I personally think he's going to be better than Simon and he's only 18 this year.

This kid is talented, and his Dad is the former World Champ. He didn't get good opportunities before, but it seems like he is now. I agree that he would be better than Simon, and could become the third Indo single player soon, or even second.

    Hmm..if some of you recall..

..actually, he did a "semi-Taufik" also not too long ago, when he announced that he was leaving Pelatnas; *his* main reason:to continue his study abroad (if not mistaken early this yr or late last yr, correct me if i'm wrong)....But almost like deja vu again, as is almost typical for PBSI, not til a few months later, after the defeat of the Pelatnas team @ Thomas/Uber Cup that a report broke out which mentioned PBSI was going to "save face" and re-called Tommy to come back....So here he is now, back again.. :p ;)

Has anyone seen him play? How's his playing style? Does he play like his Dad (i.e., a very defensive style)?

    he..he i think you're wrong :)

first time tommy sugiarto joined PBSI when his father, icuk sugiarto became PBSI Official. there was a rumor , becos of his dad's interference he could join pelatnas (tommy was not a national junior champion (if not mistaken)), icuk 'khabarnya pilih kasih' to sent tommy to some tournaments, Icuk couldn't 'stand' it and became 'angry', he told tommy to leave pelatnas immediately

    Hmm...

..hehe, was that the first time??..  :p ..If yes, then thanks for correcting/sharing it..;)
anyways, in either case(s), Tommy (and his dad) "threatened" and actually left Pelatnas. The example i mentioned was the most recent one(i believe there's an actual news report on this, but it'll take me a while to dig thru it)..;)

Interesting note which he mentioned one of his target is to win the AE title(the other the World Championship), as that's the only title which his father never accomplished.

    And in a related article...

...this is also an interesting developing story on Icuk. According to the article, looks like he is now willing to mend and resolve his differences with Mr. Sutiyoso(PBSI's Chairman). Icuk also mentioned that he wants PBSI/Pelatnas to take care of his son.
Again, anyone willing to help us with the translation is much appreciated-thanks again:cool:

Icuk Akhiri Konflik dengan PB PBSI
    Written by Antara News
    Friday, 22 December 2006

XIII ASEAN University Games at Hanoi, Vietnam, 16-22 December
    Tommy Sugiarto Champion
    By admin

Indonesian future badminton star, Tommy Sugiarto, again scored highest achievement in the international arena winning the ASEAN University Games, defeating his country man Alamsyah in straight games 21-15, 24-22, Friday (22/12), in Vietnam.

The title was the third won by the son 1983 World Champion Icuk Sugiarto in the international events. Tommy has previously won two senior satellite tournaments.

In the first round, Tommy defeated a Brunaian player easily. Next, he also dashed the host's last hope in the quarter final. And in the semifinal he trashed a Thai player without much resistance and meeting his country man Alamsyah in the final.

"So happy to be champion yet again," said Tommy who failed inn the final of 2006 Junior World Championships due to "match mishandling" by the South Korean host. "Hopefully this would motivate me to achieve better next year," continued Tommy.

Tommy's achievement which was now ranked 16 in the world ranking, has made him the only Indonesian junior player that successfully attainded outstanding achievement in the year 2006. It was without any doubt that the Indonesian Badminton Association decided to maintain the potential star to be trained to be more mature in the national training centre at Cipayung.

"In the first set I'm already familiar with Alamsyah's game, I directly inflict pressure with attacking rallies," admitted Tommy. "But in the second set, I have to work harder due to lack of focus before winning in duece, " added Tommy.

When asked about his greatest ambition, Tommy said that he wanted to be like his father Icuk Sugiarto who could be a world champion. Not only that, he also wanted to win the oldest badminton championship All England - the tournament that his father failed to win.

Icuk to end conflict with Indonesian Badminton Association
    Written by Antara News
    Translated by babonimut

"...I also want my son Tommy be looked after..."
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Former Indonesian Badminton Association Jakarta District Chief Icuk Sugiarto stated his intention to end conflicts with the Indonesian Badminton Association Chief Sutiyoso to maintain the integrity and unity of badminton community in Indonesia.

"Today I have decided to end the problems I encountered with the Indonesian Badminton Association in relation to my critisms towards the productivity of the Indonesian Badminton Association officials which resulted in the 24-month sentense to me," said Icuk at Jakarta, Thursday.

The 1983 world champion who was well known to its critisms towards Sutiyoso's leadership, has just recently been discharged from duty for two years as the Indonesian Badminton Association Jakarta District Chief.

In his official statement, Icuk maintained that he has tried to self restrain by not extending conflicts that could destroy national badminton which he has regarded as his own house.

"Let me leave the house where I was groomed as long as the house remains intact and let it be magnificent memory because I carved with golden ink by winning the world championship," said Icuk who was still trusted as the special envoy of Minister of National Youth and Sports Adhyaksa Dault.

In parallel to his intention to end the conflicts, as its consequenses, Icuk would not want to involve himself in the badminton world, be it in the organisation and in the programme run by the Indonesian Badminton Association.

"At this opportunity, I also wish my son Tommy Soegiarto be looked after. Don't let him become a victim just like me," said he.

Tommy in the mean time was one of the national training centre members and was projected to replace his seniors like Taufik Hidayat, Sonny Dwi Kuncoro and Simon Santoso.

Tommy was still 16 years of age, has a potential as future athlete and has demonstrated achievement as a finalist in the World Junior Championship at Incheon, South Korea moments ago.

"I hope my problem do not spread to other district officials, but I would like to encourage them to help the productivity of Mr.Sutiyoso's leadership," added he.(*)

    he's great

i actually know this guy since we were in the same club (Pelita Bakrie).. back then like 5 years ago or so lol.. he was and still is a great player!! =) he's such a discipline, and determined player! he played double and single really well =)

i remember when he played double on the final match, his partner (another friend of mine lol) got injured, but they decided to keep playing. that was like a game of 2 vs. 1! it was crazy.. u guys have no idea how tommy strived for the shuttlecock left to right, back to front.. and i still dont get it how the heck he could manage to strike back... and yes, they actually won the title =) it was "kejuaraan bulutangkis jakarta barat" (i forgot the year)

and now, he's one of the greatest indonesian badminton players =) i hope he can make it to the world champion in the next few years =P i do believe he can...

(btw i read the news when he got defeated by lin dan with 21-12, 21-19 in germany open? correct me if im wrong coz i havent gotten a chance to keep up with badminton news lately =( but that score is awesome for such a second-line player =P man, it's lin dan! lol )
