Greetings,

Received this news from Badminton Australia.

From July 22nd to 27th July, 2008, Ballarat Badminton Association will be hosting the biggest ever International Badminton Event to be held in Australia, outside the Olympics and Commonwealth Games.

The 2008 KLRC Australian International and the Australian Junior International have attracted over 170 players from Malaysia, Korea, Indonesia, Denmark, Japan, Philippines, England, Samoa, Chinese-Taipei, New Zealand, Scotland, Austria, Egypt, Mexico, India, Singapore as well as our very own Australian Olympic Team and Australian National Squad Members.

A great highlight of the event will be the return of Malaysia’s World Number 1 Mens Doubles pair of Cheah Soon Kit and Ong Beng Teong, who led Malaysia to a win in the Thomas Cup. Cheah Soon Kit also has an Olympic Silver Medal in his very impressive trophy cabinet!

The World’s number 16 Mixed Doubles pair from Chinese Taipei will also be competing, as well as Mens Singles world number 18, Sairul Ayob and number 23 Lee Tsuen Seng from Malaysia.

Venue: Ken Kay Badminton Centre, Ballarat, Victoria, Australia
Directions to the venue: Please find it in the attachment below

I went to uni in Ballarat. It has a nice hghway all the way there from Melbourne. When I grew up it took much longer than 1 hour but now no problems. It's arguably the coldest city in Victoria. I had my 21st birthday there and it snowed. I can't believe I studied badminton as part of my teaching degree back in 1995 and failed the subject. I guess I just loved playing it, not studying it, lol.

It'd be a great event and it's good that it's free as it should attract quite a few onlookers.

Ballarat is about one hour's drive from Melbourne

.
Hi ctjcad,

aZn_Popcorn and Timbuctoo are correct. Ballarat is about one hour's drive from Melbourne.

Unfortunately, because of my Badminton commitments in Melbourne, I won't be available to go to Ballarat to watch this event. It would be nice to watch Cheah Soon Kit and Ong Beng Teong playing in the Mens Doubles again. The last time I caught up with Cheah Soon Kit was when he came as the coach for the Malaysian team at the Commonwealth Games held in Melbourne in 2006.

However, if I receive any news about what's happening in this tournament, I shall post them here in this thread. :):):)

Cheers... chris-ccc

2008 Australian International with no Chinese players

.
Perhaps CHN thinks that our Australian BWF Level 4 Tournament is too easy for them. :D:D:D

The last time I saw Cheah Soon Kit (in Singapore Open), he has gone a little prosperous ... It'll be interesting.

All the MAS players there are from KLRC (who happens to be the sponsor also) so I guess Cheah wants to join in the fun instead of just coaching.
