another rule question: IN/OUT Next question then… considering we have been playing wrong..! What is in and out for doubles? This is what we play…. Doubles: everything in (baseline, sideline) Singles: baseline IN but sidelines OUT.
Singles For service and play inside side lines, outside base line ie long and thinner court Doubles For service, outside side lines, inside base line ie short and wider court For play, outside side lines, outside base line ie long and wider court
can i please just check that the service in doubles is indeed wide? according to wikipedia image- it does not appear as though it is... (and i normally trust wiki!) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Badminton thanks
The service court for doubles extends from the centre line to the doubles sideline. And from the short service line (1.98m from the net) to the doubles long service line (5.9m from the net & 72cm from the back boundary line). http://www.internationalbadminton.org/PDF - Regulations/67 LAWS OF BADMINTON.pdf

While wiki sources, in general, are often a great place to start any informal research, I would never put complete faith in them. It is always best to check other sources as well to verify information & to get alternate perspectives. Wiki sources sometimes contains errors and often reflect a bias (even tho' it has not always flagged as such). Wiki sources are not considered legit, citeable references for writing papers in college (& even high school). With that said, it looks like the wiki source that you referenced for badminton looks to be quite excellent (however, I've only skimmed it thusfar). Is the image below the one you mean? I noticed that the short service line is shown but not mentioned at all in this image. It also does not explicitly state the service sideline for doubles. However, since both the short service line and the long service line for doubles traverse the doubles alleys, it implies that the service area for doubles is "short and wide". For singles serves, the singles side line would naturally take precedence. Also, since it explicitly states the the back boundary line is also the long service line for singles, the serving area for singles would be "long & narrow".
