i dont think they can earn that much ... i believe it's only about 30-40K for good players ... remember that they have to share with the badminton organization who sponsored them ... and some of the money will go to the coach as well, and then there is tax.

The biggest tournaments are the World championship and Olympics. No prize money though...but you may make money from endorsements and appearance fees. Plus the country may give you some money for sprting acheivement and national pride. That would depend on which country. The men's singles winner of the recent Korean Open got somewhere around 14 000USD. Maybe a bit less. But this was teh first time he has won such a high ranking tournament and he has been playing for years. In fact, for grandprix tournaments, he has only won a couple of minor tourneys in the past.

I think Cheung gives as close a picture to what a pro can earn, bearing in mind that some of these tourneys do not come every year like the Thomas Cup (no individual rewards, however these could take the form of gifts from well-wishers/business enterprises, monetary rewards from the governmental authorities and commercial endorsements), the recently concluded Sudirman Cup, the Olympics, etc. Special rewards are given by the Singapore government for team and individual events for the Southeast Asian Games, the Commonwealth Games, the Asian Games and the Olympic Games. These can range from Sing$10,000 for a bronze medal in the SEA Games to $1 million (US$565,000) for an Olympic gold medal, which occurs every four years. Not bad if you won the Olympic gold plus some IBF tourneys like the Korean Open every year donning Singapore colours! But you have to be the best and have the luck to sustain a consistent form during actual match play.
how about sponsorship from yonex? doesnt yonex pay the players to put on yonex logo all over themselves?
It's very hard to be answered. If we talking about international level, there's may have a standard, however, with tons of regional tournaments (assume belongs to your "small" category), price could be varied based on the region the pros living in. For example, Mid-Atlantic Classic is considered as one of the largest in US Eastern region. I believe the top performer will wrapped up several thousand dollars (don't know the exact amount, but I can check). On the other hand, in china, many high level providence games or even city games, we know those pros are way better than the ones in Mid-Atlantic Classics. I don't think they can get prize in RMB for the equal amount as several thousand US dollars. (1 US$ = 8.2 RMB). However, many ppl indicated the living expense in china will be way lower than in US. Therefore, top badminton pros in china consider this sport as a good career, and living a relatively high std life. Pros in US can hardly do that, many of them have to get another job (coach, dealership, club owner, etc) to survive. So, I don't think we can just compare the amount of $$$ itself, since it's has a lot of to do with the nation's economic factors.
