Badminton: Chong Wei's next goal: Beat Lin Dan
    By : K.M. Boopathy
LEE Chong Wei must concentrate all his energy and skill on beating China's Olympic champion Lin Dan. This, as far as national singles coach Rashid Sidek is concerned, is the only way Chong Wei can stay ahead of the chasing pack and make a strong impact on major events.

Rashid, despite Chong Wei's 18-21, 21-10, 17-21 defeat to Peter Gade Christensen of Denmark in the Korea Open final on Sunday, regards the Malaysian World No 1 as better than the rest except for Lin Dan.

Lin Dan is the most complete player on the international circuit and in order to beat him, Rashid said Chong Wei must be strong physically and mentally.

"We are already seeing improvement in Chong Wei as it wouldn't have been possible for him to make a third consecutive final if he wasn't fit.

"He has pulled away from the rest of the elite players but Lin Dan is the exception. From now, Chong Wei must train to beat Lin Dan," said Rashid.

"Lin Dan is the most complete player in the world and is the benchmark for all men's singles shuttlers. If he (Chong Wei) can beat Lin Dan, he can beat anyone.

"However, it will not be easy as he needs to work harder and also remain focused all the time.

"The telling difference between Lin Dan and the rest is his unbelievable supremacy in major events and this is what Chong Wei should aim to attain.

"Chong Wei has beaten Lin Dan in Super Series and team events but not in major events. He must target those big moments."

Chong Wei will get his chance in the All England in
Birmingham on March 3-8 where Lin Dan will be playing in his first tournament of 2009.

But the really big one will be the World Championships in
Hyderabad on Aug 10-16 where Lin Dan will be eyeing to complete a hat-trick of titles while Chong Wei will be targeting his first appearance in the final.

Chong Wei has never won a major event and if he can reach and maintain the physical and mental strength needed, there is a good chance of toppling Lin Dan.

Not many BCers understand what's so good for players to play at their homegrounds

    .
Of course, with the same usual food, drinks, families/friends, climate/environment, etc... all around, home players should feel better.

It appears that not many BCers understand what/why it is so good for players to play at their own homegrounds.

We usually congratulate overseas players (with great admiration) when they have achieved with great success away from their home countries.
