Smash is easy? Yes, it's easy. But hard to 'master'.
Most beginners depend on their *flat* 'smashes', yes, they're smashes, but they're flat. The hard part is to get it faster, precise, and at an angle. Now that's not as easy as you've described it.

Oh and I agree with you, that the footowkr must be good in order to get to the correct position faster for an overhead/around-the-head clear.
It just takes practise. But still, that's not as hard as 'mastering' the smash :p.

Smashing was always my problem. I have decent shots overall besides smash. My little brother says its, medium fast. Which is pretty non threatening. I play with a plastic shuttle. Are they that much slower than feathers?

It depends. Some of them are as slow as turtles, some are as fast as hax.
If you want to make your smashes 'threatening', here's two options for you..
    1)shout
    2)jump smash.
    haha..

Lol! Nice one Jhirata. I don't want to do jump smashes just yet. After I get great regular smashes first.

    Hmm.. great regular smashes..
Fast, precise, and steep. You might want to practise drops and half-smashes in that case :).
Half-smashes are basicly like smashes/fast drops, but only using your wrist. You'll get great angle with that. It will also help you strengthen your wrist, which will also help you smash faster.

Anyway for now, the shouting strategy might work.. :):p:D

Non of the listed standard shots are difficult with the right footwork and technique. So I guess I will go with trick shots where you have to add feel/controle to the equation :)

Yeah I agree, even relative beginners can smash, but mastering it can take a lot of work... Especially when you bring jumping into the equation! I've just started trying to learn that (just for fun really...), and timing the jump right is my big problem.

    jumping smash isn't hard...
for the timing to me right!!
1st your whole body have to be on your right side means turning your whole body on the right.. if your a right hander that is...
2nd you have jump behind the shuttle!!!
3rdly when you smash your whole body turn in front!!!
and land on your toe to get ready for the next shuttle..

Jump smashing is more in the timing. You need to be able to time the your jump and swing at a really good point where everything flows at once.

    Backhand

My backhands are horrendous. Backhand clear is decent, but I cant BH smash or drop for my life.

I think i have the arm power to land a good smash, but tech is not there yet.

backhand smash is easy too lol!!
get behind the shuttle and hit only
    same like forehand...
just have to move faster abit..
your racket must always be behind the shuttle...
then there is no problem in that now

for the perfect exhibition of a backhand clear - see Kido's CROSS COURT clear at 4:15 - note the stance, positioning, angle at point of contact, everything! shot is so good it's a winner which leaves the opposition glued to their feet! pure perfection!!

IMO, the best way to get the timing right is to do it for fun :p
I can do lots of things I want to do, if it's just for fun..
But once there's pressure on me.. many things go wrong.
