    Is chasing ranking points so important?

    .
    In competition/tournament, Badminton is organised like other sports. Let's look at some of whom who are involved;

    For players, the winning of major titles is important. These titles reflect their authority/excellence.

    For fans, the appearance of their idols in tournaments is important. Fans just love to watch their idols play. It doesn't matter if the tournaments are major or not.

    For tournament organisers, their tournaments are usually annual events (major or not). If there are more skilled players participating, bigger attendances can be drawn.

    Ranking points are awarded to participating tournament players. BWF's ranking points system is similar to those of other sports. Non-participating players (injured, resting, or absent for any other reasons) will miss out on ranking points.

    Question: Is chasing ranking points so important?
    Answer: Think how we like. It's just part of how our World Sporting Bodies rank their players.

    Most Badminton players are National players, not independent professional players

    .
    As we all know, the problem is most of our Badminton players' activities depend on their National Associations' decision/jurisdiction.

    Currently, most Badminton players are National players, not independent professional players.

    Lin Dan withdrew from the 2009 Hong Kong Super Series Badminton Open

    .
    Yes, thought that Lin Dan would be taking over as World No.1 position soon. But it's not the case; Lin Dan withdrew from the 2009 Hong Kong Super Series Open, held this week, November 09-15.

    And so we are going back to Post #1:

    it's important for positioning the seeding in competitions... if your ranking is not good enough to be amongst the 8 seeds in a competition, you would end up meeting LD in Round 1 (like BCL in China Open) or Round 2 (like CL in China Open) and be outsted earliest possible even you are top 10 in the world... ;)

    .. maybe not, LD may never be WR#1 again, if he don't want to, and just anticipated in international competitions as selective, and as few as this year...

    As at the last BWF World Ranking (released on Thursday 19-Nov-2009)

    .
    As at the last BWF World Ranking List (released on Thursday 19-Nov-2009), we have;
    1. MAS[IMG][MAS] Chong Wei LEE ... 82,971.06 points
    2. CHN[IMG][CHN] Dan LIN .............. 71,344.58 points.

    LD still needs more than 10,000 points to catch up with LCW.

    i think ld knows how much less tournaments he entered and still at number 2, pretty good by any means. the big 4 are still consistently ranked year-in and year-out

    The 4 Heavenly Kings of Badminton

    .
    Yes, it's a surprise that LCW, LD, TH and PG could still remain as the 4 Heavenly Kings of Badminton after so many years. Credit to them FOUR.

    LD is still considered the "BEST" king because of his higher "win-lose ratio" whenever he plays. However, we should also give credit to LCW, TH and PG for participating in more tournaments; thereby entertaining us.

    i think LD has a chance to get it back next year seeing as LCW will be playing more selectively and less tournaments next year.

    watching the ssmf match lcw versus TH, i notice that lcw is playing a new style of badminton, adopted alot from LD's tactic. As someone has noted, lcw even modded his racket similar to LD.

    I think if LD wants to regain his #1 status, he could do it pretty much anytime in my opinion. I don't think its too important for him to be #1 as he usually plays the major tournaments.

    I also wondered if Lin Dan has a higher win ratio simply cos he conserves his energy by playing selectively in less tournaments cf LCW:) They are afterall humans and each player can only have a certain shelf life

    LD slow down after mid 2008. His winning ratio before that time, is quite good may i say
