I was doing once a week but having health insurance covers some of the cost of my physio sessions. Twice a week should be fine as long as you're quite dedicated to doing the strengthening work.
Hey guys, you all know what shot/maneuver you did that cost your ACL to tear right? When you all came back to play again after the surgery, did you dare to do that same maneuver again? Any phobia there? I sort of have that phobia if I am well enough to play...... Is it worth the risk?
Yep, I went for a real ambitious lunging/diving backhand retrieve when I heard my knee go pop. I had the phobia for a good month or two but as I regained confidence in my knee and movements, the fear eventually went to the point it doesn't bother me. However I'm more pro-active when it comes to knee pain and swelling. I'm more than happy to miss a session or two in the interests of extending my playing career lol
you'll get there as well. Just need to have a bit of patience and determination. Hope you have a speedy recovery.
I tore my ACL executing the same shot, however it seems that I didn't hop over a bit and I just leaned over too much so my body turned but foot stayed put. After surgery (hamstring graft), I started playing lightly around 6 months, on and off. Now, 1 year and 4 months later, I am still a bit hesitant on leaning over that much to get overhead shots, however I have been trying to adapt to hopping a bit so my leg/foot/knee can properly support my body. I don't think I'm as active as I was before I tore my ACL though, still gotta work out and gain more knee strength =P
Very Bad news from my side. While playing badminton couple of days back, I had re injured the same knee and this time tear in medial meniscus. Surgery scheduled for Sunday. Very depressed.
Since sharing is caring, I'd like to share my thoughts: I tore / ruptured my ACL as well. Not only ACL. Both mensicus as well! :crying: With an overhead jumpsmash! In addition, it wasn't just a jump straight up from the bottom. No, I was jumping from the forehand side to the backhand side to do my probably stupidest overhead jumpsmash! It happened during a men's doubles semi-final of a regional tournament. I had too much adrenaline in my blood, eventhough I shouted on the point before. The adrenaline was still very present in my blood. That's a reason why I did such a stupid move. This accident is probably a point to remember: You're getting older. Fast and furious shouldn't be your style anymore. However, after the immediate visit at the hospital, I had to wait 1 week for an appointment with the knee specialist. After that, I had to wait 2 days only, since I've choosen the new so called DIS-method (DIS in german: dynamische intraligamentäre Stabilisierung) This surgery method requires to be happened within 3 weeks after the ACL rupture, that's why they were able to made an express appointment. I just wanna note, that this DIS-method is pretty new. As far as I know they invented it 3 years ago. My english isn't that great to explain the details for this surgery method. But the good thing is: I still have my original ACL. Of course it is sutured, but I didn't need any fibers(?) from another body parts or any plastic things. More informations? Go to ligamys.com - Most informations are there. But I think the page is still under construction. There are three germany surgery centers stated only. There are way more centers which use this method...! The funny thing is that the inventor is from Switzerland. Shame about this...! The new method allows a fast healing process they've told me. I should be able to play badminton 4 months after the surgery. The healing process of my knee seems to be fine with physiotherapy. The progress in the first 3 weeks is really really big. Now, almost 4 weeks after the surgery, I'm able to walk without any support for a week now. Now it's time to regain the full flexion and extension with physiotherapy. And of course all the muscles I've lost need to be regained as well Honestly I could do more exercises at home But I'm confident to play badminton very soon (in 3 or 4 months). Eventhough I ruptured my ACL and damaged both meniscus only 1 month ago! All guys out here who also ruptured their ACL: Think positive! Keep going to physiotherapy and do your exercises!
Tq for the new info Accordaz. Keep yr progress & recovery updated here. I am 22 weeks post ACL & meniscus surgery using the double tunnel method & had started playing badm last week but at a slower pace..... By 28 weeks I should be back playing at higher intensity. Good luck & all the best.
Well, for me I waited for 3 months before they confirmed with MRI, thanks to the 'quality' NHS GPs in the UK..... It is good to know that there is alternative way to fix the knee. But anyhow, mine is fixed and I can play badminton as usual.
I tore mine, just by a simple jump in front of the net, not very high (left leg). Fell on the ground, my colleague send me to the hospital A&E. Got an appointment 1 week after that at a sport clinic cum Orth dept to check my bone condition at the same hospital. Sports clinic put me on treatment and physio exercise. MRI scan was done 2 weeks later, the following week, went back for follow up at sport clinic and was confirmed with torn ACL. Didn't go for re-construction, I opt not to and was placed physio-treatment an exercise for next several weeks. During this period, muscle had wasted away some 7cm compared to the right side just after week but still continue to play at a slower pace but stopped totally after the MRI result came out. In between my physio sessions, I did exercise besides those as requested my physio trainer. After 10 weeks from the start of my injury, I was back to my game. Of course, not at full pace as I had to regain my confident. Trainer dis-charge me from clinic after conducting some assessment. I even did a stretching assessment test in badminton and had been cleared. Some stuff, I thought I would have problem, but I did it without problem. That was 3 years back, happened on the last day of Apr. I would say I have no fear, I am lying. I started learning how to use my backhand instead of my overhead smash and drive, etc.... No choice as I don't want to risk further injury to my left leg. I am using a Futuro support with stabiliser. So far so good. Like some one mentioned, I would sometimes give certain type of shots a miss if I think it is too much for me. This,.... so that I can at least enjoy playing for a more prolong period rather than be a one time hero
Hi Accordaz, how is your knee doing now using the DIS method? How much is the cost for this new method?
Hi Thanks for asking My healing process is doing well! I was able to walk very very easily without hinking. Walking upstairs or downstairs was no problem at all. I was almost that fast as the day before the injury. Why "I was able"? Because the day before yesterday and yesterday I have suffered something like a little throwback. The knee was hurting when I was walking. I was hinking as well! That was kinda unbelievable because I was walking that easily for the last 2 weeks :crying: Today I went to the physio again and my therapist told me that it is common that there are throwbacks in the healing process. No need to stop or make a pause, she told me. And today my knee really doesn't hurt that much like yesterday. I also was able to do the exercises. *phew* Too much fear for nothing The healing process plan for a week looks like this: - 1 appointment with the physio therapist (for the first 7 weeks 2 app. / week) - 1 aqua running session at 45 min - Honestly I don't like it at all - 1 fitness session at gym with all the recommended exercises - honestly I could and should do more than 1 session per week To go more into the details how far my knee can be stressed now: I can fully stand on the leg where the knee was injured. I can go upstairs with heavy weight. I could run very slowly, but didn't try it yet. My therapist didn't recommend that. That's why I'm doing aqua running now, it's less wearing for the ACL. On the other side the doctor which repaired my knee has told me I could start running 1km. I prefer the defensive mindset in my healing process. Rupturing the ACL again is probably the least I want. What about jumping? I didn't try it out. I basically don't do things which my therapist hasn't allowed yet. Your question about the costs: I absolutely don't know how much it is. People living and working in Switzerland are usually insured against any injuries. Therefore the insurance of my employer will pay all of it. The physiotherapy as well. I really can say that I'm lucky to have such a good treatment which can't be said in every country. Maybe it helps when I tell you how long I had to stay in the hospital? The operation duration was pretty exactly 45 minutes. I had a subfield narcosis before. After the operation I stayed 2 nights (only). After the first (horrible) weekend (with a lot of pain) I immediately started my physiotherapy, since it was highly recommended. And I'm thankful for this. The earlier you start with the physiotherapy after the operation the better and faster your knee may heal. Please notice that this statement only counts for the new DIS method (with ligamys). Also remember: This DIS method only can be used if the injury is not older than 3 weeks. Early treatment right after injury is recommended. If the disruption of ACL is only a few days older than 3 weeks, you may ask the doctor anyways. It could be that they will decide the method right in the operation room, when they can rate the status of your ruptured ACL.
Did the doctor say when you can start playing badm again? The usual time frame is about 9 months. Is the DIS method going to be faster? When did you exactly do the surgery?
As I already stated in my first posting, I will probably be able to play badminton 4 or 5 months after the surgery. Yes, with this DIS method the healing proccess should be faster. The big difference is already visible in the beginning of healing process, since it was recommended to do physiotherpy from day 1 right after the surgery. And the other big difference is that I still have my original ACL. I don't have any plastic thing or any fibers from another body part. Maybe someone else here who has been operated with the traditional surgery for ruptured ACL can tell about his healing process in detail and compared with mine here? May I ask you why you ask that specific? Did you also ruptured your ACL? by the way: I'm still not able to fully stretch / extend my leg while standing. And I'm also not able to flex it completely yet. I hope these things are getting better soon.
Yes I have a total tear of ACL in Aug last year. Did my ACL reconstruction on 30 Dec. I did a double bundle double tunnel recon using my hamstring. Also started physiotherpy on Day 2 after surgery. So, you can compare yr recovery with mine coz I did the conventional way. I am also curious to know the new method..... My progress has been good. Physio twice a week. I started playing slowly at 4 months post surgery. Now I am playing much faster & better but still a bit cautios. I am 6.5 months post surgery now......
The disaster has just happened to me last week, attempted an overhead smash while jumping sideways and I landed on my left leg, seemed like my left knee was locked. I can feel like bones were slipped off a bit and went back popped in. Instantly, I felt a massive pain. I went to hospital but they only did Xray which didn't show any bone fractures, then I went to the orthopedist to check further. He was pretty sure that the ACL is torn and probably the meniscus as well but he needs to confirm after I proceed with MRI for further details. Now, I'm still waiting for the MRI schedule on Friday with my swelling knee. Hopefully, I could get away from surgery as I know my housemate had the similar situation and managed to recover through physiotherapy and rehabilitation exercises. Took him almost 2 years to get fully recovered and resume his Taekwondo routines.
