    The Hendrawan Effect

It'd be sad, unfair and wrong to blame Sony's weaknesses on Hendrawan.

In his prime, Hendrawan was a supremely dignified sportsman, always on his best behaviour whether on court or off it (he still maintains that dignity). But he certainly had a champion's instinct... one that enabled him to wrest big titles from more gifted players.

In many ways, Hendra Setiawan's demeanour mirrors that of Hendrawan.
The overall calmness, the lightning pounces and the unfurrowed brow... on a closer look, it's clear that Setiawan is whatever Sony is not!

It's fascinating what Fidget and huangkwokhau say.
Sony has it... but, yet, doesn't have it!

from watching sony play over the past years it still does seem he has the game to trouble the top players....but agreed that killer instinct is lacking..personally id like to see him attack more :D

    Dear Oldhand
In post #79 I wasn't trying to say Sony suffers from bad coaching. Just that the one remaining skill Sony needs is an unteachable one because it is personality. No impugning of the revered Hendrawan was intended.

One other thing about that 'lack of killer instinct': Perhaps if you play badminton every day for endless hours for years and years.....perhaps it just gets boring. One rally is the same as another. Points/ games/ tourneys all just run together.
An intelligent, philosophical person might say to himself, why am I here when I could be fishing/ dancing/ studying molecular biology and generally becoming something more than a one-dimensional human being.
Maybe Sony's problem is that he suffers from deep thoughts.

he he, cos Setiawan is doubles player? Setiawan has his partner Markis Kido aka mighty mouse to nudge him if he loses any 'killer instinct'. wouldnt want to get into bad books with mighty mouse.:D

    Opposite of Taufik...

...whatever it is that's missing from Sony from reaching true greatness, i think it boils down to the what's going on in his mind..In a sense, his traits encapsulate the opposite of his compatriot, Taufik..

    Conratulations, SDK

Sony Dwi Kuncoro has finally made it to his dream podium - the winner's platform at the Indonesia Open

It's amazing that, for a player blessed with almost every required trait, Sony has won almost nothing remarkable in his six year career... until today

    His highest MS results are:

    Winner - Asian Championships 2002
    Winner - Asian Championships 2005
Winner - Chinese Taipei Grand Prix 2007
    Winner - Indonesia Open 2008

Obviously, this is his biggest win to date :)

PS: Runner-up at the WC 2007 is big too.
But that's not as good as Gold!

    If i may add..

..he also won the 2003 Asian Championships, as well as the MS Gold in the SEA Games in 2003 and 2005. But yes, this is his biggest individual tourney he has won, besides the Chinese Taipei Open last yr (which was only a Gold GP event, if i'm not mistaken).

He was also a bronze medallist in Athens 2004. Makes sense for him to be aiming for gold this time...

Sony is finally coming out of TH's shadows...bravo!!

May I ask those who saw the tournament, was there anything different about Sony that led to his success this time? Was he able to overcome the nerves that was evident in the Thomas Cup? Was he more consistently aggressive?

Earlier in this thread there was talk about Sony being too passive and how that may be impossible to change because it is a personality issue rather than a skill issue. However it would seem that Lee Chong Wei has changed his on court personality this year. At the Singapore open he seemed to pose and swagger a little. And he would look deadly serious and put-out if something didnt' go his way (which wasn't often).

Would anyone agree with this impression of LCW? And if so, is there sign of Sony showing more confidence too? If he lets just a little of his dark side out (aggression, ego) he'll be in good shape for the Olympics.
