..hmm, 1st and 2nd photos are barely different esp. after going up in ISO (i take it it's ISO3200 not 3000)?..is the hall really lacking in lighting?..

..well, that Wellington hall seems already **more** than lacking in lighting even at 3200; Auckland/North Harbour hall looks bright enough even with ISO400..perhaps the lens' aperture plays into factor??..

f/3.5 is tough.

TBH, if you are shooting f/3.5 at 18mm, f/4 at 70mm isn't that much difference.

just crank up the ISO and forget about the noise. noise is really very secondary to shutter speed. ISO6400/12800. just got for it.

18mm seems a bit wide even with 1.5x/1.6x. i suggest people start with longer focal length, 70mm is ok to start with. try framing closely first, get the feel and timing right and then go wide from there.

of course, getting a 50mm/1.4 (or 1.8) is a much better choice. my friend just got a 50/1.8G and it works really well.

the other more economical lens for badminton from Nikon would be the 35/1.8G. around US$200 which is also a bargain.

Badmintoncentral is my little shoulder-devil telling me to get stuff. I am rather glad that there is no cycling sub-forum here, otherwise I might be tempted to get a carbon helmet or some crap.

In the last few weeks, I learned that the telephoto lens is rather useless for me. I'm not a bird-watcher.
The the basic 18-55mm lens does a good job for most occasions, but I am now wanting brighter images with more bokeh.

I told my parents that I wanted a dslr to take pics of the models I have to make for my assignments, but it turned out that I needed a macro lens for that, and my Samsung Galaxy S' camera does a better job than my DSLR with both lenses at that.

I plan to sell my telephoto lens already, to get an AF-S 35mm F/1.8 or an AF-S 50mm F/1.8 instead, from Amazon (are there cheaper shops to buy from?).. and at the same time, I will try to sell out my Apacs racquets to purchase another TC700 for badminton ..

I know that skills are more important than the equipment, but I would still prefer to get rid of my bird-watching lens for a fast bright lens. I will probably do that later, after I keep playing with my 18-55...

Right now, I'm looking at the Nikon D5100 as an option for long-term use, possibly using it with a tamron 18-200mm lens (because it's cheaper than the nikon ones..) and a 90/100mm macro lens for photographing my models. Good combination for my purposes? Some better things you can recommend?

The D5100 lacking a built-in AF motor is also a pain.. AF-S lenses are so much more expensive than the older AF lenses

Just updating.. I got myself a 50mm F/1.8 for just.. 19usd. (a working one, of course)..

Will test it out tonight or in a few days on court and i'll update with results..
