Squash queen Datuk Nicol Ann David was the first recipient of the award last year. Chong Wei was conferred the award in recognition of his achievements in badminton, particularly in the Beijing Olympics last year where he won the silver medal - his best ever. Introduced on June 26 1975, the award is meant for Malaysians who make outstanding contributions in raising the stature of the country in various fields. The Darjah Bakti award, which does not carry any title, is limited to 10 recipients at any one time. -- MORE SPORT-AWARD 2 KUALA LUMPUR Despite losing several major tournaments, Chong Wei, 27, from Bukit Mertajam, Penang has fought hard to stay at the top of world badminton. He began serious participation in the sport when he represented Bukit Mertajam District in the Penang School Sports Council championship at the age of 14 in 1996 and since then there was no looking back. Named the National Sportsman of the year in 2005 and 2008, Chong Wei was conferred the Ahli Mangku Negara (AMN) award in 2006 and the Darjah Setia Pangkuan Negeri (DSPN) after the Beijing Games, which carries the title "Datuk" by Penang. Besides the DB award given to Chong Wei today, former national soccer player Datuk Abdul Ghani Minhat received the Panglima Jasa Negara (PJN), which carries the title "Datuk". Abdul Ghani, 73, from Kampung Solok, Rantau, Negeri Sembilan was hailed as "raja bola" (king of football) for his feat in helping Selangor to clinch the Malaya (now Malaysia) Cup for Selangor in 1956, 1959, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1966, 1968 and 1969. -- MORE SPORTS-AWARD 3 (LAST) KUALA LUMPUR In the international arena, he had helped Malaya lift the Pestabola Merdeka trophy three times in a row from 1958 to 1960.
