Singapore’s youngsters start their first professional training session

Singapore’s young players, who qualified in the trials for the National Intermediate Squad (NIS), have taken their first training session in Singapore, on Monday, May 30.

The 19 qualified players, who are between 12 to 16 years of age, received their training from professional coaches. The squad of eleven boys and eight girls will be working under the supervision of competent coaches.

Singapore Badminton Association (SBA) is directly working to supervise the performance of these selected shuttlers from all over the country.

Li Qingdong is the official coach for the squad and has been given the responsibility to improve the tactical and technical skills of the youngsters. Former national shuttlers, Liu Fan and Jiang Yanmei, will assist the coach in training sessions.

The coach said, “If Singapore badminton wants to reach great heights, they players will need to go through this strict training and the tough schedule.”

The players are being selected after a close observation and evaluation in the trials. Now, the coaches are working to understand the players from different aspects of the game.

The coach added, “We’re observing their strengths, weaknesses and style of play right now. We will also focus on correcting their techniques, and enhance their range of skills, and even work on making them stronger mentally in order for them to become world class players.”

The training schedule has been designed for the shuttlers, according to which they will be working hard for three hours on a daily basis from Monday to Saturday.

It has been decided that the training will be divided into two blocks and every slot will take four to five months. The players will be free for about one month for their educational exams.

However, it will be mandatory for every player to attend at least 85 percent of the training session, failure to which will expel the player from the squad.

The SBA has taken a positive step in the right direction to promote Badminton in Singapore. If everything proceeds according to plan, these young players will bring glory to their country by playing well at the international level in the future.

Badminton: Young shuttlers take first steps in quest for glory

    Channel NewsAsia

By Philip Goh Haw Hann, TODAY | Posted: 31 May 2011 0648 hrs

    [IMG] [IMG]

SINGAPORE: The whiplash of venomous smashes and the frantic squeak of sneakers were the usual sounds coming out of the Singapore Sports School badminton hall on Monday. This time, though, it did not come from the school's players alone.

Nineteen young shuttlers took their first steps on what they hope will be a journey that ends in glory, when the new National Intermediate Squad (NIS) was officially unveiled by the Singapore Badminton Association (SBA).

The 11 boys and eight girls, aged between 12 and 16, were selected after a trial with 30 hopefuls in January. The group started training officially on Monday and they are in for hard work and will have to make a number of personal sacrifices.

Former Sichuan province women's coach Liu Qingdong has been tasked to groom the youngsters, assisted by ex-national players Jiang Yanmei and Liu Fan.

Referring to the demanding regimen they face, he said: "If Singapore badminton wants to reach great heights, they players will need to go through this strict training and the tough schedule.

"We're observing their strengths, weaknesses and style of play right now. We will also focus on correcting their techniques, and enhance their range of skills, and even work on making them stronger mentally in order for them to become world class players."

Shuttlers in the NIS will undergo three hours of on-court training from Monday to Saturday, with an extra two hours on Saturday for physical conditioning. They will get Sunday off.

There will be two training blocks each year - 16 and 20 weeks - with time off during exams. Competitions both overseas and at home have also been factored in. Trainees need to attend at least 85 per cent of all sessions in order to stay in the squad.

Ryan Ng, 13, is the youngest among the boys, and he's taking the challenge in his stride.

"I just have to have good time management so that I can cope with studies and badminton," the Raffles Institution student said. "I think one has to sacrifice one's play time in order to become a better player." - TODAY

NTU set for a sports R&D centre

    By Tan Yo-Hinn, TODAY | Posted: 07 June 2011 0644 hrs

SINGAPORE: Over the next few months, fans here will be served up a treat.

Badminton's best will hit town next week for the Li-Ning Singapore Open, the 23rd Canon Lion City Cup following the badminton showpiece will feature some of the world's best young footballers.

The best teams will lock horns at the Mission Foods World Netball Championship in July and September will see Formula 1's fastest and loudest cars roar around Marina Bay once again.

Table tennis will take centre-stage in October at the Volkswagen Women's World Cup.

The Lion City has increasingly become an attractive venue for regional and international sporting events and, soon, it could be home to Asia's largest sports research and development centre.

MediaCorp has learnt that a new facility, provisionally called the Institute for Sports Research (ISR), will be set up to conduct research and development work in sports.

It is part of a joint-collaboration between the Economic Development Board (EDB), the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and England's Loughborough University, an internationally renowned centre for sports research.

Details of the project have yet to be confirmed, but the EDB are expected to fund the project for five years, and the proposed facility will be housed within the NTU's sprawling 200-hectare campus in Jurong West.

While an official announcement is expected later in the year, several companies, including a number from the sports industry, have already indicated they are keen on being part of the project, whose objectives include developing state-of-the-art innovations and technology, including the design, development and testing of sports equipment like balls and boots, as well as work on areas such as robotics and sensor technology.

Presently, some of the world's leading sports research facilities include the adidas Innovation Team in Herzogenaurach and Portland, the Gatorade Sports Science Institute in Barrington, and the Sports Turf Research Institute in West Yorkshire.

Last month, MediaCorp reported that the EDB were negotiating with the Sanchez-Casal tennis academy to set up a facility here as part of the Kallang Sports City project, which could also boast similar research and development capabilities.

The Kallang Sports City is the first of the three-tiered Sports Facilities Master Plan which was announced in Parliament in March by the-then Senior Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports Teo Ser Luck, who is now Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry.

Singapore swimming icon Ang Peng Siong believes moving towards research and development in sports is the right step forward.

"It would benefit Singapore as a whole," said Ang, 49, who competed at the 1984 and 1988 Olympics.

" ... If we look at the sports industry itself, having R&D is an additional step forward, and if it does attract the big research companies and laboratories specialising in sports, then definitely it'll attract the big names."

Singapore's move towards becoming a sports research and development hub will also complement the upcoming S$1.33 billion Sports Hub - which will be ready by April 2014 - and the Singapore Sports Institute that will be housed at Kallang.

"With the establishment of the Singapore Sports Institute, it will all grow nicely together," said Ang. "It's really part of the sporting culture where being able to do research and support will produce findings that will go towards our daily affairs." - TODAY

A smash for Yao Lei, Shinta's Olympic dream

    by Tan Yo-Hinn
    04:46 AM Jun 06, 2011

SINGAPORE - Yao Lei and Shinta Sari Mulia have received a major boost ahead of the defence of their doubles title at the Li-Ning Singapore Open badminton championships from June 14-19: The duo can now tap into the Republic's Olympic Pathway Programme (OPP) in their build-up to the 2012 London Olympics.

They become the first shuttlers to be included in the multimillion-dollar programme, which has a war chest of S$6.3 million to help selected national athletes at the Olympics.

"They have performed well and met the qualifying mark, and we should give them that "final-stretch" support. I," OPP steering committee chairman Teo Ser Luck told MediaCorp recently.

World No 11 women's doubles pair Yao Lei, 21, and Shinta, 22, are Singapore's highest-ranked players for the upcoming US$200,000 (S$245,579) Li-Ning Singapore Open at the Indoor Stadium.

Said Singapore Badminton Association (SBA) chief executive officer Bobby Lee: "We've planned with the Singapore Sports Council (SSC) what competitions they will go for as well as funding for physiotherapy and other sports science (services)."

The SBA will send them to as many top-tier international meets as possible, including the remaining nine Super Series events to allow them to earn ranking points and qualify for the London Games. "The idea is for them to chalk as much points as possible to be within the top four seeds and avoid facing the top two pairs early in the (Olympic) competition," said Lee.

Their inclusion means the OPP now funds eight elite athletes: Table tennis players Feng Tianwei, Wang Yuegu, Sun Beibei and Yu Mengyu, shooter and newly-minted Sportswoman of the Year Jasmine Ser and 2008 Beijing Olympics swimming finalist Tao Li.

Launched in May 2009, the OPP is funded by the Government and Tote Board, and provides additional logistical, technical and financial support to the athletes in their quest for Olympic glory. Added Teo: "The (OPP's) current athlete base is still small and we have to select athletes for the Olympics (in Rio)." Tan Yo-Hinn

Let's see whether they can defend their title won by them last year:)
    It's unlikely though.

    Double blow for S'pore

Hendri and Hendra quit, say SBA targets too tough

    by Low Lin Fhoong
    04:47 AM Jun 07, 2011

SINGAPORE - Seven months after they won the bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games, men's doubles pair Hendri Kurniawan Saputra and Hendra Wijaya have quit the Singapore badminton team.

Speaking to MediaCorp yesterday, Singapore Badminton Association's (SBA) chief executive officer Bobby Lee confirmed that the brothers had tendered their resignations on May 3.

Said Lee: "High performance manager Chew Keet Hou and I spoke to them in April before they put in their resignations, and we talked about whether they wanted to continue with us. They wanted to resign because they felt that the targets set by SBA were too difficult to achieve, especially for Hendri because of his age.

"They wanted to try out as sparring partners or professional players and seek out their own sponsorship from companies. We had no positions as sparring partners or assistant coaches so we had to let them go."

Hailing from Central Java, Indonesia, Hendri, 30, and 25-year-old Hendra joined the SBA in 2000, and obtained their citizenship five years later.

Both players, who are siblings of Shinta Mulia Sari - she partnered Yao Lei to win the 2010 Li-Ning Singapore Open women's doubles title - attained their highest doubles ranking of world No 20 just before they won the doubles bronze at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi last October.

The pair won a doubles silver and were part of the men's team that finished second to Indonesia at the 2007 SEA Games in Thailand.

Hendri has achieved more success - he partnered former national player Li Yujia to win bronze in the mixed doubles at the 2006 Commonwealth Games and two bronze medals at the 2005 and 2007 SEA Games - while Hendra encountered a disciplinary problem for missing three days of training without approval and was suspended for three months last May.

He bounced back in April this year, partnering Danny Bawa Chrisnanta to win the men's doubles title at the Li-Ning New Zealand International Challenge.

Lee admitted that the latest development has dealt a blow to the national men's team, who will aim to defend the team bronze at the SEA Games in Palembang, Indonesia, in November.

Said Lee: "KPIs set are the same for other national players, and they are not overly ambitious targets.

"Their (Hendri and Hendra) resignations are definitely a loss to the national team, and it's going to be extremely difficult to defend our men's team bronze (at the SEA Games).

"In a good way, they spoke to us earlier so we have more time ahead of the SEA Games. We are trying to prepare our other two men's doubles pairs, Chayut Triyachart and Liu Yi, Terry Yeo and Jonathan Tang, but this is a big blow to us.

"There will be some reshuffling in the team, but we'll have to wait till after next week's Li-Ning Singapore Open."

    Fourth spot dashes Zhang's hopes

    by Low Lin Fhoong
    04:47 AM Jun 08, 2011

SINGAPORE - Shuttler Zhang Beiwen's attempt to rejoin the national team has fizzled out, after the 20-year-old finished fourth of six players at the Singapore Badminton Association's (SBA) open trials for the SEA Games last week.

Once ranked the highest in the Singapore women's team at world No 21, the 2008 Vietnam Grand Prix Open champion had hoped to make the cut for the six-member (three men, three women) SEA Games squad bound for Palembang, Indonesia, in November.

However, her fourth place finish in last week's trial have doomed her career with the national team. According to the SBA, a top place finish would have guaranteed an automatic spot in the squad. "She didn't do too well and it's unlikely that she will make the SEA Games team," said a source.

Ranked 115th in the world currently, Zhang will now compete in next week's Li-Ning Singapore Open at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

China-born Zhang has had a troubled relationship with the SBA. Two months ago, the national sports association refused to renew her contract, citing disciplinary issues.

In April 2008, she parted ways with the SBA to compete in Malaysia and Taiwan but returned seven months later. In May last year, she was suspended without pay for three months for poor attitude during training and tournaments, and for failing to carry out her coach's instructions.

Ten months later, she was disciplined again for failing to return to the Singapore Sports School hostel after attending a New Year's Eve party. LOW LIN FHOONG

SINGAPORE - National paddler Wang Yuegu celebrated her 31st birthday four days earlier on Monday, as the world No.12 player got hitched to Taiwanese Gabriel Lee at the Registry of Marriages.

The couple were engaged in August 2009 after Lee's proposal at Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany, and are expected to host their formal wedding dinner at a later date.

    Chrisnanta, Neo shine

    by Low Lin Fhoong

SINGAPORE - They showed no fear going up against higher-ranked pair Nathan Robertson and Jenny Wallwork at the US$400,000 (S$516,500) Malaysia Badminton Open, and Singapore's mixed doubles pair Danny Bawa Chrisnanta and Vanessa Neo were rewarded yesterday with a 21-13, 21-17 victory to advance to the last eight.

Recovering from a jittery start, the Singaporeans, ranked world No 31, kept the rallies going against the faster, stronger pair of Robertson - who won the 2006 world title with Gail Emms - and Wallwork, eight spots ahead of them in the rankings.

This is the first time the Singapore pair had gone beyond the round of 16 at a Superseries event since pairing up in March last year. Neo, 25, was understandably delighted with the result.

Speaking to Today over the phone, she said: "We kept to our plan, and I'm happy with what we've achieved. We played a more patient game and tried to keep her (Wallwork) away from the net as she's fast up front. It's the first time we've played them and we were a little nervous, but there was no fear."

The Singaporeans will face Malaysia's Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying in today's quarterfinal at Kuala Lumpur's Putra Stadium.

Women's doubles pair Yao Lei and Shinta Mulia Sari lost 22-20, 9-21, 21-10 to Japanese top seeds Fujii Mizuki and Kakiiwa Reika in the round of 16. LOW LIN FHOONG

Danny Bawa Chrisnanta is a real gem in the SG team. I have seen him play good men doubles with Chayut before, but its a pity that he didn't get a better partner for XD in the QF against MAS today. He almost single-handedly defeated the MAS team while covering everywhere for his partner... If the girl was Yao Lei or just someone more steady and has better defense then they can be really strong.

I beg to differ. I have never seen Vanessa playing so well before. She was much steadier than Danny who made so many unforced errors to give the match to the Malaysians when they reached match point first. With more exposure, I'm sure the duo will become better. They have already done very well.

To beat an experienced and higher ranking pair like Nathan and Jenny shows that Vanessa can't be that bad. It doesn't mean that Yao Lei or Shinta can be a better partner for Danny because the XD is totally different game.

Another evidence that Yao Lei may not have done as well as Vanessa is that Yao and Chayut lost in R1 to the Indian pair of Diju and Jwala in three games.

Remember too that Danny and Vanessa even beat the Chinese in R1. Most would agree that the players that China sends overseas for competition are no pushovers, yet the Singapore pair with local-born Vanessa still prevailed.

I think you are making too much on the abilities of Pan Pan. Any player worth his/her salt now could beat a pair that consists of Pan Pan as one half of it.

For Yao Lei/Triyachart - it was a matter to keeping the shuttle away from Gutta's outstretched left arm and moving her around, which they did not do well.

After watching yesterday's match, it was Danny Bawa who really impressed me. Vanessa, on the other hand, was ordinary. If not for Danny Bawa, the SIN pair would have lost the match early. I would agree that he would probably be better off partnering Shinta, who's technically more accomplished than Vanessa.

No doubt, he's still raw as many of you have commented and he was personally responsible for losing the crucial pts during the deuce.

Well I think this is the only SIN XD that has gone this far up to QF in a SS and I believe the coach must have made the right selection to pair them off and Yao and Shinta with the other guys. They would have made Singapore history by entering the SF, had Danny not fumbled during the crucial stages. So far, I think Yao and Shinta have not made as much impact in XD as Danny and Vanessa.

I suppose the coach must have also considered that Yao and Shinta have a better chance of
qualifying for the LOG as a WD pair rather than dissipating too much of their energies in XD.

Chrisnanta, Neo's defeat due to lack of level experience

    by Philip Goh Haw Hann
    04:47 AM Jan 14, 2012

SINGAPORE - They had four match points but were unable to close out a famous victory over a pairing ranked in the world's top 10.

Instead, Singapore's mixed doubles pair of Danny Bawa Chrisnanta and Vanessa Neo were left wondering what could have been after crashing 13-21, 21-14, 25-27 in the quarter-finals of the Malaysia Badminton Open to Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying of the host country.

Their defeat at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil last night ended the Republic's challenge at the US$400,000 (S$516,500) Super Series tournament.

Ranked 31st in the world, Chrisnanta and Neo began poorly against their World No 9 opponents, who won the Bitburger Open in Germany two months ago for their first international title.

Team manager Chua Yong Joo attributes the Singapore pair's slow start to their lack of experience at this level of competition.

"This was Danny and Vanessa's first quarter-final match at a Super Series tournament and they didn't get into gear fast enough and were affected by the noisy home supporters," said Chua.

"Things got better in the second game and you could see them gaining confidence, and it was a shame to lose the rubber game which could have gone either way."

Twice at the closing stages of the rubber game, Chrisnanto gave away the advantage cheaply with service faults, and the 23-year-old told Today that he was guilty of hurrying his serve.

"I wanted to win badly and wanted to get the winning point quickly, I'm disappointed because this was a very good opportunity for me and Vanessa to take a step further in Super Series tournaments," Chrisnanta said.

"Vanessa and I have combined well in the one year that we've played together, and this result will encourage us to train harder for competitions in the future."

The next assignment for the Republic's shuttlers will be the Thomas and Uber Cup Asian zone qualifiers in Macau next month (Feb 13-19).

Yes, totally agree.. Chrisnanto was too nervous towards the end of the 3rd set. And the Mas pair got full support from the fans in the stadium.
