my/myMetro/art...cle/index_html As i read the article on Metro on the above link, i have to voice out how i look at the situation on this matter. 1. Players of yesteryears had less support from professional coaches who had the 'know hows and the techniques of different styles of attacking play and counter attacking as badminton in the days of 1970s and 1960s was merely just hatching. Players like Wong Peng Soon and Eddy Choong no doubt are kings on court in their era, had less up and coming or budding badminton stars to deal with except for the likes of Indonesia's Rudy Hartono and China's super thing call Mr Tang. Players in the modern era now have to deal with more highly skill players because as badminton progresses, more and more world champions becomes coaches. With LCW staying at no. 1 for more than a year already is considered a feat. 2. Professor Khoo stated that LCW has not reached the skill level of Datuk Eddy Choong or Wong Peng Soon. Mind you, the playing style nowadays has completely changed from the stroke playing days of the 60s where shuttlecocks were slower and racquets were made from the trees. With improvement in sports equipment speed and power has dominated the game now. So i think this is an unfair comparison on LCW. Except for Lin Dan, who else come close to such consistency in world rankings for more than a year? I mean even Lin is not world no 1 now even though we all know that he is one of the best. 3. Professor Khoo commented that he has no idea if Chong Wei will take the London Olympics gold for Malaysia. That's just like saying I don't know the 4D number that is coming out tomorrow! 4. Look at the Malaysian badminton situation now with only LCW to shoulder the stress of being the world's badminton no 1 player. There is no one else that come close to him in Malaysia and hence in term of quality sparing partners, it is lacking. And while this is happening, to add insult to injury, there is uncertainty about his mentor coach to guide him. Give him a break! If anyone thinks there's any better idea to improve Malaysia's lacking of potential world beaters please do so. In the meantime, lay off the pressure on him.
Very typical of armchair critics. It is a lot easier to trample on someone else's dreams than to strive towards your own.
The next thing to seriously think about is the possibility of setting up professional clubs as the current situation in BAM has not produced a decent crop of potential world beaters besides losing in the early rounds. I am also seeing the sports management moving towards a very 'corporate' style of management, like those you see in the show called The Apprentice. Li Mao, former coach from China who once coach Malaysia, has once commented that the coach does not have the power to selectively train a player he finds had the right requirements to be a world beater.
couldn't read the original article... just because he's a professor (of history, i might add), doesn't mean he knows what he's talking about re badminton and sports the fact that there is no other mas singles backup player that is even close to lcw speaks volumes about lcw's incredible feat for mas
Here's another link for you guys. Read. http://www.sepaku.net/sembang-santai/44665-keupayaan-chong-wei-meraih-emas-olimpik-2012-diragui.html
Dont have to be upset or concerned abt Prof Khoo's comments, just treat like he's talking in the air. There've been many such comments over years from all sorts of people, life still goes on, take note also that Harian Metro is more critical of sportsmen/women in general.
Once he start to compare LCW to players from 70', practically can ignore him la. I am not supporter of LCW but i do see he put in a lot of hardwork to be who he is now. The prof's comment......he already nyanyuk kut.
Professor Khoo Kay Kim commenting on LCW Professor Khoo stated that LCW has not reached the skill level of Datuk Eddy Choong or Wong Peng Soon? It's like saying that the techniques in Badminton of today are not as good as those of half a century ago. .
Totally agree, fr non-Malaysians Nyanyuk=senile. A lot of people have a lot of respect for him in the past because he was a history professor but in recent times he has made a lot of laughable comments on current issues and for gossip tabloids like Metro at that. I think he is now like the 3 Datuk stooges currently promoting pornography. Whatever he says may have some truth though from the point of view of a layman, but it is just his personal opinion, not expert opinion.
Some BCers have more credibility and authority.. ahem... We live and die badminton. What does the other do?
The prof should have presented some statistical data and publish a scientific article in regard to his claims.
