I am glad that so many people have began to debate about Misbun Sidek but sadly not many B'cers are giving us insight as to the style of play of the man himself and except for one or two who provided us with witness account of his playing days.

Whether he was a great player ?, I guess one has to ask Han Jian, Yang Yang, Icuk, Prakash P, Morten and Liem Swee King about Misbun.

No need to ask them. Just have a look of his career achievements. Thats enough.

U cant be a great player if u do not have sparkling results.:D

If Misbun Sidek was a great player at his time. The others, as mentioned above would have be a superb player.

He was a great player. A great player than had never won any major championships at his playing time.

Dont think so, boss. Kinda hard for me to see Misbun in the company of Eddy Choong, Wong Peng Soon, Tan Aik Huang & gang.

I will settle for; 'Misbun Sidek was a Malaysian badminton champion'.

And boss, on the side note, I would like to make a recommendation on someone for your kind consideration as a potential mod.

Um, the worthies you mention were Malaysia's greatest players.
In that light, Misbun would be one of Malaysia's great players, wouldn't he? :)

PS: About the 'side note', let me say my sarcasm well has run dry ;)

When did Misbun ever was World championship runner-up?

I'm 41 and was a great badminton fan since the 80s. If anyone says Pemuda was too young to watch Misbun play then I have every right to comment because i watched him played many times until the end of his career. Even when TV didn't show the match, I never failed to read the sport column to see tournament results.

    >MISBUN SIDEK
    >- World Championship Runner-up 1982, 1988

hahaha! World Championship was not even held in 82 or 88. How then Misbun be runner-up??? This is a big laugh!

The world championship was held in 1977, 1980, 1983 and since then every two years.
Misbun's best world championship achievement was 1983 where he reached the semis. All subsequent world championship he did poorly and never failed to disappoint me. In fact, I don't recall any other tournament did he make me proud. Even in his so-called official blog that he was 1986 Malaysian Open champion was untrue! The champion was Zhao Jian Hua. I followed the tournament very closely while I was in form 3. Zhao was unseeded in that tourney but he gunned down Icuk, Foo Kok Keong and ultimately Misbun.

    As for
    >- Thomas Cup 2nd Runner-up 1988
Well, Misbun didn't contribute much in Thomas cup 88. Much of the contribution for reaching the final was from Rashid, Razif-Jalani and Cheah Soon Kit/Ong beng teong. Misbun lost in encounter with Indonesia and China. I still remember in the final against Yang Yang, Misbun lost 15-2 15-2.

The commentator may say Misbun was great player himself but facts are stronger than words.

Now the question of whether Misbun was a great player. Could a great player never won any major title? You judge for yourself....
