There's a big chance for Fransiska Ratnasari to win a title. Maria Kristin Yulianti can also win some matches here and progress to SF hopefully. At WR144, she really needs some victory to propel her to the top 100 at least.
Out of interest anyone know why it is called "White Nights" ? I saw someone called Kim Jong Bruun in the draw, it took me a few minutes to work out who he was
It's called White Nights because it doesn't get dark at night in the summer in St.Petersbrug . Gatchina being very close, same area ... Funny this is arguably a stronger field than the Russian Open GP , but of course the plain ticket is significantly cheaper than going to Vladivostok. Well ... let me take that back As I scroll down the seedings ...
It eerily reminds me of the massive Tunguska explosion, where a newspaper could be read at midnight in places as faraway as Britain
Eerily eh . It is nothing more than midnight summer sun. I guess the effect wouldn't be as spectacular in this area as some closer to the arctic but I guess this sure illustrates some of those white nights http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2011/06/05/travel/20110605-COVER-2.html
I stated to respond too early.. Didn't read the last line .. Given that the team from Japan and China is missing in white nights the tournament is considerably weaker than the russian GP. Cheers, T
Yes the best of the field was better at Russian GP but the rest of the participants were just fillers from Russia and North Korea; the depth of the field at White Nights was looking better untill I got to the doubles ...
I think you guys are right in terms of the quality of the field in terms of singles. At Russia GP, there was 3-4 top class singles players, in each draw, whereas in WN, there is 6-7 very good singles players, however none of them are really good enough to challenge the Russian GP finalists.Probably though, WN will be more entertaining from a spectators point of view, because although there are no really big name competing, there are several players in the draw who are very evenly matched, therefore the games will not be one sided and predictable.
Yup, much better chance than last week RUS GP when some JPN & CHN shuttlers took part. Let's see how their outcome here...
Nana and Maria Kristin are in the quarterfinals... I feel pretty confident they will both go to the SF.
I expect Maria Kristin Yulianti and Fransiska Ratnasari to face each other in the Final. Maria Kristin's ranking will go up to at least top 100 by next week. Not a bad progress.
Andre Kurniawan Tedjono just won his 3rd match here in Gatchina, after beating Vladimir Ivanov in 3-sets: 16-21, 21-17, 22-20. What a nervy ending to the third-set. Up next will be Robin Gonansa. I hope Andre can go far! He has much better luck in European IC tourneys.
I believe all Ina players will thru to sF, the only pair who maybe won't get tru are Rendra/Rian who'll face 1st seed Logosz/Cwalina...
Logosz-Cwalina might not look forward to facing Rian-Rendra either... Our RR pair can very well beat them too.....
