Badminton: Irish Eyes May Smile Upon Indonesian Championship Shuttlers

Indonesian shuttlers competing in next month’s World Championships may get a chance to fine-tune their game at a training camp in Northern Ireland in the lead-up to the London event.

The Indonesian Badminton Association’s (PBSI) secretary general, Yacob Rusdianto, said on Wednesday that the association was offered free accommodation and training facilities in Belfast by Badminton Ireland, but the deal had yet to be finalized.

“All this year we have had trouble finding good places for shuttlers to train and acclimatize in Europe before playing in tournaments there,” Yacob said.

“Training in Belfast will be a great preparation for the World Championships. We will first send several coaches and shuttlers to survey the facilities before deciding anything.

We still don’t know what Badminton Ireland wants in return for their hospitality, but we warmly welcome their offer.”

London will host the championships from Aug. 8-14 at Wembley Arena, which will also be the venue for the badminton competition at next year’s Olympics.

Indonesian shuttlers are aiming to end a championship title drought dating back to 2007 in Kuala Lumpur.

They won two titles that year, with Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan lifting the men’s doubles trophy and Nova Widianto and Liliyana Natsir taking the mixed doubled.

With men’s and women’s singles in decline, double’s shuttlers will again be Indonesia’s best hope of breaking the title drought in London.

Three men’s doubles teams have qualified for the championships, including Markis and Hendra. But a repeat of 2007 is unlikely as they have struggled with knee problems and are yet to win a competition this year.

Also competing in the doubles are the pairs of Mohammad Ahsan and Bona Septano, and Alvent Yulianto Chandra and Hendra Aprida Gunawan.

“We see that, in term of quality, there’s not much difference among our men’s doubles,” said Christian Hadinata, the men’s double head coach.

Liliyana will compete in the championships for the first time with new partner Tontowi Ahmad. She and Tontowi have won three consecutive tournaments in India, Singapore and Malaysia.

Regeneratin for Double Sector Is Easier

    TEMPO Interaktif,
Jakarta - Regeneration process of Indonesian players in doubles sectors expected to take place more easily than the single sector. Which is good enough was the regeneration of men's doubles and mixed doubles sector. Coordinator for doubles sector of Pelatnas PBSI Christian Hadinata claimed that these two sectors as having a pretty solid fortress. "Not only in the national training camp, the one who is still or already outside pelatnas also have so many good ones ," he told journalists in Pelatnas Cipayung, Wednesday, July 20, 2011.

He pointed out that in mixed doubles sector already have three solid pairs Tontowi Ahmad / Liliyana Natsir, Fran Kurniawan / Pia Zebadiah Bernadet, and Muhammad Rijal / Debby Susanto. "They are now become our ace, and below them had been prepared some back up who is also very good" he said.

Mixed doubles coach Richard Mainaky stated that currently had many reliable one. "Not like before don't have that much" he said. Previously, in the mixed doubles sector only rely on one pair. For example in the era of Trikus / Minarti East can only continue to Nova Widianto / Liliyana Natsir.

Meanwhile, for now there are three pairs compete in a world stage. They are covered by young pairs or new pairs like Rizky Delynugraha / Puspita Richi Dili, Riky Widianto / Shendy Puspa Irawati, Irfan Fadhilah / Weni Anggraini. According to Richard, the three pairs are already giving positive development."Hopefully they will expand again," he said.

Meanwhile, the men's doubles sector, pelatnas PBSI is now rely on Bona Septano / Muhammad Ahsan to be able to increase their level. "Instead of we hoping Marksi Kido/Hendra Setiawan to keep on elite stage, we also want Bona/Ahsan can increase" said Christian. In addition, Christian also hope the young pairs ranked 22 Angga Pratama/Rian Agung Saputro.

Men's doubles coach Herry IP stated that the achievements that have been achieved in double sector is not something that is easily defended. "It took at least two years to form a solid game. Sometime there have a prospect pair but have some obstacles like injury or other nontechnical issues and eventually not good," he said.

This issues which make women doubles sector hardly to find suitable material. Assistant pf women's doubles coach Paulus Firman stated that now only Greysia Polii/Meiliana Jauhari can be our ace. Meanwhile, the women's doubles pairs are still too far away to be expected to directly compete at top level. "They indeed still young palyers, perhaps the most could reliable for is Anneke Feinya Agustine / Nitya Krishinda Maheswari," he continued.

    Yeah, now pelatnas got 5 WD.. Greysia/Meiliana, Nitya/Feinya, Gebby/Tiara, Suci/Della and Jenna/Komala. Feinya, Gebby,and Della is still 19, and the 2011 AJC winners Suci/Tiara is still U-19 for sure..:p

Singles shuttlers to train in Belfast for world c’ship
The Jakarta Post | Fri, 07/22/2011 8:00 AM

While the doubles squad concentrates on its final preparation for the London BWF World Championships at home, four singles shuttlers will head for a three-day training session at the Lisburn Racquets club in Belfast, Northern Ireland, which will also serve as the training site for the 2012 Olympic squad.

The four going abroad are men’s singles Simon Santoso and Hayom Rumbaka and women’s singles Adriyanti Firdasari and Lindaweni Fanetri. They will be accompanied by the national singles head coach Li Mao and assistant coach Wong Tat Meng. They depart for Belfast on Aug. 1 and will reunite with the rest of the team in London, two days prior to the World Badminton Championships, held Aug. 8-14.

National men’s singles coach Agus Dwi Santoso hoped that the training in Belfast would have the singles shuttlers better prepared. “Hopefully, the singles can better adjust with the climate there and improve their game strategy for the World Championships,” he said on Thursday.

Learning from past difficulties in finding a place for athletes to aclimatize before the Olympics, the Indonesia Badminton Association (PBSI) accepted an invitation from the Lisburn Racquets club for aclimatization training prior to next year’s London Olympics, free-of charge.

“The [four] shuttlers will be training there to also see whether the conditions there fit our needs: the building, the wind and the temperature,” PBSI secretary general Jacob Rusdianto told The Jakarta Post, explaining that the training is part of the PBSI’s search for the best place for an aclimatization training camp before the Olympics.

“If we are OK with the conditions in Belfast, we will propose the location to KONI [the Indonesian Sports Council]. We might be training there two to three weeks before the Olympics starts [on July 27-Aug. 12],” Jacob added.

The doubles squad preferred to stay home to concentrate on their final preparations for the World Championships.

We prefer to optimize training at home because it will be more difficult to find sparring partners for the doubles shuttlers if they train in Belfast. At home, our top national doubles are usually in training programs with their juniors,” the national doubles squad head coach Christian Hadinata told the Post. “Climate is not an issue for the shuttlers, as they have played in Europe many times,” Christian added.

Christian said earlier that it was important for the athletes to maintain their daily doses of training during weekdays and even, if possible, during weekends as well.

“Missing only a day or two of training can really decrease the shuttlers’ performance,” Christian said.

The last time an Indonesian singles shuttler won World Championship gold was Taufik Hidayat in 2005, while the latest doubles triumphs were back in 2007, bringing home two golds with men’s doubles Markis Kido/ Hendra Setiawan and mixed doubles Liliyana Natsir/Nova Widianto.

PBSI begins taking shuttlers’ nutrition seriously

Agnes Winarti, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Thu, 07/28/2011 8:00 AM

Indonesia has been long known as one of the world’s badminton powerhouses, but perhaps not because of its athletes’ diets.

After a long time of letting shuttlers at the Indonesia Badminton Association (PBSI) national training camp take care of their own nutrition, the PBSI has taken a step forward to improve the athletes’ diets by undertaking nutrition reform.

“I tried to pay attention to my diet, but I was clueless. Then I sought information from other people around me. I usually end up applying the wrong kind of nutrition,” women’s doubles shuttler Greysia Polii said.

Greysia, who ranks world number seven with Meiliana Jauhari, recalled once she tried a diet only of vegetables, but became weak and sick.

This nutrition-clueless era has come to an end, as within the past three months, the PBSI has begun to take nutrition seriously and is running the camp’s nutrition program for the first time with the main goal being to raise athletes’ and coaches’ awareness on the impact of nutrition ahead of the 2012 Olympics.

Accept the reality and move on: Li Mao

Agnes Winarti, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Fri, 07/29/2011 8:00 AM

Indonesia’s current low achievements in the world’s badminton leagues is normal, said the country’s head coach for badminton singles, Li Mao, as setbacks had also happened to powerhouses such as China.

The Chinese-born coach said that the country is currently at its lowest point of performance but this is normal in any badminton powerhouse. He said the nation just has to admit the hard truth while working more seriously on the players’ techniques if it aims to strive for resurgence in the badminton world.

Li Mao, who never gives interviews to the media, talked with reporters for the first time on Thursday, after being publicly scrutinized over the disappointing performance of the national singles squad since taking over the coaching bench in January. The 53-year-old coach spoke on the sidelines of the team’s departure ceremony for the BWF World Badminton Championships in London, from Aug. 8 to 14.

“Indonesia needs to accept the current reality: That it’s at its lowest point at the moment, [but from there] it can climb back to the top again,” Li Mao said through an interpreter.

Indonesian Shuttlers Watching What They Eat to Improve Endurance
    Ami Afriatni | July 31, 2011

Indonesia’s shuttlers have often faltered in major tournaments, but a lack of stamina may no longer be an issue if the team’s nutritionist has anything to say about it.

The Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) has brought on Dr. Laila Hamid to regulate the athletes’ diets during the last few months of intensive training ahead of the World Championships in London next week.

Laila, a sports nutritionist who previously worked with the PBSI, was an essential factor in Indonesia’s two titles at the 2007 World Championships in Kuala Lumpur, when Nova Widianto and Liliyana Natsir won mixed doubles and Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan took the top spot in men’s doubles.

After Djoko Santoso was re-elected as PBSI chairman in early 2008, however, Laila’s contract was not renewed. The association did not explain the decision.

Indonesian shuttlers began faltering in major tournaments, though, and the PBSI discovered that diet was one of the athletes’ main problems.

The organization asked her to rejoin, which she did in May after signing an 18-month contract. She instituted a rigorous diet program aimed at getting the shuttlers ready in time for the World Championships, which are set for Aug. 8-14 in London.

“As soon as we reached the deal, I started working with the athletes’ menu,” Laila said. “It was quite hard because I had to change everything on the list.”

She said a better nutritional intake would help athletes reach short-term goals, such as preventing them from suffering injury and maintaining concentration during tournaments.

“It has higher costs, of course, but the PBSI showed its commitment by allocating more of its budget for the menu,” Laila said.

One of her biggest challenges was to diversify the menu so the athletes would not get bored with the same foods.

“They come from different areas with different foods,” she said. “It is a big challenge for me to serve them their favorite foods and still provide the nutrition they need. I need to be more creative.”

On their days off, athletes are allowed to enjoy food outside the camp. Laila said she did not want to control their behavior and allowed them decide what to eat outside.

“I never tell them the do’s and don’ts because it only leads them to cheat,” she said. “But I always tell them what is best for them and I think they do it well. I spare my time for them to discuss food they want to order outside the camp. It can be by text messages or phone calls.”

One of the more attentive shuttlers is women’s doubles specialist Greysia Polii. The current world No. 7 has kept Laila busy while outside the camp.

“I keep texting her whenever I want to eat something outside the camp,” Gresia said. “She’s been really helpful. I know I should be aware of what I eat as a national athlete, because if we don’t care, who will?”

Greysia has lost two kilograms since Laila rejoined the team.

Another challenge was deciding what the shuttlers should eat during a match. Losing energy during a match can cause athletes to suffer from hypoglycemia, a state produced by lower-than-normal levels of blood sugar, Laila said. Hypoglycemia can cause impaired mental function, causing the athletes to lose focus more easily.

A recent invention known as energy gel, she said, is the answer.

Laila’s program has brought about improvements. Athletes have shown progress in a number of areas, including body fat index.

Greysia is one of the shuttlers enjoying the benefits of the program, saying she feels more powerful and healthier.

“I can feel my endurance, power and speed getting better,” the 23-year-old said. “It’s proof that physical training is useless without balanced nutrition.”

Rising mixed doubles star Tontowi Ahmad said the program was helpful.

“Usually I don’t know what I need to eat,” said Tontowi, who has won three titles this year with his partner, Liliyana Natsir. “Through this program, I know how to select healthy foods.”

Food alone does not make one a great athlete, Laila said. Hard work is still a very big part of the equation.

But as the saying goes, you are what you eat, and good nutrition can help athletes on the path to greatness.
