I've never bought a grip before but recently decided to buy a Yonex towel grip. I was wondering if i have to take off my stock grip and put the towel grip on the wood or do i put something like athletic tape on the wood then put the towel grip on?
    Please help.

It is all your preference. You can put it on any way you like as long as it's reasonable.

one thing for sure, towel grip is pretty thick, for me, I will not going to put a towel grip over a replacement grip like that
but yes, it is up to your preference, some people like thick handle

to me, it's indeed last longer. but surely thick, as per commented above. so suggest to shorten the grip instead of using it as ONE piece in total.

I finally found a thread for linking this link I found about wrapping towel grips :D

As for the directions, if you do not read Chinese then at least following each progressive picture should be educational enough. It also contains the author's personal replication of Taufik Hidayat and Lin Dan's towel grip wrapping style.

Is that just electrical tape over the wood?

If you read the [Chinese] description text, the author said that he indeed used electrical tape to cover the raw wooden handle.
