    In fact, I posted that line after watching the opening of the 1979 epic Caligula
    (to some, it's a classic... :p to others, it's hardcore stuff :rolleyes:)

    As I'd just finished reading the latest posts on LYB, the quote struck me as quite an apt one to describe his predicament (well, one of his own making) :D

    True sportsmanship will not be displayed when players participate in 'fixed' matches

    Hi bananakid,

    I agree with you when you mentioned "Everyone else gives him(LYB) the opportunity(to fix matches)". This is because nobody wants to interfere with another person's reason/decision.

    You will have followed the arguments in this thread... everyone is saying that match fixing is not illegal.

    But when we say that an opportunity is 'not illegal', we are not saying that that opportunity is the only way to do it. We have to think of what is right or wrong, for players and fans.

    Actually, LYB has upset players and fans inside China, as well.

    Some of the people that LYB has upset are;
    1. Some better players who are denied the opportunity to represent/win for China.
    2. Some fans wishing to watch spirited matches, regardless of which Chinese province the players come from.

    Why do you think when many of us@Badminton Central have said that when the top 2 Chinese players are playing each other, it is not as interesting as the top 2 players of another nation (say, Denmark, Malaysia, Indonesia, Korea, Japan, etc...) are playing each other?

    Answer: We could see that the true sportsmanship and fighting spirit of the Chinese players are not displayed when a decision has already been made... that is, to play the match as a 'fixed match'.

    Cheers... chris@ccc

    Either you have lots of time on hand to romance with poems or just that you are one old romantic bugger...:D:p
    Checking on the QR in CHN07 flooded with names of CHN players never heard of before except for a few, that give us an insight on the next wave of players coming up compared to the rest of the world...;)

    Are you saying CHN coaches before LYB did not have the opportunities to do the same? That there were not enough good CHN MS (like 3 or 4) to dominate? Can anyone share those times when it's CHN vs CHN. What were the matches like?

    The biggest surprise is Macao names;so many it's like they are there to give their opponents an easy ride.Did MCO07 have that many MCO players?

    unfortunately, this is not always the right thing to do. look where china is now. yes, it appears that china is getting more and more advanced, but the pollution, corruption, and crime has also gone through the roof. for example, if there's a mouse in a museum, does that mean the cat can run around, knock everything down, and destroy the whole museum just to catch that mouse? isn't the overall effect more destructive than if a mouse was caught in a less "violent" sense.

    but this isn't just a Chinese belief, that people can be sacrificed so the country benefits. for all those who think of westerners as being "civilized", there's a saying in the western world armies. ""The mission before the man". western officers are discouraged from making friends with their own troops. they are to see the soldiers as a disposable tool to getting the job done.

    so i don't think it's just a chinese problem. the question really comes down to when it's worth it? in a time of war, then lives are less important than a country's survival. in the olympic finals...maybe...maybe not. it's not really up to us to judge what is more important, and what Li Yongbo did was right or wrong in the 2000 Olympics.

    Who are the champions outside China ?

    Now that LYB has decided for his players not to participate in the Super Series Finals, we might get to see all matches in the SS Finals played with greater fighting spirit, to determine who are the champions outside China. :):):)

    Funny that without China, we should be able to see matches with more fighting spirit...

    Past histories...
    - Korean players were fined for not trying when playing their country man;
    - Christian Hadinata not challenging Rudy Hartono in singles;
    - Liem Swie King losing to Rudy Hartono in World Championships finals;
    - Liem Swie King losing to Icuk Sugiarto in World Championships finals;

    etc., etc.,

    Just China? Maybe. Li Yongbo was honest (or stupid depending how each person sees this incident) to admit what he did.

    LYB is most determined to get 5 GOLD medals for China in Badminton

    Yeah, and seriously, many of us, including LYB, would want to see who are the champions outside China who could be Beijing Olympics medals contenders.

    LYB has let known that he is most determined to get 5 GOLD medals for China in Badminton. So he should be watching the SS Finals with case study and analysis.
