Once again the Canadian Open will be held at the Richmond Oval, where Taufik Hidayat thrilled the crowd en route to the MS title. It will be held from July 18-24. Hope the player turnout will be as good or better than last year. And the crowd too Official website: http://www.canadaopen.ca/
The player turn out should be quite good as players would want to maximize the opportunity to qualify for the Olympics next year. ctjcad had published the list of countries participating in the US Open which is just before the Canadian Open so expect to see bulk of those International players up here too. I believe that there is a list of players who have "confirmed" on the website (http://www.canadaopen.ca/players) pending illness and injuries. The Canadian Open is looking for volunteers and if you are interested, please email your interest to volunteer.canadaopen2011@gmail.com
The player list is looking good already. Praying that Wang Lin doesn't pull out as a precaution due to her injury
Hi All, As you may have heard, Lee Yong Dae and Taufik have both entered the Canada Open. We have also got some sponsors committed that will help this event be bigger and better than 2010. Note to all fans in Canada, our goal is be better than the US Open...not easy when they are a Gold Grand Prix and we are not. We have to make up for it in other ways and we hope to count on your support! See you at the Oval. Bobby Milroy Chairman Yonex Canada Open
News on the US Open thread says Wang Lin has withdrawn due to the injury she sustained in the Singapore Open
Bobby, we're looking forward to some of the promotions and events leading up to and during the Canadian Open. Please keep us up to date with that. I hope to see lots of media coverage to give it max exposure.
No Koreans are yet on the list of players on the website. Will that be updated or will we have to wait for the BWF list on Monday?
The Koreans have been added to the list, last minute entries. LYD is coming to Vancouver! http://www.canadaopen.ca/node/37
M/Q Report Here's M/Q Report version 1 (updated 27th June 2011), taken from BWF website : http://www.bwfbadminton.org/file_download.aspx?id=35076 Lee Young-dae will play 2 disciplines, MD and XD partnered with Ko Sung-hyun and Ha Jung-eun respectively.
I hope wang lin injury is getting better and won't withdrew from this tourney...she needs points to boost up her rank
Wonderful to see some of the big names coming to support the sport over here in the West. I see that former junior Sapsiree Taerattanachai from Thailand will be there. From the couple videos available on the net, she looks like a real firebrand. Maybe a star of the future.
Is this list current: http://www.bwfbadminton.org/file_download.aspx?id=35076 If so, these top MS players who are competing in the US Open will not be in Canada: Chen Jin, Bao Chunlai, Nguyen Tien Minh, Ponsana Boonsak.
The entry list looks great, glad to see many good players coming over I just really hope they have solved the sunlight glare that plagued some of the previous tournaments at the oval.
I'm disappointed the organizers didn't think of offering concession prices for students. After all, isn't one of the main objectives to draw a younger crowd to get them excited and into the sport? A full week at the Canadian Open will cost $115 (Weekly Ticket Pack). As a comparison, US Open is offering $80 (adults) and $60 (children) all-week passes.
Consider the price difference a quality-o-life tax for living in one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
Updated Tournament Poster Here is the new tournament poster for the 2011 Canada Open! It's a .pdf so you will need to download it to view it. Hope to see you all there!
