Since there is no thread for Tommy Sugiarto in Indonesian Professional Players, I will create one. I think Tommy deserve his own thread in proper place. Hopefully mods can merge Tommy Sugiarto thread in http://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/showthread.php/37521-Tommy-Sugiarto.
However, I will quote some posting from those thread in here as well.

    Basic Info
    Name : Tommy Sugiarto
    ID BWF : 14587
    Place of Birth : Jakarta
    DoB : 31 May 1988
    Club : PELITA BAKRIE JAKARTA
    Current rank : 30 (ranking week 2011-14)

    Achievements:
    2011 to date: : 2 SS, 1 IIC, 1 national tourney
Australia Open GPG : SF (to date)
New Zaeland International Challenge : SF
DJARUM SIRNAS REG VII KALTENG HI-QUA OPEN 2011 : Winner

At 2 SS, Tommy lost from Lin Dan and LCW, but able to provide good fight to those 2 giants.
At Australia GPG, he defeated top 10 player (Boonsak), I think this is his first time.

    2010: 2 SS, 1 GPG, 2 GP, 1 Asian Championship, 3 IIC, 1 Int Series, 2 national tourney,
Laos International Challenge 2010 : Winner
Malaysia International Challenge 2010 : Winner
Bahrain International Challenge 2010 : Winner
    SIRNAS REG.VI PIALA GUBSU 2010 : Winner
    DJARUM SIRNAS REG.IX YONEX-SUNRISE BALI OPEN 2010 : Winner

    2009: 2 SS, 2 GPG, 2 GP
YONEX SUNRISE INDIA OPEN 2009 : SF
    Yonex-Sunrise Vietnam Open GP 2009 : SF

    2008: 5 SS, 3 GPG, 1 Asian Championship, 1 national tourney
    - max QF for GP, lost early round at SS

    2007: 1SS, 4 GPG, 3 GP, 1 Asian Championship, 2 national tourneys
    - Kejurnas Surakarta : SF

    2006:
    World Junior Championships - Finalist

From those, tournaments that Tommy participate, his achievements at SS is still the same, but definitely he is more consistent when facing mid level players.
Before 2010, he often lost to even lower rank players.

    Profiled by Australian Open 2011:
Son of former Indonesian Badminton Legend Icuk Sugiarto, Tommy was always destined for big things in Badminton. He had a highly accomplished junior career peaking with a 2nd in the 2006 World Junior Championships. Tommy broke through with 3 International Challenge wins in 2010, proving his spot on the world stage. A star of the future!

Thanks for starting the thread. Tommy certainly deserves his ranking so far and with 2 credible performance against Lin Dan and Lee Chong Wei early this year, hopefully, those 2 defeats will spur him to reach even higher rankings. 2007-2009 were nightmare years for him...no thanks to the mismanagement of his tourneys by PBSI. It's a good thing he left Pelatnas last year, otherwise, he might still be in the 100+ ranking.

I am quite confident that Tommy can at least break top 20 by the end of this year. A title or two at GP or GPG level tourney will do him good.

The tourneys that I think he might participate:
    May - Malaysia Open GPG
June -Thailand Open GPG, Singapore SS, Indonesia SSP
    July - Indonesia IC
    Aug - Vietnam Open GP
Sep - Chinese Open GPG, Indonesia Open GPG
Nov - Bahrain IC, Malaysia IC
Dec - India IC, India GP

12 tourneys to choose from and I am pretty sure he will participate in the 3 home tourneys.

Tommy has a phenomenal win-loss record last year (43-9 for international tourneys and 13-2 for domestic tourneys), from which he won 3 IC titles and 2 Sirnas titles. He also reached the Final of the WUBC Individual Event and India IC 2010.

Domestically, he lost to Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka at the Kejurnas 2009 and Andre Marteen (retired in third-set) at the Sirnas Sinar Mutiara Cup 2010. He beat serial Sirnas winners like Fauzi Adnan, Senatria Agus Setia P., Achmad Rivai, and Bandar Sigit Pamungkas.

For international tourneys, he lost to:
    P. Kashyap at the BAC 2010 R32 and India GP 2010 QF
Shon Sheung Mo at the Singapore IS 2010 QF
Ary Trisnanto at the Indonesia IC 2010 QF
Shon Wan Ho at the WUBC 2010 Team Event
Hsueh Hsuan-Yi at the WUBC 2010 Individual Event F
Tian Houwei at the Vietnam Open GP 2010 QF
Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka at the Indonesia GPG 2010 QF
Alamsyah Yunus at the India IC 2010 F

As a correction, Tommy did not participate in any SS events last year.
He participated in 2 GPG events (including the BAC), 2 GP events, 5 IC events and 1 IS event.
He also represented INA at the WUBC Team and Individual Event.

Ah ya, thanks for the correction badMania, Tommy didn't participate in any SS events at 2010.
If I am not remember it wrongly, he also defeated Du Pengyu last year.
So, I do hope that his potential wouldn't be wasted again this time.
I remember that at MAS SS this year, he surprised Lee Chong Wei by leading 7-1 early at first set before losing that set.
ANd then he led almost throughout 2nd set before LCW injected his pace to the max.
Lee Chong Wei is a kind of player with play-play kind to any player, he tend to finish his opponent as quick as possible. But Tommy gave him hard time.

Too bad Tommy lost to WCH yesterday. But still ok, not easy one though.

As for me, it would be tough call between TH, Simon, and Tommy.

Saw Tommy play 2 days ago in the AU GPG semi against WCH. He played really2 well, a complete type of player. The only thing he needs is a powerful smash.

Hong Kong Open 1988 (beat Yang Yang in the Final)
    Indonesian Open 1982, 1986 & 1988
Malaysian Open 1984 (beat Morten Frost in the Final)
    SEA Games Gold Medal 1985, 1987 & 1989
    Taiwan Masters 1983 & 1986
    Thailand Open 1984 & 1985

World Cup 1985 & 1986 (beat Morten Frost in both Finals)

Hope Tommy will be as victorious as his father.

When I saw Tommy played in a tournament two years ago, his game reminded me of his father's style. Very similar, only Tommy is lacking in the power department. Also, needs to improve on his movements if he is to challenge the best in the world.

However, Tommy has better netplay than his father. Icuk Sugiarto is better in counter-attacking, as he is predominantly a defensive player. Icuk also has a very good rearcourt/baseline game and his backhand is also good (but cannot compare to Taufik Hidayat).

Just sharing my opinion. Cheers all!!

Tommy's progress is a bit slowing down. Most probably because the level of competition is higher.
One thing, he bring different style of fighting spirit compared to the 4 stylist INA MS (TH, SDK, SS, DHR).

Wondering who is Tommy's coach? I doubt that his father coached him. According to a friend, Icuk is a very bad coach.
Yes, his wrist is is still very strong to do backhand. His backhand drive can push you back if you tried to match even with forehand :D.
If only Tommy, Alam, TH, SDK, SS and DHR can do sparring each other very often and push their each limit :D

That is inevitable, once he pushes himself to participate in GPG & SS level tourneys.

At least, he lost to players like Wong Choong Hann, Chen Jin, Lin Dan, and Lee Chong Wei (2x). Even players like Pablo Abian and Wong Wing Ki whom he lost to surprisingly are players who are either in form or emerging players.
