    Junk e-mails linked to Badmintonforum

    G'day all, help.

Since I've joined this forum over a year ago, my personal e-mail account has come under constant bombardment from useless companies sending me ads from America about home loans, viagra products or share offers.

At the beginning this was just little annoying things that I consider as part of life, but now everytime I log on to check my e-mails, I get at least 10 junk mails that I have to clear out before I can get to the real important stuff.

It has also occurred to me that the more I post here at Badmintonforum, the more junk e-mails I receive from US companies who claim that I am receiving emails from them as "I have accessed their affiliated sites". Well I know for sure Kwun would not have intentionally allowed this to happen! So someone out there is taking an advantage of this fantastic badminton website for their own needs without consent of this site founder.

Has anyone else experienced something similar? And if so, how did you over come this?

Any comments and sugguestions welcome :(

U sure that's because of Badminton Central??? Not because u accidentally post up ur information in some other sites u visited??? Or, just the email server provider u using? (for a period of time, hotmail seems sending endless junks to ppl's account)

I mean, I never received anything like that. If that's US companies, I am sure they should target ppl like me, who's living in US first.

ayl, I'm not sure about that.

For BF, I have a badmintoncentral e-mail. The only advertising I got was one from Forza. Other e-mails have been related to BF board.

I noticed junk e-mail increasing after I e-mailed some people about SARS and said they could pass on the information. I don't do many mass e-mails specifically because of junk mail so the temporal relationship fits with my e-mailing history.

    Also, just a suggestion...

I know how frustrated u r. However, I don't think it's right to just question ppl or site just because they are "US companies". I am not finger pointing about u are wrong, but I am sure u should visited more than 1 US-based site just rather than Badminton Central.

It's also possible, some other sites u ever joined, or even teh email ur using took ur information and provided to other business firms.

I am not saying, u should never ask, but the title something like "junk email related with Badminton Forum" will surely bring very bad reputation for this site. Can u imagine what guest will think when they read this thread??? They will be scared to sign up, for something possibly has NOTHING to do with this forum.

I could be wrong, but like I metioned in previous post, I believe "If that's US companies, I am sure they should target ppl like me, who's living in US first". Also, never heard any US members bringing up this issue.

So, my suggestion is double check ur "web surfing" history before really narrow down the suspect.

G'day, thanks for the prompt response.

Looks like I might be the odd one out here with this problem. My server is indeed a US company but based in Sydney, Australia. The only site where I ever post is here at BadmintonCentral / Forum so that's why I thought this might be the source of problem.

I'll for time being delete my e-mail address from my user's board and see if this improves the situation. So sorry for anyone who's used to contact me directly to my personal account - have to go through PM first!

Can Bigredlemon please design me a anti-spam software that resembles a racket swatting a shuttle when I receive another junk mail? ;)

I see what u mean. However, if I were u, I will question about the "service" company u using first.

    Here's my story:

I live in US, and has no useage about Japanese sites so ever (don't know Japanese anyway). For a period of time, some japanese companies /sites (some even written in japanese) kept doing junk email to me. I was really confused. Later on, I think it might because my friend (study aboard in japan) using my email to send e-greetings to me. So, even though I never join a forum in Japan, somehow, they still being able to get my email (when I pick up the e-card, for example).

So, maybe u should question ur "service provider" first.

Yes good point there Lazybuddy, I should have thought about this prior posting this topic.

Apologies for sounding like finger pointing here. Can moderators lock or delete this post please?

I've read somewhere that some companies target some internet servers to get the e-mails addresses for their advertising purposes.

I've my e-mail address given by my e-mail provider. This address I've given out only to 1 friend and after his first e-mail for sometime I've receiving junk mail. From that day I've only given out my webmail address and been using it. The yahoo one seems quite handy. I allows me to look before opening them and delete immediatelly the ones that I do not want. Unfortunatelly there still not programs that can fight spam 100%.

One other thing is when receiving junk mail do not respond. Sometimes there's a link telling you to unsubscribe. By clicking it you just confirmed your e-mail address. Or you can also change your reply mail address in your e-mail program - i.e. ayl@here.com to ayl@herefalse.com and a note in the email telling your friends to remove the 'false' when replying.

    Hope this helps.

Don't worry too much, ayl. I know how pissed the feeling is, if I were u.

However, good point about "modify" this thread. If possible, maybe we should at least change the topic of the thread to something like "about junk email".
