Well done! Very well done Wong Mew Choo. Now, I hope the Malaysian public wont go overboard with the praises. Let the girl concentrate on the coming HK Open. She still has a long long way to go. Tone down on the Malaysia Boleh chest thumping ok?
WMC in ABC 2004 I was at the Asian Badminton Championships 2004 in KLBA, Cheras. Seated behind me was WCM, a slight figure who was chatting animatedly with her friends and some family members. She was Malaysia's champion, popular, but was reported to be prone to injuries which had stymied her improvement. Yesterday I saw a vastly different WMC on TV during her battle with XXF in the China Open final. WMC is decidedly fitter, stronger and more determined. Her 'soft' stlye was not much different from before and she could still arch incredibly backwards to excute her delightful overhead smash to her backhand. But her arsenal of strokes has increased and her shot making has improved. I think XXF must be amazed by her dexterity and never-say-die approach. WMC's "Malaysia Boleh" attitude simply soured XXF's winning appetite which was apparent when XXF came back strongly during the second game to give WMC a drubbing of only 8 points! Even in the decider, XXF was much ahead before the interval I think. But WMC never gave up and returned many impossible shots from XXF to prolong the game and took the wind out of XXF in the end for an historic win over an hour! But WMC must not rest on her laurels now that she has beaten so many talented China players in just one SS. You can be sure that LYB and his panel of coaches will not take the loss lying down. They will study every move by WMC much more now than before. Mew Choo's hitherto unheralded coach, Wong Tat Meng, may need an assistant to help him counter the China strategy! Here's a picture of WMC being interviewed during the ABC 2004 in KL:
Great... I managed to rewatch the final match between XXF & WMC. In the decider, XXF rushed to an 8-3 lead and was leading 11-7 during the mid-game interval. XXF continued her lead 13-10 before WMC fought back to level 13-13. XXF took the next point but WMC levelled it 14-14. XXF grabbed the next 2 points after long rallies to put herself back in the driver's seat 16-14. Amazingly, WMC took 6 straight points to reach the match point 20-16. The exhausted XXF only managed to score another point before WMC clinched the winning point to seal the victory when XXF's crosscourt return went wide. WMC was jumping in joy and WTM stood up from his seat and applauded for her. I almost cried yesterday.
Hahha.. i know how u feel... i also almost cried... i was so happy for her. Her parents and sister was so estatic over the win.
I think most Malaysians are very happy for her. It's been so long since Sylvia, so WCM is really the only good WS player most of the younger generation of Malaysians has ever known. And to think that she beat so many excellent chinese WS players along the way is just really wonderful. It shows that perseverance pays. Syabas! Malaysia Boleh!
Well pemuda, i hope u wont give all this "big headed", "flash in the pan" comment on the girl on her future loses. We r still lucky to hv her regardless whether she will repeat the same feat or not
Well, you should have read my earlier postings about WMC before you make your comments. I rate WMC for her work ethics. Tehnique wise, I think she is pretty average but in terms of hard work she is top class. Before the likes of you go "we are lucky to have her" and etc etc, hold the over the board compliments as we dont want to see another of our shuttler losing focus.
