Liem Swie King
Can you please tell me the English name of a former Indonesian player? His Chinese name (based on Cantonese pronounciation) is "Lam Sui Gang", and I think he played in the early to mid 80's.
Liem Swie King
Thank you very much, but doesn't Liem Swie King also have an English Name based on Indonesian translation? (just as Ng Chung Ming's English name based on Indonesian name is Tony Gunawan, Chan Kap Liang's English name based on Indonesian translation is Candra Wijaya)Originally posted by nauknip

Ethnic chinese in Indonesia used to have their chinese
names as their Indonesian names also.
I read an newspaper long time ago that Chinese are not allowed to use Chinese names in Indonesia. Liem was one of the few that can use his Chinese names because of his success in badminton and was kind of a super hero. Is that true?
What about Eng Hian?
Qidong, this is not true. The ethnic Chinese were still allowed to legallyOriginally posted by Qidong

keep and use their chinese names, but after the anti-chinese revolution in
Indonesia in 1965, many chinese felt disadvantaged with having readily
recognizable chinese names due to various social, safety, business, and
educational concerns, so most of them chose to use Indonesian names.
As far as a law banning having Chinese names, that was not true, only
laws banning using the Chinese language and writing in public.
Some Chinese-Indonesians decided to use their Chinese names despite
these difficulties and examples of them include Liem Swie King and
Eng Hian, as Tezta mentioned. It is not because of badminton stardom that
allowed them to do this, but by their own choice.
I see. Thanks for clearing things out.
