I've started taking some lessons again, and I've been told that I'm not leading with my elbow enough in my forehand motion, for clear and smash. I was wondering, why is this so important to do and why is this stressed so much in Chinese training? Also, I've noticed a lot of players who are national and pro, who do not always lead with their elbow on over head-forehand shots. Thanks, Justin
Leading with elbow in both back and fore hands help with whipping action and more importantly forearm supination and pronation. This is where you get extra power. Another way to get even more power is to activate core muscles into the strike. But let's just concentrate on one thing g at a time.
Lee Jae Bok doesn't technically lead with his elbow in the sense that his elbow never leads the way(is in front from start) But he still leads with the elbow in the fact that he transfers power elbow first and for a split second is in front. I believe this is why the OP is confused. check it out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOuW82emc0U&list=PLD076186372B80277&index=8 In answer to question it is important to "lead" with elbow for efficient power and greater maximum power.
lol. LD has a way more pronounced elbow lead leaving the racket and wrist far behind the elbow, for a clear reference of what is happening http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIYbsGYT4m4
All professional baseball pitchers pitch with their elbow leading. You should do likewise... pitching or badminton (overhead). If you don't, it is a short-cut to injuries.
