    Badminton: No strength in numbers
    By RAJES PAUL

KUALA LUMPUR: Rashid Sidek began with 14 singles players when he became chief coach of the Project 2010-2012 four years ago.

Now, only four – Tan Chun Seang, Chong Wei Feng, Liew Daren and Mohd Arif Abdul Latif – are seen as having the potential to qualify for the 2012 London Olympic Games.
The fate of six others – Lim Fang Yang, Vountus Indra Mawan, Chan Kwon Beng, Lok Chong Chieh, Zairul Hafiz Zainuddin and Loo Yik Siang – are hanging in balance.
They have not been impressive and are waiting for the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) to decide whether to give them a second chance.

Four other equally talented shuttlers – Lim Kenn, Chong Li Qun, Beryno Wong and Mohd Syafiq Jamaluddin – had dropped out along the way.

[IMG] Bright hope: Ching Wei Feng is among the four shuttlers seen as having the potential to qualify for the London Olympics in 2012.

Rashid is confident that Chun Seang, Wei Feng, Daren and Arif will be able to close the gap on the country’s No. 1 men’s singles shuttler Lee Chong Wei in the next four years.
“These players will be sent out more often. They have the potential to be the next Chong Wei,” said Rashid.

Two of them – Chun Seang and Arif – will be in action at next week’s Taiwan Open in Taipei and Rashid said he would be satisfied if the duo could pull off one or two upset wins.

“My players are quite inconsistent right now. One day, they play brilliantly and the next day I can hardly recognise the player on court. Though dumbfounded, I find it a challenge to help them become more consistent,” said Rashid.

Rashid also took a swipe at his former charges for being impatient.

“There is no short cut to success. It involves a lot of hard work and discipline. Sometimes, we do not see the results immediately. Players need to be patient,” he said.
“I am happy that the current lot are disciplined. They are punctual for training, though sometimes they can be quite playful.”

As for the men’s doubles department, Rashid is left with Chan Peng Soon, Mohd Razif Abdul Latif, Khoo Chung Chiat, Mohd Lutfi Khalid, Ong Jian Guo, Goh Wei Shem, Chow Pak Chuu and Poh Chai Boon.
Rosman Razak handles the doubles players.

The loss of the talented Chang Hun Pin of Penang has been a huge blow for the doubles department. Hun Pin had to give up the game because of kidney failure and now requires dialysis treatment.

The women’s singles squad also suffered a setback following Anita Raj Kaur’s decision to leave and pursue her studies overseas.

Rashid and Rosman are now left with Julia Wong, Lydia Cheah, Sanatasah Saniru, Amelia Anscelly, Nairul Suhaida Abdul Latif, Lim Yin Loo and Ng Paou Ling.

“It can be quite demoralising when some of the players leave after we have spent so much time and effort grooming them. But that is something I have learnt to accept. I am confident though that with regular exposure at a higher level, we will be able to produce world-beaters from this group of shuttlers,” said Rashid.

Really talented player can be coached/trained for World Badminton in lesser time

    .
I am sure that there will be newly found talented Malaysian players before the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Even though a 4 years period can be seen as a short time, a really talented player can be coached/trained for World Badminton in shorter time, IMHO. :):):)

I was in a rush lah... hehe.

Hopefully chang hun pin can recover back and be a national hero.

I think it's important to focus on quality.;) Like what china is doing, they have 3 solid singles players out of so many.

Same applies to doubles and ladies (this will always be a struggle, need to add more oil lah).;)

Oh. FYI, Ex-Malaysian Dixson won the singapore mens doubles open cheers today (Underdog partnering a Chinese). A good achievement considering that he is a singles specialist beating sparring partners for Singapore doubles mens team. Enroute, they beat the top seeds and 2 other better pairs. Wow... Bravo!;)

Rashid heaps praises on young Lydia, Roslin through to semis in Taipei

PETALING JAYA: National back-up shuttler Lydia Cheah received good reviews after booking a place in the semi-finals of the Taiwan Open women’s singles competition in Taipei yesterday.

The lanky Lydia toiled to beat Mayu Sekiya of Japan 21-18, 17-21, 21-13 to set up a match today against Taiwanese Chiu Yi-ju for a place in the final.

Despite her hard-fought win, coach Rashid Sidek said that it was her best performance in the tournament thus far.

“She made too many unforced errors in the last two matches but today, she played a good game. She was more aggressive and confident,” said Rashid in a telephone interview from Taipei.

“I am quite satisfied with her performance today but I still rate her chances at 50-50 in the semi-finals tomorrow.”

Rashid’s scepticism over Lydia’s chances in the semi-finals is expected. After all, Lydia has often crashed, especially when expectations are high on her.
The other semi-final match is between Indonesian Pia Zebadiah Bernadet and Saina Nehwal of India.

In the men’s singles, Mohd Roslin Hashim marched into the semi-finals with a 21-19, 16-21, 21-12 win over China’s Chen Hong. He will take on Vietnamese Nguyen Tien Minh, who has a knack of pulling the rug from under the fancied players.

It was end of the road for KLRC Bhd’s Lee Tsuen Seng, going down 17-21, 15-21 to top seed Simon Santoso of Indonesia in the quarter-finals.

In the men’s doubles, Hoon Thien How-Ong Soon Hock and Mohd Razif Abdul Latif-Tan Wee Kiong continued to show impressive performances by checking into the semi-finals.

Said coach Jeremy Gan: “They believe in each other’s ability and they are so determined to do well.

“It is important to support each other and this is exactly what these pairs are doing. I hope they can continue with their good performances.”

Razif-Wee Kiong will take on top seeds Mathias Boe-Carsten Morgensen of Denmark today for a place in the final while Thien How-Soon Hock meet the second seeded Indonesian-American combination of Candra Wijaya-Tony Gunawan.

    Roslin leads way in Taiwan

    By K.M. Boopathy

    2008/09/13
VETERAN Roslin Hashim outplayed Chen Hong of China to lead the way as two Malaysian back-up pairs and women's singles Lydia Cheah all advanced to the semi-finals of the Taiwan Open yesterday. Roslin, the seventh seed, defeated former World No 1 Chen Hong 21-19, 16-21, 21-12 to reach his first semi-final in a grand prix event since 2006.

He now has the opportunity to take a step closer to winning the title as he will be meeting Vietnam's Nguyen Tien Minh who beat Indonesian Tommy Sugiarto 21-12, 21-7, in the last four today.

Young pair Razif Latif-Tan Wee Kiong, playing in only their third tournament as a pair, defeated Indonesia's Hendra Wijaya-Yoga Ukikasa 21-18, 21-16 in the quarter-finals.

Razif-Wee Kiong, who also reached the semi-finals of the Singapore Open in June, will take on top seeds Carsten Morgensen-Mathias Boe of Denmark today.

The hardworking Hoon Thien How-Ong Soon Hock, ranked World No 67, edged another Indonesian pair Hendra Gunawan-Joko Riyadi 17-21, 21-18, 26-24 to earn their berth in the last eight.

The result helped Thien How-Soon Hock set up a repeat of the Indonesia Open semi-final against Candra Wijaya-Tony Gunawan, which the Indonesian-American combination won, today.

Lydia defeated Mayu Sekiya of Japan 21-18,17-21, 21-13 to reach the semi-finals of a grand prix event for the first time in her career.

Coach Rashid Sidek, in a telephone interview from Taipei, said Roslin has good chance of advancing to the final.

"Lydia has done very well in this competition but she must continue battling.

"She has a 50-50 chance of reaching the final as her opponent Chiu Yi Ju (of Taiwan) is a steady player," said Rashid.

"Roslin, after beating Chen Hong, has a better chance against Nguyen."

KLRC Bhd's Lee Tsuen Seng found the going tough and fell 17-21, 15-21 to top seed Simon Santoso of Indonesia in the last eight. ...........................(results)...........
