Not bad:D this is how my coach taught me one aspect of defense too. It's quite effective.

    Nice defense video!

Please do post a video of a game when you can - but no rush :).

    - Your technique is the normal , racket out in front of you.

I have also been currently using a technique , where the racket is facing downards , with the face of the racket , facing the net and with a backhand grip.

I want to compare these two stances and see the difference.

I use that technique also, generally because it's easier to defend with the backhand (even on the forehand until a particular point).

Hmm , yes it is a small technique which only a few people know.

Your are right with the statement about the backhandside.

May I ask , whot taught you it ?

Also how did you find it comparing it to the "generic" technique?

No-one taught me it, just picked it up as a habit when my coach told me it was it easier to defend on the forehand side by stepping in to it and picking it up with my backhand.

Using that technique I've found that if a smash was coming directly to my right hip, I couldnt do a thing about it ! :( Luckily no one knows about that at my club :p

Please do not analyse too much my defense... it's one of the worst aspects of my game. Generally speaking it is technically good, but against big smashers it's not that good.

I would have preferred a video of a game or my backhand

That technique , helps at your right hip.

Assuming your right handed , you just quickly raise your racket up to your hip.

This is why it is deemed to be "better" than the forehand defense.

Yet I am still comparing both these techniques.

Backhand much easier. It's also easier to defend the forehand with the backhand until your arm/elbow straightens out

Showing off my newly acquired skills :D
Not perfect, but I hope it'll get better as time passes.

I never had one on one coaching and the guy who used to coach us never really taught us " The Backhand ! " . I try slowing down videos of some good players including my coach and try to learn the same. Only problem I'm facing now, is that my backhand is not consistent, in clears. There are times when the shuttle soars high and reaches the rear court but almost 60 % of the time I end up hitting the shuttle late.... which pretty much ends up in " you know what ! " ... :D

Yeah - although it takes time to adjust to stop using your forehand for the shots you are able to do with backhand.

I think this technique really does make my life easier in doubles.

    Nice backhand.

I want to develop mine - it is so fun having a good backhand , although it will make me a lot lazier:eek:.

    VERY TRUE ! ! !
It made me very lazy to go around to even TRY a forehand.

    ok firstly
    that backhand clear was GORGEOUS!!

secondly, that lil kid in red yonex shirt is serious TALENT. clearly he's been trained and coached well. technique, shot selection and instinct all there at such a young age. smashing with so little margin given his height is pretty amazing

I like the BH smash; it shows mere mortals can develop a BH smash that's useful in tournaments. Placement is more important for BH smash as it will be slower than FH smash.

Not to be mean, but most of his backhand smashes are unnecessary from his position. He could easily/should use his forehand to play a better shoot.

Andy-->>He the coach from Indonesia Who is Friend with Taufik and his backhand is taught by Taufik. Therefore, he loves showing off his great back hand. Trust me, his back hand is as strong as his forehand. Compare him to Taufik's backhand, Andy backhand is as superior as Taufik. You need to witness Andy's backhand in person to see how his amazing backhand skill.
