Wee Kiong prepared to go the extra mile to learn from top pair in Bath

The 21-year-old Wee Kiong said that he was looking forward to the stint offering golden opportunities to spar with their more illustrious seniors.

Wee Kiong-Hee Chun have not trained together with Kien Keat-Boon Heong at the national training camp since coming under the charge of coach Tan Kim Her in February. They only get matchplay, once or twice a week.

Wee Kiong said that he considered the chance to spar with them as a “life-time experience”.
“It is a privilege for us to be used as sparring partners for Koo and Tan. This exercise will benefit us. We hope to learn as much as possible from them,” said Wee Kiong before leaving with the team for London yesterday.

Wee Kiong and Hee Chun are seen as the pair to take over from Kien Keat-Boon Heong as the country’s No. 1.

They did well to reach the semi-finals of the Malaysian Open Grand Prix Gold in Johor Baru last month by beating Kien Keat-Boon Heong.

“We went on to win the Kedah Open title, which was our first title as a pair. We also took part in the recent Macau and Taiwan Opens.

“It has been hectic but we are certainly growing as a better pair in every tournament. We are now ranked 45th in the world and we hope to break into the top 16 by end of the year,” said Wee Kiong.

Top 16? Abit too ambitious if you ask me... unless they get the same chances as Fuzzy... Next year they can though.
    Good luck Mak/TWK! :D

Hee Chun-Wee Kiong can secure Asiad spot with good show in China

    By LIM TEIK HUAT

PETALING JAYA: National back-up pair Mak Hee Chun-Tan Wee Kiong have tough hurdles to clear in the main draw of the China Masters, which begins in Changzhou today.
Hee Chun-Wee Kiong, who bagged the Johor Open title in July, have to beat South Korean fourth seeds Ko Sung-hyun-Yoo Yeon-seong to avoid an early round exit in the first Super Series tournament since the World Championships in Paris last month.
But the pair, who now train under Tan Kim Her, should have nothing to fear.
An upset win against the Swiss Open champions could earn them a place alongside world No. 1 Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong for the Guangzhou Asian Games in November.
World Championships silver medallists Kien Keat-Boon Heong are assured of a place but the second doubles slot is still open.
[IMG] Tough hurdle: Mak Hee Chun (left) and Tan Wee Kiong will face Swiss Open champions Ko Sung-hyun-Yoo Yeon-seong of South Korea in the opening round of the China Masters today.
Doubles head coach Rexy Mainaky is looking at either Hee Chun-Wee Kiong or the newly paired up combination of Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Hoon Thien How to complete the men’s doubles line-up for Guangzhou.
However, Zakry-Thien How have only entered for the Japan Open next week and the advantage is clearly on Hee Chun-Wee Kiong as they will also be playing in Tokyo.
With world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei skipping the China Masters to recuperate from a back injury before the New Delhi Commonwealth Games next month, Malaysia’s interest in the China Masters lies in the men’s doubles.
Four national back-up pairs and three independent pairs will be on court today.
Former national pairs Chan Chong Ming-Chew Choon Eng and Gan Teik Chai-Tan Bin Shen are up against Korean pairs in the opening round. Chan Peng Soon-Lim Khim Wah too will be facing a Korean pair in the first round.
Goh Wei Shem-Teo Kok Siang and former national No. 1 Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah will take on Japanese pairs Rei Sato-Keigo Sonoda and Shohei Hoshino-Akira Kobayashi respectively.
The newly-formed pair of Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Ong Soon Hock have perhaps the toughest opening round hurdle as they will be up against World Championships semi-finalists and second seeds Guo Zhengdong-Chen Xu of China.
It will also be a good test ahead of the Commonwealth Games for doubles specialist Chin Eei Hui, who is partnering Goh Liu Ying in the women’s doubles for the first time.
Eei Hui’s regular partner Wong Pei Tty has been ruled out of the Commonwealth Games and the Asiad so as to allow her to recover fully from a career threatening knee injury.
Eei Hui-Liu Ying have a first round match against China’s Nan Qiao-Wu Qianqian.
There will be interesting first round match-ups for the top three Chinese men’s singles shuttlers – world champion Chen Jin, Lin Dan and Bao Chunlai – as they are all up against Korean opponents.
The match between Lin Dan and Park Sung-hwan takes top billing with the Olympic champion from China looking to avenge an unexpected quarter-final defeat by the Korean at the world meet in Paris last month.
Third seed Chen Jin faces Hong Ji-hoon while Bao Chunlai has a similarly tricky match against Shon Wan-ho.

    FULL SUPPORT FOR MAK/TAN SOON.

Shuttlers Hee Chun-Wee Kiong get biggest break in their careers
    By RAJES PAUL
PETALING JAYA: Youngsters Mak Hee Chun-Tan Wee Kiong have been given the biggest break in their badminton careers.
The aspiring doubles shuttlers have been named in the Asian Games squad together with defending champions Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong for the challenging mission of winning glory for the country at Guangzhou, China, from Nov 12-27.
And hopes are high on the youngsters to emulate their more illustrious seniors, Kien Keat-Boon Heong, to pull off the unexpected in their maiden Asiad appearance.
Four years ago, Kien Keat-Boon Heong were not given a ghost of a chance when they made their debut at the Asiad in Doha but they stunned everyone to end the country’s 36-year wait for a gold medal.
[IMG] Rising stars: Mak Hee Chun (left) and Tan Wee Kiong upset world No. 1 Koo Kien Keat- Tan Boon Heong in the Malaysian Grand Prix Gold in July
That breakthrough win propelled Kien Keat-Boon Heong into an unbeaten run for almost six months and the duo, who are currently the world No. 1 and World Championships silver medallists, are the most successful pair in the country.
National doubles back-up squad coach Tan Kim Her is hoping that Hee Chun-Wee Kiong will take their chances well in Guangzhou.
“We have submitted Hee Chun-Wee Kiong’s names for the Asian Games. During selection, they were in their best form and showed great potential,” said Kim Her in a telephone interview from China.
“It is unfortunate that they (Mak and Tan) did not go far in the ongoing China Masters in Changzhou. But we hope that this is just a minor setback and they will bounce back quickly.”
At the China Masters, Hee Chun-Wee Kiong went down 16-21, 9-21 to fourth seeds Ko Sung-hyun-Yoo Yeon-seong of South Korea in the opening round on Wednesday.
The inclusion of Hee Chun-Wee Kiong, ahead of two other seasoned campaigners – Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Hoon Thien How and Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Ong Soon Hock – is mainly due to their impressive feat of beating Kien Keat-Boon Heong for the first time en route to reaching the semi-finals of the Malaysian Open Grand Prix Gold in Johor Baru in July.
The duo do seem to fear no one but their weakness is their inability to maintain quality performances consistently. This, however, can be improved with constant drilling during training sessions.
Besides, based on the world rankings, the duo are the top ranked back-up shuttlers under the guidance of Kim Her.
They are in 47th spot, followed by Chan Peng Soon-Lim Khim Wah (54th) and Teo Kok Siang-Goh Wei Shem (77th).
The other pairs in Kim Her’s squad are world junior champions Ow Yao Han-Yew Hong Kheng, Chooi Kah Ming-Pang Zheng Lin and Tan Wee Tat-Goh Sze Onn.
Meanwhile, Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) secretary Ng Chin Chai said: “The coaches have submitted their names and now we have to get the BAM to endorse them. It will be done at the next council meeting on Friday.”
Besides Kien Keat-Boon Heong and Hee Chun-Wee Kiong, the others in the men’s nine-member squad are Chan Peng Soon and singles shuttlers Lee Chong Wei, Mohd Hafiz Hashim, Chan Kwong Beng and Liew Daren.

They are not like Koo/Tan, not as talented, won't rise as fast, and none of them are experienced in big matches ;)
But then, although I am happy that they are selected, they should try to fight hard against Ko/Yoo later. They must know that if they are the 2nd MD, they must be up to the task to go up against strong opponents like Ko/Yoo. Might not be ready for the task but at least they gain some exposure and experience.
Hope they prove that they are chosen on merit... :( Recently not good form

Should be better than China Master..........because KSH/YYS have to play untill final against Cai/Fu........
so there will be a 'tired' factor for KSH/YYS, but Mak/Tan who lost in 1st round and relaxing untill Jap Open next week.....very fresh!

So, hope Mak/Tan can grab this oppotunity and dont disappoint their fans anymore.....
