Jiangsu wins men's badminton team tourney final berth at National Games

    www.chinaview.cn [IMG] 2009-10-11 20:52:50 [IMG][IMG] [IMG][IMG] Print
QINGDAO, East China, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- The first final berth of men's badminton team tournament went to Jiangsu at the 11th National Games here on Sunday.
Jiangsu, men's team defending champion, meeting almost no challenge from Guangdong, runner-up at last Games, wrapped up the victory of 3-0.
Li Yu of Jiangsu defeated Wang Zhengming of Guangdong in two straight sets 21-14, 21-15.
"Though Wang is younger than me, I still tried to challenge him no matter physically or mentally." Li explained his win.
First doubles match between Cai Yun-Xu Chen and Fu Haifeng-Zhu Lihua was highlighted as Cai and Fu are a golden pair in the Chinese national team. The duo ended the drought in 2006 that China has never won a men's doubles world title since 1989 and lifted the title again in 2009.
The fist set proved to be a tough one as Cai and Xu notched up the game 21-19. However in the second, Cai and Xu led the way and never looked back to secure a 21-12 victory, putting Jiangsu 2-0 ahead.
"I am so familiar with Fu. Whoever will win depends on his form," said Cai." Since Fu, Xu and I are all national shuttlers, our strategy is to play against Zhu. We won the first set thanks to some good luck but in the second, we are better in terms of overall strength."
Xu added: "Fu is good at backcourt play so we tried to play a frontcourt match and dominate the net."
Fu was satisfied with their performance. "I thought Zhu and I cannot cooperate well but actually we did a good job. Cai and Xu are clearly better than us so we just tried to play our best."
Chen Jin, world No. 4, wrapped up Jiangsu's 3-0 victory by frustrating Zhu Pengxiang 21-15, 21-15.
"I had no pressure as we have won the first two matches," said Chen. "We might meet Fujian in the final. We have to make solid preparation for that as they are balanced both in singles and doubles."

Hubei wins last berth of women's badminton semifinals at National Games

QINGDAO, East China, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- Hubei beat Zhejiang to win the last berth of semifinals of women's badminton team event at the China's 11th National Games here on Saturday.

The other berths went to Guangdong, Hunan and Jiangsu.

After two losses in first singles and first doubles matches, Zhejiang was put on the cliff as another loss meant they cannot reach the semis. Then current women's singles world No. 1 Wang Lin defeated Chen to earn one point for Zhejiang. However, former world champion Gao Ling and Wei Yili dashed the hopes of Zhejiang by pipping Li Xiao and Shen Xiaobo, helping Hubei to the victory of 3-1.

"As our doubles cannot challenge Hubei, three singles players are under great pressure," Wang explained their loss. Olympic runner-up Xie Xingfang outplayed Cheng Wen of Hunan 21-15, 21-13, putting Guangdong on the right track for the 3-0 victory.

"I have been taking up systematic training with Guangdong team," the 28-year-old veteran said. "We are working hard to play each match no matter how strong our rival is."

Apart from Xie, Guangdong also has Olympic women's doubles champions Yang Wei and Zhang Jiewen. They are eyeing for the team champion to better their second placing in last National Games.

Hosts Shandong notched up their first match by frustrating Fujian 3-2. Liu Jie, serving as Shandong's first singles player, said: "We played a better match than before."

Shanghai, who reserved big names like Wang Yihan and Zhu Lin, lost to Liaoning 3-0. Jiangsu, who has secured a semi berth, gave way to People's Liberation Army 3-0.

2009 China 11th National Games Results

    .
2cents, Thank you for the Results Updates.

It's a surprise that Jiangsu and Guangdong are so consistent in the Mens and Womens events most of the time (in getting into the semi-finals).

However, from what is observed, probably Fujian could win the Mens, and Guangdong the Womens.

Talking about the subject on top ranking Hong Kong women players in the world, it's because they are participating in more tournaments to earn their ranking points.

It is unfortunate that many good women players from various provinces of China couldn't get a chance to participate in more world tournaments to show their skills and to improve their world rankings. This problem is caused by them not being able to make it into the national team. Even those who could make it into the national team, they are restricted to participate in fewer tournaments.

It is hope that one day China would increase their team size/structure and allow more good provincial players to participate in more world tournaments. A good example to follow is: How Russian women players can dominate the top rankings in World Tennis.

why Fu Jian could win the Men's instead of Jiang Su? Jiang Su is stronger in both singles and doubles. All Fu Jian's singles have lost several times in this National Games, but Jiang Su's have been much more stable. Jiang Su's doubles are even much better than Fujian's too. By the way, Jiang Su is the reigning champion, and never underestimate the Champion.

For women's, Guang Dong seems stronger than Jiang Su in doubles, but Jiang Su is stronger in singles. And also Guang Dong has the same player as 4 years ago but not as strong as that time. All their best players: Xie XF, Yang Wei, Zhang JieWen, are half retired. They did not win 4 years ago at their peak time, how to manage to win this time.

    Totally agree.

Russian was not strong before, even their best ever before, Anna Kournikova has never won anything yet. It's Anna Kournikova's successful story that made millions of Russian girls purchasing their dreams in tennis. Also Anna's success in commercial made many sponsors investing money on those cute girls from Russian. Back to 10 years ago, there were also 5 or 6 Russians in top 25, but most of them ranked around 20th.

by the way, in the round robin, Fu Jian advanced to final by edging Guang Dong 3:2 in the last match in the group, if Fu Jian lost to Guang Dong, it would be eliminated from final 4.

On the other hand, Jiang Su has an easy 3:0 against Guang Dong in semifinal.

If this happens, the WS (or may be WD as well) WR would probably has a red sea from #1 to #10 at least (and all Chinese at quarter finals ;))... but you know people are already screaming about Chinese dominance and asking for limiting entries from a single country (particularly China)...

so you know this is not going to happen...:eek:

4 years ago, Xie XF was thought the best single while Zhang JW/Yang Wei the best doubles. But they won nothing in any event including team, singles, and doubles during last national games 4 years ago. Today, when people are not sure about their abilities, they have cruised to the final for the team event. Are they ready for the gold?

So far, Xie XF, Yang W, Zhang JW are awesome, Xie XF slaugtered Wang YH (the latest Japan Open title winner) 2:0 with the 2nd game score 21:8. Yang Wei/Zhang JW even gave Wang XL/Zhao YL a traning lesson on how to play. The tuition was the 0:2 lost in semi. I'm not joking. Yang Wei did teach Wang XL and Zhao YL how to play after easily winning the match. While Wang XL and Zhao YL have been regarded the strongest competitor for women's doubles, because they have won 3 national level titles, defeated Du Jin/Yu Yang twice and rarely lost any.

Here is the final lineup and my predictions:

WS1: Xie XF vs Lun Lan -- 50:50
    WD1: Yang W/Zhong QX vs Tang JH/Tan W -- 60:40
WS2: Xia JY vs Wang SX -- 10:90 -- should be one sided match
    WD2: Zhang JW/Yao GJ vs Sun XL/Cheng Su -- 50:50
WS3: Liu Jian vs Wang Rong -- 50:50

Guang Dong hopes to win 2 doubles and 1 singles. Jiang Su bets on winning 1 doubles, especially the Sun XL/Cheng Su.

Guang Dong should be happy about the singles line up. On doubles, they split Yang W/Zhang JW to make 2 strong doubles.

Things go exactly what I predicted! Wow :eek::eek: to myself.

    Actually, I wrote
Xie XF vs Lu Lan -- 49:51
    Zhang JW/Yao GJ vs Sun XL/Cheng Su -- 49:51

but changed to 50-50. I also predicted Jiang Su's win. That came true too.

Most people always underestimate Jiang Su. In China, when people talking about badminton, they always talking about Guang Dong and Fu Jian.

when Li YB were asked by journalist which provinces would grab badminton gold, Li YB said, of course Fu Jiang and Guang Dong. In fact, last national games, neither Fu Jiang nor Guang Dong won any gold.

after Jiang Su's winning, the head coach for Jiang Su said: People have to admit that Jiang Su is a power house in badminton.

Reality check: Jiang Su won the most gold from last national games overall, now it is also leading in the standing in gold. Jiang Su is a powerhouse in sports overall. In badminton, Jiang Su has won 4 consecutive team gold for last 4 national games which spans 16 years.

Jiang Su has produced super stars like Yang Yang, Zhao Jianhua, Ge Fei, Gu Jun, Sun Jun, Zhang Jun,... there is no other team from anywhere in the world coming close.

It was true that no one in Jiang Su knowing how to badminton back to 50 years ago. Yang Yang's parents were playing basketball, they wanted their son a basketball star, but Yang Yang could not grow taller after reaching 176cm which was not good enough for playing basketball professionally. Then he began to learn badminton, actually at the begining from books because none knew how to play. When Jiangsu released their 1st ever badminton players like Yang Yang, Zhao Jiang Hua, and Yang Qian Li from scratch, they stunned the whole world!

the Men's team gold should go to Jiang Su too. there is a huge distance between Jiang Su and Fu Jian.

Jiang Su has won all the matches easily against all the other teams, while Fu Jian, just barely survived from round robin.

Hope my prediction came true in the men's team event too.

Jiang Su is just simply too strong for Fu Jian.

Jiang Su defeated Fu Jian with 3:0

    Chen Jin 2:0 Cheng Long

Tao Jia Ming/Sun Jun Jie 2:0 Guo Zhen Dong/Liu Xiao Long

Qiu Yan Bo 2:1 Gong Wei Jie

Fu Jian sent all their best hopes already. Jiang Su won even without their top double ace Cai Yun / Xu Chen, and 2nd single Li Yu.

    Final standing:

    1) Jiang Su
    2) Fu Jian
    3) Guang Dong

Jiang Su, using Li Yu, Cai Yun/Xu Chen, Chen Jin, defeated Guang Dong(Wang Zhen Ming, Fu Hai Feng) 3:0

Jiang Su, then using others, Chen Jin, Tao Jia Ming/Sun Jun Jie, Qiu Yan Bo, defeated Fu Jiang (Chen Long, Guo ZD/Liu XL, Gong Wei Jie) 3:0 again.

This implies that even the silver team Fu Jian and bronze Guang Dong combined together with their best players. Jiang Su would easily defeat them 5:0.

4 national games gold in a row which covers 16 years long dominating!

    Jobs well done, Jiang Su!
