interesting opinion, soulless. but if counted based on team, there would be only 3 stars to fullfil, Uber/Thomas, sudirman and OG. what are the 2 other stars stands for?
I think a small star maybe given if the athlete represent the country multiple times in a winning effort. So if China won sudirman twice in four years, the athlete may get two. The big star, like I said stand for recognition and more subjective. Now my theory is less precise then others posted here, but everyone of them so far have been falsified.
if we dontnknow the answer, some of the opinions might be correct. I agree the 5 stars are to do with the chinese flag in some way, and they relate to major champsmvictories.

No All England is important too but not as important as the other big majors..But to be recognised globally as a top player, you must win the All England. That is a mandatory achievement.. Wang Lin ,Wang Xin and Chen Long are the only existing Chinese players that have not won the All England which i believe they will in due time. However the win wont be attributed as a Star
Well from the Mainland Chinese perspective, winning All England is the stepping stone to achieving greater success on the international stage.. That's how Lin Dan, Wang Yihan, Wang Shixian, Li Xuerui gained their international fame after winning the all england but it wont be counted as a star
Well you be the judge. I go with the majority that feels winning All England is compulsory for every top player. It's a shame Zhang Ning who won the gold twice in Olympics never get the chance to win it. The Chinese women singles are too competitive at that time. As for Taufik, to be honest nobody really cares about him because he has been defeated too many times and achieved nothing since 2006. Cant blame people for thinking that way
Zhang Ning never achieved much success in major tournaments (World Championship for instance) but she did extremely well in SS and Grand Prix circuits throughout her career. Her Two time Olympic Gold Medals made up for her defeats in major tournaments like World Championships and All England.
Zhao Yunlei and Wang Yihan both need an Olympic gold to be on the same greatness height level as Lin Dan as both of these girls have achieved so many or too many success in SS and major tournaments lol imagine Lin Dan with two maidens standing next to him to be idolized as well for completing a Grand Slam
Yeah what i am saying is for her stature as a top class player, her performance in Worlds and All England championships never actually reflect her double OG gold medal status. She only achieved one success in the Worlds, other than that one, the rest are quite unexpected disappointing as she sometimes lets her teammates always get the best out of her
